I think it's a good idea to name them after the planet they revolve around, like Sirius 1, Sirius 2, etc. Nice and simple.

I would say to name them after people, but eventually we'll run out of people...

I say we name them after planets on TV shows like Kobol, Bajor, Tarn-Vedra, and Caprica. That would be awsome.

Combine the first two.

Most people can use regular names, but have scientific designations for each one as well.

But since we got most of the Greco-Roman gods out of the way, how about the Norse gods?

Don't tell me you wouldn't want to live on the planet Thor.
Hades, Persephone, Demeter, Hera, Athena, Hephaistos, Vulcan, Ares, Heracles (technically a demigod), Apollon, Dionysos, Aisclepios, Hermes, Amphitrite, Achilleus, Dike, Tyche, Moira and so forth.

This was primarily greek gods and a hero. There are plenty more heroes and minor deities. And then there is Rome as well.
They already used some of those names, albeit Romanized.
I.E.- Ares= Mars, Jupiter= Zeus, etc.
Although I am eager to see a Vulcan planet, but I think it'd be some ball of mere molten rock. Hades and Hermes are the only ones that sounds good to me, but I think they'd name the system after some of the city-states or islands like they did in Mass Effect (like the Sparta System).

Writing that as a return address on an envelope would blow my mind.
If we discover it soon enough, you could be its supreme overlord or something. Add that to your return address, and you've got an epic letter. Nobody would ignore John Johnston, Unquestioned Ruler of Thor.
I know that some of them has been used already. But I figured that there is too many planet to be really picky. :) So I think we can manage both Mars and Ares. Besides, Aphrodite kinda works for a planet, even if we already got Venus.

As for city states I guess there are a few. Corinth, Athens/Attica, Sparta/Laconia, Thebes, Mycenae, Euboia, Delphi, Delos, Tarentum and so forth.

I suppose Greek people could be used as well. Socrates, Herodutos, Xenophon, Kimon, Themistokles and stuff like that. It works better than Roman names at least. A planet called Marcus Tullius Cicero just don't have a good flow. Though I guess some of the cognomens could work in a pinch.

Personally, I think they should be named after famous scientific discoveries. Also, you listed Vostok as a planet from a video game; in real life, the Vostok was the ship that put the first man in space.

Oh, real mature. That ought to be renamed so people stop making that joke. Something more tasteful, like Urectum.

I also could go for a Hannibal planet. Ruled by a warlike elephant people.

Sadly, I recently found out the backstory behind the name... Ouranos, the father of Kronos, grandfather of Zeus.
It ruined the joke for me.

Out of what you listed, corporations make the most sense. I'm up for whatever gains the scientific community the most additional funding.

We take the first 100 hundred names posted by random people, add a monkey and a dart board, then...voila! The planet has a name.

Well, didn't you hear? They renamed it to Urectum in 2620 to end that joke once and for all. :p

Edit: I forgot what I wanted to say: in classical Greek Ouranos means sky or heaven. (Which does not negate what you said. I was just throwing in some etymology.)

I say go with the star they orbit + number. It is a simple and easy to understand system. When religion and the names of people start getting involved, that is when mass revamping of the naming scheme becomes necessary. Then it is just a PITA for everyone. It has happended in biology, it will happen in other fields too.

I think we should keep with the mythological names, but this time with Evil deities, like Cerberus or Belial

I didn't vote for the simple reason that my option "all of the above" was not there. Simply put no one naming system is going to work given the limited vocabulary compared to the number of planets.

I'm also a big fan of "he who discovers it, gets to name it".

This includes when a civilized people overcome an uncivilized one and start changing all the names. :p

At any rate, perhaps one day we will see a "Planet Therumancer".

I agree, planetary nomenclature should be the discoverer's decision.

If I ever discovered a planet, I will name it "[i\]Parke[/i]os", which resides in the "Richie" system.

Because i'm arrogant like that.

"Why do they call it the 'Richie' system daddy?"
"Well, son, that's because some prick a long time ago had an inflated ego."
