Poll: How Do You Justify Music Piracy?

i dont really care much for the licenced stuff, there is enough music being made for free.
The main thing musicians have going for them are performances, you can really pirate a live performence, by that i mean that a recording is not live.

Please go turn yourself in and accept the $10.000.000 lawsuit because Copyright Infringement also includes stuff like copying stuff from a CD to an iPod or similar.

Bands themselves make more money off Merch and gig tickets than CD's, more than half of that goes to the labels/producers.

Plus, they get people interested in their music.

If i like the band's music I go out and watch them play, maybe twice if i can, then i buy their t-shirt. This way I can make sure the band gets as much money as possible!

This is the best thing you can do for an artist, good on you sir!

Our band is just uploading our own music to torrents and hoping the buzz gets us some attendance at gigs.

The only thing that could sorta justify music-piracy is that it helps the artist in question.
Think about it, they make almost nothing from recordsales compared to live-shows and tours and endorsment deals and merch.
The ones who loose money because people pirate the music are the companys. Artist just get more well-known.

And also: this topic has been nagged to hell and back by now, can't we just talk about something else? Like... Hell, I don't know.. Mid 19th-century Russian-agriculture? Just, something other than piracy/pirate-whine...

Seeing as bands make sweet fuck all off record sales, I prefer streaming off youtube/getting records from my friends, and buying shit at concerts instead. I'm not pirating, but I'm not supporting the antiquated model which benefits the band least of all. Jonathan Coulton gave each song in his whole "Song a week" thing away for free on his site, so when I went to his show, I made sure to buy a t-shirt to support him. I think independant online distribution is going to be a lot more popular in years to come. I'd forsee cheaper albums with more money going directly to bands. A ?5 record where the band gets even half that would still get them much more than now.

Ehm, pardon me, I do not justify it either, but that is so far from true that it's silly.
Like it's already been mentioned in the thread:

I don't have to justify it, it's legal in the Netherlands
Uploading isn't, though.

But the only time I ever downloaded music, is when I couldn't get a hold of this particular CD.
After spending hours at the local Free Record Shop, I could only find 2 Iron Maiden cd's and not a single Ayreon one. So I downloaded them, until I could get a hand on the cd's.

I bought them as soon as I could. Only need the first, self titled Iron Maiden album to finish my complete Iron Maiden cd set.

It's a shame that CD distribution is so crap poor here for anything older then 20 years and isn't main stream music like Queen or Golden Earring.

Oh, and yes, I know of that thing called iTunes, but the point of a cd collection is the actual cd's.

It's 3-4 minutes of sound.

This is of course a shitty argument, but it doesn't change how I feel about it.

Cool, thats what my band is doing, we are chucking up our rough demos on torrents and uploading our practices to youtube, if you are interested our first gig will be coming to youtube soon in high quality and later this summer our album will be done and free to download.

I just finished reading, and I just have to say: That was great!
It was a fascinating and interesting read.
In my opinion, It's nothing more (or less) than the truth.
All the vital issues that seems to go ignored.

kind of hypocritical here (I do pirate stuff) but piracy is wrong. the only time it would be fine would be if the game is no longer out and you cant find a copy. every other time its stealing.

I'm in a band too, I'd rather people came to our gigs and downloaded our music for free than the other way around
