Depends. Probably about 2-3 years. If I could last that long with somebody I'd probably think they were the right person to marry.

My parents got married in 6 months, been married for almost 19 years, anniversary is the same day as Pearl Harbor. Course the reason my mom married was for my dad's driving.

I voted less than a year.

My ex-wife and I dated for about two years before I proposed.

My ex-fiance and I never really dated, just went straight into engagement. We were best friends for about six months before that though. Just she had been dating someone else at the time.

My fiance now though I've known for about four months. I plan on marrying here as soon as money permits. And yeah, I know you can get married with little money, but I want everything perfect.. for her. Hopefully she'll only get married once, so it needs to be special.

My mom and step-dad went on a blind date mid-December. Thier wedding was on Febuary 8th. Not sure how much of that less than two months was dating and how much was engagement, but they've been married almost 25 years now. And still going strong.

im 13, and im hoping to get married to a cute, intellegent person at an early age (hopefully about 20-25). but sadly, that cocktail is hard to find these days.

oh yes, she also needs to be a good person that has nothing against or love games :)

Five years or above. Then again such trivial matter doesn't matter much to me. Neither am I a very social person, so I'd probably take even longer time to find anyone I like.

Well, I put 1-2 years, but this is wishful thinking as I'll almost certainly die alone.

You have to have someone who at least enjoys your company before you can get engaged...:[

Edit: On a less depressing note(it's been a pretty shitty day for me), I'd say 1-2 years of dating justifies getting engaged.

Get engaged when you are ready - the fact that you are asking strangers on an internet forum suggests that you are not yet ready for the commitment.

In my opinion people should live togheter for a year or two before they should be engaged. Moving in with each other after you're married is a very bad idea in my opinion since you don't yet know how it is to live with each other.

Depends on how old you are. I'd say that you should'nt get married, or engaged for that matter, until after you are finished with your studies and have a proper job.
If this is a fact, I would say 1-2 years.

When i'm ready?

I don't want to set myself a time limit, when I feel like I want to, and its right, i'll propose.

In general I think people are emotionally 'ready' to get married after about 2 years of knowing each other. But there are many exceptions to that.
