Using "gay" meaning stupid or just as an insult was around when i was still in High school, and I graduated 5 years ago. Whether it's gotten worse I dunno, but its been used like that for more than just 2 or 3 years.
Yeah that was a bad estimate on my part but it has grown from small scale to everyone.

no, people today are less homophobic than before. I cam out of the closet in 1995. back then there were barely support for young like me, and the school was hesitating to protect me when people in my school discover it, and that i was the target of jokes, i almost got beaten a couple of time, etc. They offered me changing school over do something about it. Now those kind of situation would not occur anymore.

For the use of the word gay, actually i higly doubt that people who use the term think about homosexuality when they use it. beside to my knowledge, it's an english only phenomena...

Bah! Frankly im tired of seeing all this Homo vs Opposite hickey, Americans have serious issues, always making d non-issue, The Issue.
The boy who commitd suicide was a result of bullying, which should be addressd not cos of a word which can take on several meanings.

but doesn't gay also mean happy?

And it seems that people are less homophobic today, except the government.

Seriously, most of those idiots think that by allowing gay marraige they allow the Devil to take over the Earth.
Seriously, whats so bad about gay marraige?

Yep, there is a homophobia outbreak going on. Anything remotely happy is considered gay. The sad thing is, there's no way of turning back.
by definition this is true, it is a tragedy.

On topic, I think there is a problem with the misuse of the words gay and fag. However, I rarely see actual gay bashing in my community(and I live in the mid-west, WHERE ARE YOUR STEREOTYPES NOW!?)

I'm a sixteen year old and I do say something is "gay" or someone is being "gay", but I wouldn't consider my self homphobic. When I'm refering to someone who is homosexual I usually say homosexual, or lesbian if they are female. I use "gay" along with the slang it has become part of. People may be offended but at my work there are plenty of lesbians and I have heard them say gay like that too.

Retard is similar in this way, I use "retard/retarded" in that kind of context but when I'm refering to someone who has a mental handicap I am more specific and will say mentally retarded/challenged or use a specific disability when referencing someone or having an intelligent conversation.
Just for the sake of it: Homosexual applies to same-sex attractions, regardless of the sex of the person. Thus, lesbianism is also under homosexuality and does not need to be mentioned separately.

Just something that annoys me, for reasons unknown.

I think epidemic is not the correct word. I wouldn't say it is a problem either. I feel that there a lot more acceptance of all sexualities in todays word within the past century.
Ancient Greece was pretty down with it. Though I can't find it now (god I hope noone looks at my google logs for the past three minutes) there is even a medallion or engraving of a man who has a sheep lying down in front of him. And he is calming it with his touch. I'll leave that to your mind.

There are two things I think of whenever this sort of question and/or related discussions come up. First is that man is meant to fit inside woman (biological fact people!). Second is that there seems to be a lot of discrimination and lack of acceptance going on for the regular joe these days. Women, "Foreigners", "black" individuals and "gays" are promoted in the workplace above and beyond those who have better qualifications. Handouts are given to everyone except middle-class-caucasians and they are the ones who have to watch what they say.

Personally, I've been homophobic since the day I was born, that's what you get for being raised by a bunch of soldiers and christians I guess. I don't think there is an Epidemic going on, it's just like use of the word "fuck". The language has evolved to hold different words.

"Are we green?" replacing "Are we cool?" in The Fifth Element - Are we cool replaced "Is everything ok?" and so on.

If you're offended by being called gay or fag, you are severely insecure in your sexuality no matter what you are. Plus, most of these words have many meanings now. Fag can equal douche. Gay can equal basically anything at all (wonder why? I'll just blame America for it :p).

Gay marriage was legalized in Canada. It was on the news for about three days. It was promptly forgotten and everyone stopped giving a shit. What is stopping the USA? The fundamental difference between the two countries: Canada is secular, the USA is not. In Canada, the law was gonna be passed based on rights no matter who complained. USA, everyone's all 'One Nation Under God'-ish.

As for whether it is a right? Oh come off it, you and your opinions are not the determining factor of the world. Get over yourself and your preconcieved ideas about what is right and wrong. A non-secular country cannot properly follow human rights because it will always favour one group over another. An interesting argument is the use of the term marriage due to its sacredness and historical use. Nowadays? Marriage is as sacred as a sack of shit. Still a fun argument though.

It's not getting worse, and definately improving slowly but surely..

