I'm just wondering how long everyone thinks people should date before they get engaged? I've been dating my girlfriend for over a year and one of her friends asked us tonight when we were planning on getting married (annoying *****). Now I'm wondering about how long I have to decide if I want to ask before I miss my chance and if her friend asking the question sped up that timeline.

I say 2-3 years, it gives you enough time to see if your right for each other, dont want any quickie divorces do we... do we?

6-8 weeks if the ad for Russian Brides is anythng to go by.

Seriously though, it really depends on the people involved and there are way too many variables in this sort of thing to make a conclusive statement on the issue.

I've been with my girl for a bit over two years, but we are both 18. As tempted as I am to propose right now, I can't see anything happening till we are both finished uni.

No need to rush things unless you're absolutely sure. Or unless you're dying to get married and start reproducing...

I'm not dying for either so I say > 5 yrs

I concur there are too many variable to give a set amount. Its like asking someone how long you should fry bacon... no responsible person would give you a set time.

I'd say never. But then, I have never thought of marriage as important.

I guess 3-4 years, if you really have to get married, but why bother?
I would have said 2-3 myself, but it was just that dumb ***** asking that question that got the ball rolling. I'm scared she might have put thoughts in my girlfriends head that weren't there before.

This! I'll stick on the "Be miserable, and never happy. And never commit. And never pretend to be grown up"-bandwagon Max seems to be on. I just seems to be a happier place =D

All I'm saying is that, were I with someone, I wouldn't need to get married to know I'd be with them.
Seems pointless, is all.
Why, yeah. But I think you're forgetting the legal preferances about it. For instance. If you're injured, and are in hospital, your spouse can visit you off-visit-hours. Inheretance. If one of you, should pass. Etc. And basicly, it shows that on the paper, you want to spend the rest of your life with this person. That you're sure enough this is the person for you, that you promise to never be with anyone else. That you make a "contract" out of it ...

Wow, this shows me to read the post before voting in the poll, I thought OP meant how long til you personally get engaged. Whoops.

On Topic: I think it varies from couple to couple. I know people who were ready to get married from the first time they met. I also know a couple who was engaged/ lived together for 8 years before finaly getting married.

I've been with my gf for 5 years, we live together but are in no rush to tie the knot.

I don't really see what the big deal with marriage is these days, it's not like you love someone more once you marry them, or love them less if you don't.

I've been with my girlfriend for 5 years and I have yet to propose, but I'm workin on remedying that. But I would say, baring any crazy religious concerns that you should have lived together for at least 1 year and you should know you're sexually compatible.

Not really. I remembered the tax cuts and such.
But anyone can get married (except for gay dudes and ladies, unfortunately.) I guess I just didn't care about those things.
Why, yeah of course. Everyone's entitled their own opinion. Me for instance. I'm not planning on getting married ... Any time, actually (But then again, I'm not exactly on the lookout for a partner either). I was just replying, trying to apply some logic to what the points of marrige is ..

I've been with my girlfriend for four years and living together for three years, and we're not thinking about getting engaged any time soon. That seems normal to me. But come to think of it, all four of our respective parents have had two divorces each, so maybe that has something to do with it.

We're also atheists. I think marriage is a bigger issue for people from religious families. Because of the no sex outside marriage rule, it becomes normalised for couples to marry quite quickly, so even if you don't follow the rule yourself your family might expect you to marry.

Personally I think marriage is pretty unnecessary, aside from an excuse to have a party. I've seen so many marriage fail that I don't believe the "until death" hype.

What you mean? What is cool?
And don't answer "everything", because then I'll have to come for you again. And you know you don't want that ..
