I prefer an realistic amount of gore.

I got nothing against Decapitaitons, infact I can quite enjoy them such in a game as Jedi Knight.
I don't mind the coupius amount of blood in Way of the Samurai either.

Jedi Outcast. Oh hell yes. Gotta love the saber dismemberment cheat.

I don't mind gore and/or copious amounts of blood in games if it's meant to be humorous or over-the-top. On the other hand, I start to get uncomfortable when it's meant to shock or disturb the player.

Minimal, preferably none. Gore annoys me.

I actually hacked into Fallout 3 and turned off the blood spray and dismemberment. The blood spatter in the environment was still a bit much.

The obvious caveat is horror games, but even then, Amnesia wasn't excessively gory until the incredibly messed up end.

I prefer realism. If I slash a guy in the neck with a sword, I want his head to fall off. I do not, however, see any need for a high-pressure fountain of blood from the severed stump. If I shoot a guy in the torso with a shotgun from five feet, it makes sense that he'd have a bloody great hole in him. However, he need not explode into a shower of generic gibs. That is gratuitous.

Games that try to sell themselves on gore--mostly a dying breed, thankfully, Splatterhouse being the most recent exception--really come across as immature and stupid. Actually, EA tried to do that with Dead Space 2's marketing campaign, and that may have been even stupider.

I don't really mind the amount (I do want it to exist in the game), but what I like is actual gore that stays on the environment. None of the slight pulse of blood and then nothing, if I've just shot a dude in the guts with a shotgun, I want them splattered on the wall he was standing in front of!

Whatever suits the tone of the game.

That said, I don't get shocked by violence in games. As a result, I'd rather have more violence than is realistic than unrealistically little, since the minimalist censorship just makes everything feel cardboard and hollow. If you're already shooting people, there should be some indication that your bullets are hitting them.

Lots of blood and a few limbs is all I need.
One of my favorite Half life 2 mods has the greatest gore I've seen in a while.

Gore? I can never get enough.

Seriously though, it really does depend on the type of game and really the entire game and the approach to the gore. Is it more cartoony like Team Fortress 2 or is it heading more towards the Real end with the likes of Battlefield. Or is it the "hyper-real" like Doom, it isn't cartoony but it is so over the top with exploding aliens/demons in fountains of gore, it works there but wouldn't work for CoD so well.

It's like asking how much salt you like to season your food with, I can't say one potion size is fit for all dishes.

Depends on the genre, aims ("outrageous fun" or "serious story"[footnote]With the obligatory exception [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.263822-Coming-Up-With-Topic-Titles-is-Hard-Saya-No-Uta] to confirm a general rule of preposterous amounts of gore not going over too well with extremely serious and heavy themes.[/footnote]?), and visual style of the game, though generally a realistic amount is satisfactory.

If I'm playing something supposedly taking place in a realistic setting, then having five billion litres of blood splatter all around me kind of kills immersion. If on the other hand's it's an overblown Unreal Tournament style murderfest, then heads can roll freely.

So no amount or depiction of ultraviolence and gore bothers me in and of itself. Only when it clash with other thematics or design choices do I find it unfitting.

There is not set universal good amount of gore. Some games should be more gory than others. God of War and Mortal Kombat would be nothing without the excessive gore, but you don't want the same kind of gore on a realistic shooter game.

None actually. It's okay to have loads of gore in games that try to be realistic or that has gore as one of its selling points. But i prefer when a game has more silly violence where the fighting/shooting itself is gratifying enough without trying to woo me with gore.

It doesn't really matter to me either way. Excessive gore is nice and all, but it's not something that's going to make me more likely to buy a game. In fact, I'm probably less likely to buy a game that sells itself on the gore because it seems extremely childish to me, which is why Visceral is so lucky that I was already interested in Dead Space 2 before their horrible marketing team had a chance to colour my opinion of it. I'm not less likely to buy a game for having gore, of course, it just worries me when a game can't seem to find anything more relevant about itself to advertise (which is what makes the "your mom hates Dead Space" advertising campaign so confusing, because DS2 has so much more going for it than just the gore).

I really prefer games that have a realistic amount ,yet are not stingy or heavy handed with it a medium amount.

Little to no gore. I play games that have gore in them, sometimes a lot, (gears of war 1 and 2, deadspace, dark sector, multiple resident evil's), but the gore rarely factors into the 'enjoyment', and is usually just set dressing to me (though I won't lie, the headshots in gears can be rather satisfying).

generally speaking, if a game tries to sell itself on its gore content, I tend to ignore it.

Depends on the game.

For example...In Conker's Bad Fur Day the more gore the better!

but in something say Halo I dont need decapitations or amputations to have fun.

the gore in Prototype was acceptable. after all, the threat of zombies is nullified when your a very brutal superman. as long as it doesnt show the gore in excruciating detail, like God of war 3, its not so bad

I chose other because the industry can't deliever what I want.
I want, no - I need realistic gore. When I say realistic I mean realistic.
Your hand won't get blown off by a nearby shortgun. You can take one or two bullets in your kevlar vest, but the bloody modules need to change to show bullet holes. When you get shot, red stuff doesn't come out like spray in the air and then vanishes!
Therefore in order for my dream to come true it would require a game that is based solely on melee combat. Playing a first person melee combat game with realistic gore is my dream.

Spartacus: Gods of the Arena amounts of blood are good. Wouldn't mind hitting someone with a .50 cal in a game like CoD and seeing a massive hole in them or a missing head. Manhunt and things take it abit far but i enjoy realistic amounts in games that have the potential.

Oblivion w/ gore = twice as good.

CoD games with W@W gore = twice as good.

I prefer "visceral" over "gory". For example, seeing wounds on your enemies in RDR makes gunfights more satisfying, it's not gory just for the sake of it.
