Not to be a pretentious twat, but come on... there is some music a lot of you tier one folks are ignoring/not recognizing/not thinking of. Yes, I'm sure some of you are overly aware of Tutsi influenced tribal/electro-punk, but I sincerely doubt most of you do. Just disagreeing to disagree, sorry if I rustled your music feathers.
Yes but this tier system is poorly done, because of how it's set up nearly everyone falls into tier one, since you just require to listen to 2 or more of the genres he listed, which most people do, in fact just listening to the radio automatically makes you a tier 1, it's just a poorly done system : P

I don't know, I just listen to sounds I like. Don't see why I have to categorize my fun like some boring accountant.

Tier 1 for me. I mostly listen to various forms of rock, new age, soundtracks, international, and some comedy sketches here and there. All depends on the mood I'm in.

I don't really fit the tier list.
Though if I had to describe my tastes..."rock-classical-jazz-techno-ethnic/folk-snob".
Honestly, I don't follow specific musicians all that much, so much as I enjoy individual pieces of music.

I don't listen to genres, I listen to music. My iPod flows from rock to folk to R&B to rap to electronic to heavy metal and zigzags between everything in between. There's a ton of good stuff out there, why limit yourself to a few catagories?

I'm definitely Tier 1. On my phone, I havel Metal (Rammstein), Pop/Punk (Die Ärzte, Die Fantastischen Vier), Electonic music (Skrilex, Headhunterz, Da Tweakerz) and Rap (Die Fantastichen Vier, Reggie Watts). That's all not to mention the pony-related music which usually fits under one or more of these catagories.
As you can probably see, a lot of my music is in German.

I count 8 genres on that list that I listen to, so I guess I'm around tier -1.
I would have a hard time definitively excluding any of them conclusively, so I'd say more like negative six. I have a particular soft spot for wildly inappropriate cross-genre covers or mashups of songs that end up mixing multiple genres simultaneously, or genres/styles themselves that are a blend of multiple influences (e.g. symphonic or folk metal). I blame the wide variety of stuff I was exposed to as a kid, like my classical piano teacher from a Russian conservatory who also had me learn blues and show tunes too for some reason, being in a Baroque quartet, listening to my parents' old LPs, staying up to listen to all the weird stuff the college radio station played in the middle of the night, etc.

Well, I listen to country, new pop, old pop (NSYNC etc), Soft Rock (Daughtry), to Hard German Rock (Rammstein), to Rap/Hip Hop (Eminem). I also have a ton of Japanese J-Pop, mostly Anime OSTs. Alternative. I listen to everything but religious, holiday (except around christmas time, though a good rendition of Auld Lang Syne and Amazing Grace (Celtic Woman best rendition). Soundtracks for movies... I listen to just about everything.

Tier 1 isn't even that broad. Every genre has a few good songs, even in a genre I dislike I can still find some songs I like. So I listen to almost every genre with the exceptions of ones I never heard.

I'd go with tier 3, but I do enjoy listening to lots of things outside of metal, like King Crimson and different soundtracks (i.e. Half Life/Black Mesa, TES, Dungeon Siege, LOTR etc.).

Tier system doesn't make much sense.

I can find songs in pretty much any genre that I like, but I prefer specific genres, because I tend to like more songs in those genres.

But just having listened to a bunch of different genres wouldn't be all that broad in any case. You could get that by listening to the Top 40 all your life, and I doubt many would call that anything more than a shallow appreciation of music.

Most definitely a tier 1. There are only a few genres I don't tend to listen to much, and I'm pretty sure there will be a few songs in every genre that I will like.
I have no idea what 'avant guarde' actually consists of so I'll probably have to go find out now.

I'm not German, but I still listen to polka. To polka. You don't get broader than that.

Well I listen to every genre Allmusic listed apart from:

Children's
Country
Holiday
Religious
Spoken Word

With at least 10 albums or more in every other catagory bar R&B. I have music ranging from Gustav Mahler to Swans and from Public Enemy to Brian Eno to Napalm Death, and although I don't really listen to country I enjoy Johnny Cash like most people.

Technically, the tiers are flawed in the sense that if 80% of the people vote for only one tier then there is not alot of diversity. Anyways, I like to listen to Blues, Classical, Country, Comedy, Electronic, Jazz, Rap, Reggae, and RnB.
Also to anyone out there who listens to Rap, what is on with me listening to Australian Rap? I'm not Australian, nor do I live there or have any connections. Is there some reason why I like listening to that local scene?

These results are unsurprising. But I think my tastes are pretty broad.

Rock will always be my favorite, I think, but I listen to rap, jazz, hip hop, metal, classical, electronic, ambient, blues, folk, and most of their sub-genres. And frankly, I think metal & rock should be separate. And definitely, as you mentioned, pop & rock should be separate. Why would those be lumped together? WTF?

The only real genres I don't listen to are R&B, soul & religious.

And yeah, I do listen to Steely Dan. They're great.

While I mostly listen to metal and it's many variations, I would have to call myself a Tier 1. I listen to lots of classical music, and a lot of spoken word/comedy as well.

I guess I'm a Tier 1, though I couldn't take any one or two of those genres and listen to the whole thing.

-Blues Tier 2. Haven't encountered much under this genre that I don't like... but some of the modernized stuff and some of the old esoteric stuff gets under my skin.

-Classical Tier 3. I prefer the dramatic, epic and warlike to the light and happy... but some of the latter I still enjoy.

-Country Tier 5. Very little I like here, but it does exist, usually in the form of bluegrass.

"Comedy/spoken"... I'm sorry, I had to bring this up... that's not music, it's more akin to reading. I love a lot of it, but it's not even close to the same thing.

-Electronic Tier 3. Some genres in this category I just can't stand (house comes to mind), but some I love (industrial comes to mind)

-Folk Tier 5. Some very few artists in this category can pluck my nostalgia strings, that is all.

"Holiday"? Is that traditional religious songs only, or... I think I'm going to call invalid genre again.
"International"? Dafuq is that? If I listen to any band from any country that isn't my own, does that count? What if it's a country I've lived in before, but moved away from? I call invalid genre.

-Jazz Tier 3. Any piece that could be confused with "easy listening" belongs in a farmer's burn pile.

"Latin"... do monks chanting count? I kind of enjoy that, though I tend to lump it in with classical. Or is this something to do with "Latino"... in which case, does Ill Nino count? What about Soulfly? Because I tend to lump them in with metal.

-Pop/Rock... I love how you've got incredibly specific genres like Folk up there, and then this. Hard to put a Tier to something that covers such a huge range and crosses over with so many of the other genres listed. As a rule I'm firmly under the rock banner on this one, though if you count popular music from the 60s and 70s, I could be considered a fan of pop as well.

-R&B... Tier 3? 70s yes, modern no?

-Rap Tier 4. I'm willing to give pretty much any of it a try, I like some of the more thoughtful stuff, but I despise the "gangsta" culture some of it loves to glorify. Huey Freeman for president.

-Reggae Tier 4. I like a number of artists and would like to find more... but most of the "Ragga" stuff I've heard strikes me as just noise (this from a guy who listens to a lot of thrash metal).

"Stage and Screen"? I don't think that should count... they tend to cover most genres in movie soundtracks... even minimalist compositions aren't exclusive to movies or theater.

"Vocal"? Is this referring only to a cappella songs, or..? Y'know what? Nevermind.

Suffice to say Allmusic.com's genre list leaves a lot to be desired.

I listen to at least six or seven of those genres, so Tier 1.
Clinging on to just one is a good way to miss out on awesome stuff.
