"Meh-lay"

Because its the "correct" way to pronounce it...

Assigning a long E sound to both "e" and "ee"? Madness
Wait... why would I pronounce "lay" as a long E. Based on how it's spelled, it should be a long A. According to Google Translator's text to speech, it should be the long E, but still.
Well melee is a French word and the actual spelling has one of those tick things above the e, which is where the "ay" sound comes from.

That's fine, but my main question here is why would I pronounce "ay" as a long E as you implied? According to Google Translator though, Meh-lee is the correct version (based on how I would pronounce Meh-lee).

May-lee

I'm constantly told it's wrong, but it's how I've been saying it for years.

EDIT: Wikipedia says it's pronounced May-lay. Case closed, Wikipedia rules all.

I pronounce it "May-Lay" now, but when I was younger (and before I was corrected by my much-smarter-than-I friends), I used to pronounce it, "Meh-Lee."

I also used to pronounce Asylum, as, "Az-ih-lum."
And, Paladin, as, "Puh-lah-din." Like... Aladdin with a P at the front.

Edit: Come to think of it, I do the same thing with Saladin. I pronounce it like Aladdin with an S at the front, and still do even though I know its wrong.

Of course I have to be difficult, but I pronounce it kinda halfway between "May-lay" and "Meh-lay".

I use to say mee-lee but since being on the escapist and other such sites, every one says may-lay, so I say that now.

I pronounce it Mee-lee. I pronounce it incorrectly.

May-lay is correct I believe. Keep in mind there's meant to be an accent in the spelling; it's not just 'melee'.

I blame Super Smash Bros.
Indeed I have the same situation, if someone were to ask me how to say "Melee" I'd have to go "SUPER SMASH BROTHERS...MEE LEEEEEEEEEEE" in my head to figure it out. :D

Bouquet - Bokay
Croquet - Crokay
Buffet - Buffay
Mnemonic - Nemonic
Rogue - Rowg
LeBeaux - Lebo
Faux - Fo
Arc D'Triomp-- know what? I'm all done here.

The word is not English. I bet you don't call the feudal Japanese warriors of old, 'samu-rays' do you? Or do you actually pronounce 'knight' ki-niggit like the Frenchman in Monty Python and the Holy Grail? For that matter, why isn't it spelled, 'pithon?'

I might be feeding a troll, but even if I am, this promotes a healthy discussion, so I'm feelin' pretty bro right now.

May-Lay, that way I can pretend I'm in a British romance novel.

"Oh dearest, may I lay beside you and muse sweet nothings into your suppple ear?"
