Well, let's just say we find earth-like planets in "Habitable Zones" which are suitable to live on once our fucking planet eats itself. This is after we have been able to conduct deep space exploration and travel, we have hover cars and laser beams and all that futuristic stuff.

But how should we name the planets?

They already have names based on stars - that's just a simple, easily understood system. For regular names, such as Earth and Mars, colloquial names popularized by the press will probably be adopted.

I should be allowed to name them

So there'd be planet Goldeneye, planet Spagetti bolognse, planet BFG, planet John Wayne... the list goes on.

Name it after the star it orbits. For example, take a planetary system that orbits the star Polaris. Just name the planets Polaris I, Polaris II, Polaris III etc. If they're eventually colonized, I'm sure the people who colonize them will eventually come up with unique names.

A religious name sounds better somehow, it has a nice ring to it. "Zion" sounds more appealing than "ZBM88"...

We should name them by walking out of our front door in the morning and naming them after the FIRST thing we see.

For example: My new planet will be named HotGirlWithReallyBigBoobsRunning

Whoever discovers a planet should be required by law to use the first word or phrase that pops into their head. Of course, if you'd need a numbering system to cope with the massive influx of "bugger me, it's a planet" and "badger harpsichord".

They should have simple scientific names, such as your "49LYA", but also colloquial names, probably after gods. Like we have at the moment with starts really, after all if you lived on a planet I'm sure you would prefer for it to have a name, but for communication and scientific purposes a standard code system would be vital. Not that we will ever go to another star system, let alone communicate between them, but just hypothetically...

Well kinda, they were named after mythological figures. The tradition was carried out through the Renascence to present day

I'd like all planets to be named after the sun they revolve around plus a Roman numeral.
We'd be living on Sol III.
We wouldn't be Terrans but Solians or Solans.
The scientific names are too difficult to pronounce. But I think we've already run out of names for stars, so we'll have to resort to the scientific ones, anyway.

Name them a bunch of certine ways.

-People of great influence/importance.
-Characters of myth/stories/etc.
-Other planets from movies/tv/literature/games/etc.
-Just come up with something that sounds good.
-Use a word that means something of relevance (ideally, a different language.Ex-Curahee, which is a Native American word meaning 'We Stand Alone' or 'We Stand Alone Together'.).

Name them in the same way they named 'Uranus', choose names that are faintly amusing because they sound dirty.

and the mythological figures were gods to people in Rome