Much like racism, I predict that eventually pretty much 99% of people will be completely accepting of homosexuals sometime this century... Homophobes will get over their rediculous insecurities and irrational fear of gay people as it becomes a normal thing and not so 'new' (I know it's not new, but its only in the past couple of decades in most modern societies that its actually become 'okay' to be gay.) And similarly, most of the haters will move on to hate on some other minority. Religious extremists will remain the same as they are now, but shut up about it because voicing it will be likely to get them enemies. Gay couples will be able to get married or an equal kind of partnership in virtually all western societies and most other places too.

Perhaps it's less of an honest prediction and more about what I sincerely HOPE happens. But honestly it looks like it's going to go that way from my view point. It's just scary for some people because they don't understand the details yet, and 'discusting' because manly straight men have to say that in order to keep their cred and not get punched. This will all change in time as homosexuals become more accepted. It just takes time for these things to happen, I again give racism as an example... Let's just be patient.

And yeah, when people call things or other people 'gay' its usually used without them really thinking about it much. Sad, but its not too big of a deal. It's just a stupid fad that will die out, and theres no hatred behind it really.

I don't mind homophobes that just avoid homosexuals and dislike them in private, but the ones who go all out with the need to kill homosexuals just because they don't like them is just.... well it's self explanatory really.

With some people it's just peer-pressure, and when you tell them, they deny it although in the back of their heads they know it's true. MOST homophobes are so because of peer pressure.

If you don't like gay people, that's you, so just leave them alone and go about your business. If they're not bothering you, don't preach about it.

That also goes for anyone who's gay. Don't preach about your sexuality or it will tick people off.

Just go about your business.

Dear god... more PC... I hang out with a few gay guys, they DONT CARE how you use the word gay. If i were to say, you are soooo homosexual instead of gay, would that make it better? In the end none of this will matter and we will all die a lonely, drawn out pathetic death.

We have more tolerance now then ever, so no, there is no epidemic. Also, not everyone that has a problem with gays are homophobic, and don't bother getting in an argument with me over that, as irrational as it sounds, because I've had it a million times and can't stomach it again. Feel free to look it up, though.

I'd say there is a problem with homophobes, not necessarily the people who dislike their lifestyle but respect their right to live their life how they want to, but the people who constantly use it as an insult. Constantly, when playing against Americans, you get called "******", "gay" etc and it isn't said in a joking manner. And if you ask me, well, those people who keep going on about gays aren't natural or something are hiding a secret themselves "I think the lady[man] doth protest too much".

I think some people take words much too seriously. If you get offended that easily, you don't belong in society.

Personally in high school anything or anyone is "gay" or "a jew"
I think it is a problem because most of the world is looking to move forward minus the President of Iran.
A-HA! So you were just as I expected, a self-righteous High Schooler.

Guess what? Homophobia is less prevalent now that it has been since Roman times. Gays used to be murdered by the Chruch, for god's sake.

(sorry for the three separate posts, need to get my post count up somehow, eh? lol)
Romans? You mean how some Greeks and Romans had male partners? Or how in the armies they bundled soldiers into a pair, to make them live with each other, eat, and of course, sometimes it grew into a homosexual relationship. But it was normal.

It wasn't considered a bad thing pre-476 (fall of the Empire).

I use the words "fag" and "gay" a lot, but I'm far from homophobic. Its just an adjective in the context I use it with no disrespect to any homosexuals.

Think I must have been lucky in the places I've lived and traveled as I've seen majorly sharp drops for the last 20 years ...but then again I think " where" I've been may have played a major part in that.

I have also seen this on a small scale with antisemitism.
Don't you mean semiphobia? How come homosexuals are the only minority that gets to claim that their detractors are motivated only by fear? Cheap iyam.

Really, I can't find out exactly what it is you people expect a homophobe to do.

If a person for pro-gay movement speaks up, he is openly encouraged and/or ignored, but if a homophobe speaks up, he's labeled an intolerant bigot and told to shut up. The only homophobes which aren't criticized are the ones who keep silent, and do you really think that's going to fly for so long?

As for the issue of the homosexual insults, I neither support nor condone them. They're impolite, but they're also nothing but simple slander, and if a person get riled up over it NOW after its been used for decades without protest, then they can just shut up and keep silent about the topic of homosexuality altogether- just like anti-homos are expected to.
