Poll: How does your area treat homosexuality?

South (New) Jersey, so its sorta this large border area between the North and the South. On the one hand, there are a lot of supporters here, and I've received more vocal support than I have flak. On the other hand, the people here who are homophobes are usually so violently, like when I intervened in a rape when three guys were trying to "rape you [the victim, a lesbian] straight". So its either on the okay/meh side, or very, very bad here.

No one I've met here really wants to discriminate against gays, and most people are very okay with the idea of same sex marriage. They have no problem with them ideologically. However, when a gay couple walks past them at the pub they'll laugh and make jokes to each other.

It's pretty good, not amazing.

There's a good number of stupid Mormons in Las Vegas who have the opinion that homosexuality is second only to murder as a sin. Even those that don't hate feel unnerved around them. Not hating Mormons, i've known plenty of good ones, the church stance dancing around makes it a real grey area though.

So while we can't get support needed to legalize marriage, most people support domestic partnerships. I can kiss my partner at the local mall without people comming up to me and telling me i'm evil, although i'm not sure how it is for guys.

I live in a city that's mostly conservative despite being east of chicago, so that means hypocritical religious folk where there's a bar and a church on every corner with three christian schools close to one another.

Needless to say, it's rather hostile. I Went to one of those schools and when I hit 12 I realised I liked the guys as well as the girls. I'm bisexual but at the time I didn't know what was going on but according to the school it ment I was "Turning gay" and therefore a bad person. I developed a lot of self hate, terrified people might find out and was praying to be "made straight again". It was so bad it severely affected my personality and confidence to the point I didn't I didn't have ANY and didn't talk to the girls I liked and didn't have my first kiss or and sexual experience until I was in college and even then I couldn't bring myself to date anyone or form relationships. The only relationships I had were sexual and even saw a married couple for a time. It took a lot of work to correct what religion did to, and still I have lingering issues. I can say for a fact sexuality is NOT a choice because there's no way I would have put myself through all that willingly.

Another person who was bisexual and open about it in the same school got really harsh treatment from so called "christians" and didn't take it well. I don't remember what happened to him.

I hate this town, it really screwed me up, but I had to move back to it from LA when I got cancer and needed treatment. It's not friendly to anyone but straight people at all.

I live in the middle of nowhere, and the all of the property close to mine is owned and inhabited by the rural contingent of the baby boomer generation...

So it's not very widely accepted around my house, but if you go 30 miles to the nearest big city, it's accepted just fine, mostly.

Actually, there was a much wider acceptance of it back when I was active duty US Army.

Actually, despite being in the South, it's pretty accepted here from what I can tell. Some people are against it, sure, but for the most part, they keep to themselves about it.

I live in a very hippy town so prettymuch everyone's treated like a human being here. That's not to say there aren't people who dislike homosexuality, just that they know to keep their mouths shut and their thoughts hidden from public scrutiny.

I live in South Carolina. No. They are not fond of it here at all.

I live in Oregon, and Oregon has a pretty vocal LGBT population. Portland is kind of a hipsters paradise, so all in all, homosexuality (or really any sexuality) is generally accepted around here. I certainly think it's better than most other places in the US.

That said, it can still be really rough for LGBT people. It's not something that's accepted universally yet, anywhere, so even the places that are better by comparison are still bad.

Personally, I don't care who anyone sleeps with, so long as they're willing and safe about it.

I live in a small, slightly affluent (middle-class) area of the UK and there hasn't been any outright intolerance of homosexuality, but I am certain that everyone is incredibly reserved. My school doesn't deal with it; in my entire life of education (twelve years, now), I haven't been aware of a single lesson taught about homosexuality, or any discrimination to do with it, which is probably the cause of my town's insecurity about it.

Think of it this way, if there were a gay-bar to open in my town, it would close within its opening week - the middle-aged fascists and their unfortunate children outweigh me, a couple of my friends, and maybe one-or-two other people.

Fortunately, I have found solace in the internet.

Well, for the yougner generator we all support it to great extents, but our conservative leaders and old people in the area which make up a minority don't agree with our views, but since they have the governmental power of our part fo the states, there's not much we can do...

I live in Louisiana.
That should say enough about people's general opinion of homosexuality. It seems to be tolerated, if resentfully so, in Covington. However, at my school I'm friends with some gay people. They're the nicest people at the school.

I should mention, it's mostly my gifted class who, out of the entire school, are welcoming of gay people. The rest of the school... not so much.

Isn't Asbury Park technically South Jersey though if you're going strictly by "anything south of the Raritan is South Jersey"?

Southern Jersey (especially the pineys) really is the start of "Appalachian" culture.
