Been playing DDO for 3 years in May, and wouldn't even think about playing a different game!

I played beta way the hell back when it was released, it was okay.
It is SOOOO much better than Beta. All the mistakes and problems have been fixed (ok forthe most part)

What has changed in two years? Crafting (to a degree) has been added. Cap to 16 (about to go to 20), several large Mods have been added along with explorer areas to match. Monks. No Marketplace Tent. Three Barrel Cove has been drastically altered. There's more but I am too tired to care.
There I was, just innocently reading along when suddenly "Wait, what?"

I had written on DDO long ago when I read about it from initial player reviews and PC Gamer, promptly returning to my monk characters in NWN1 and more recently NWN2. Please tell me how the Monk is going, I have always found it intriguing.

Oh, and the other big sell for me when playing any D&D like game is player strongholds that we get to build almost from scratch or at the very least earn improvements for, especially in the form of fun NPCs. Anything like that or are the adventurers still endlessly wandering around and causing mischief like vagabonds and hobos? Nothing seems to motivate and ground me in a campaign more than having my character build himself a meaningful home, otherwise it might as well just be another shoot N loot, kicking down doors to find the next sap to hack N slash while chugging healing potions like they are going out of style, trying to convince myself I am not just trying to commit character suicide.

I downloaded the trial moments ago. It's late though, so I'll probably activate and start playing tomorrow.

Be looking for a fresh-faced gnome bard tomorrow morning, folks.
We lack gnomes XD. But we do have bards and they are welcome in most any party! Healing and buffs are yummy! :)

If you are on Argonesson or Thelanis let me know...I'm in a helping mood lately and with VP Biden (ass) ruining my day today, I won't be leaving the house.

Monks are in and they are different (a tad) from PnP (I hate using that, all I see is a type of transistor.) They have enhancements that go down elemental paths. They grant a stance and extra damage on one attack. To get the damage you have to hit whatever button it is hotkeyed to. It equates to lots of button mashing as there are 4 paths (fire, water, air, earth) and 4 levels to each (it's hard to do but with planning you can get all 4 levels...you need 18 in each corresponding stat to get them.) Many believe monks to be gimped but I know for a fact that one played and planned well can be leaps and bounds better than many fighters (unless a stun DC in the high 30s, 60+ AC, decent HPs, and base damage of 3d6 at level 20 is gimped.) OH! The stats. Earth is tied to CON, Fire to STR, Air to DEX, Water to WIS. WIS also figures into your stunning fist DC(stunned creature=auto crit) and your AC.

There is still no player housing. It is one of those things we are told they want to bring us but with Monks, the New Player Area and overall polishing of the game (to make it smoother and better for new people) it has been pushed down the line with Druids, Half-Elves, and Half Orcs.

Never heard of it till I looked into this thread. If it's the type of game I think it is, I probably won't get into it!

Monks are the bees knees man. My favorite character is my Monk. High AC, Good HP, damage is okay (better when we get transmuting handwraps, etc.). Plus they took great pains to make them look different than any other class when fighting. You get to be all Kung Fu like. What could be better than to have a halfling monk pimp slap a giant to death?

The monk is one of the more twitch based classes, but can do some nice stuff in addition to going all Jet Li on people.

Monks can self heal, group heal, ress, remove blindness, curse, etc.

Monks can give short buffs that help the party, such as blur, spell point buff, etc.

and in a jam, they can spam special elemental effects to make thier dps increase. (Fire, lightning, cold and force damage)

As you fight you build up Ki which is used to fire off special elemental attacks, resses, etc.

the stances affect stats, dr, speed, etc. so you are quite flexible when playing. Abundant step will let you jump huge distances easily (Titan Raid is so much easier now).

Right now the Monk is not the elite character of choice, lacking the new greensteel craftable weapons, etc. but on normal and hard high end quests, mine seems to do pretty well. Often times I am last one standing, finish off the mobs, ress the cleric and get the party back up and going. :)

Wow so many people in here who are on both sides of the coin. If you are playing now than you already know how addictive it is. If you've never played, you need to be aware that it isn't like the other MMOs out there. You are not wandering the world just fighting whatever comes your way. The combat is instanced. This means you choose what and where you will be questing. You enter a quest with up to 6 companions, all of whom have the possible capability of talking to you via voice or hearing you at least. You go through the quest killing, figuring out, or whatever. At the end you get xp and then an end reward, and of course whatever you looted from the many chests.

If you like RPG type games then I highly recommend the 10 day free trial at least to see what you might be missing.

It's not for everyone, I 100% agree. But not to try it and see is a diservice to yourself. If you don't try you will never know. Just like I had to try WOW and EQ. I didn't like them as much as DDO so I stuck with that.

Nope. I used to play Guild Wars a lot but now I simply don't have the time to play MMORPGs.

I played it a couple of years ago, and really liked it, but I ran into some issues. Since there are quite a few people on here who still play, maybe you could tell me if they've addressed them at all. I was playing just before the patch when drow were released, and at that point, there wasn't a lot of solo-able content, and it took me about ten to twenty minutes to find a group for quests. Then the patch came out, and 90% of the server went and made a drow to level up, as their stats were all around better. I didn't mind drows being a little better, but now it was taking me closer to an hour to find a group for an instance. They started implementing solo-able content, but it was all on the lower level things. If I tried to do a non-solo content by myself, I could usually kill a few mobs before dying, but since you didn't get xp till the end of the instance, and mobs didn't drop anything, unless I happened upon a chest, I was dying repeatedly, using up resources (and if I remember right, losing xp for dying, but I'm not 100% on that one) and making no net gain.

So my question is this: Have they changed it at all to make it easier to hop on, do a quest, and hop off without waiting to get a group to do the instances? And if not, is there at least some reward for trying things on my own when I can't find a group? Are all the solo-able quests still low level quests? I really did love playing it, but at the time I couldn't justify paying for an mmo when I was spending all my time sitting in a tavern waiting for a group and not actually playing. Thanks in advance.
