The fast running sort could be anything. Indeed 28 days/weeks later are not zombies at all. They could be any other insane bonkers whackjob. That they are alive or dead is barely relevant.
Right now I am waiting with bated breath for the film adaptation of the book "World War Z" which should have traditional zombies and which illustrates everything that is horrific about an end of the world event. Read it, it is great.
