We already have a decent naming system but if someone wants to nickname habitable planets something (like the earth is known as earth but is now technically named Sol 3) then we should use the chance and honour some scientists, think Einstein, Pythagoras, Plato etc, or name them after gods/things from norse/roman/greek mythology.

But we are living on Sol 3.

The person who discovers the planet, shoudl choose a number from one to twenty six, each one will linked with a letter of the alphabet in no particular order. The said person must choose one of the numbers and is given the letter it corrisponds to. they must then flip a coin
Heads- A smart/sensible name
Tails- A rude/vulgar name

Furthermore, in the unlikely event of the coin landing on its side, the planet must be removed from existance to prevent further arguments of its name.

Im sure if we abide to these rules, all will be well.

Alternatively we could call them Earth.2, Earth.3, and so forth.

Derek, Collin and Gertrude.
Come on, Gertrude is better than Uranus, you know it in your heart to be true.

Only messing, I like the whole Godly names they have currently.

Religeouse we started with that why not finish?
Well kinda, they were named after mythological figures. The tradition was carried out through the Renascence to present day
and the mythological figures were gods to people in Rome
Guess you got me there. I guess I'm trying to say we should keep naming them according the that mythology. I thought you meant current Judeo-Christian/Muslim/etc figures. MY bad
I did get that vibe that we should name it like "Jesus" or "Mohammed".
But since we got most of the Greco-Roman gods out of the way, how about the Norse gods?

Don't tell me you wouldn't want to live on the planet Thor.

I think they should be named Dave. Except one. It should be called Gerald.
Plus, aliens that live on certain planets will likely have a name for their own planet.

I think we should just keep naming them after gods. Hopefully not the gods in a religion that is common, but like what we are doing right now. When that runs out, we could use names found in the mythology of those gods. What fun!

Writing that as a return address on an envelope would blow my mind.

I think it makes sense to name them after the star they orbit (i.e Mercury would be Sol 1 Earth would be Sol 3) n stuff because i think most other methods of namign would cause confusion

EDIT: Sorry i forgot how to count again earth IS sol 3 :p

Hades, Persephone, Demeter, Hera, Athena, Hephaistos, Vulcan, Ares, Heracles (technically a demigod), Apollon, Dionysos, Aisclepios, Hermes, Amphitrite, Achilleus, Dike, Tyche, Moira and so forth.

This was primarily greek gods and a hero. There are plenty more heroes and minor deities. And then there is Rome as well.

They already have names based on stars - that's just a simple, easily understood system. For regular names, such as Earth and Mars, colloquial names popularized by the press will probably be adopted.
I agree on naming after stars (Earth = Sol 3) but oh God, the press? They will be awful, sickening names. Perhaps we better have an international competition to think of names for planets instead.

most bodies have a numeric name, then later a name typically based on mythological figures, or some big names in science.

It's a system Im pretty content with for the most part.. granted were going to run out of names eventually and I'm sure drawing names from sci-fi will be more common ( to be fair most sci-fi planets are named from myth too, like Mannan in kotor...mannan is a celtic sea god, father of Llyr who is husband of Aife.)

though I do think that should we name a system certain things, and it happens to be inhabited, we should use the locals names for the planets and surrounding bodies ( granted we can pronounce them)

on the same note, I would sorta prefer that another species ( if able to) refer to our system in the names we gave them :p

there are a few things that come to mind that are already named off sci-fi, like Polaris, and magnitars stars are often called death stars and such.. I think that practice will just become more and more common over the next few generations.

They should take preexisting names and run them through an anagram machine.

I anagrammed my name and I got Slayer Pornos. See? Easier than making a meme.

I think it should be named according the My Law... Call them Mackinator001-999 then call w/e u want.

No. but really names shouldnt be the problem at the moment.

Besides, the Galaxies are moving further apart and it gets harder to do as time goes on.

The only places we'll be inhabiting anytime soon is Mars.

They already used some of those names, albeit Romanized.
I.E.- Ares= Mars, Jupiter= Zeus, etc.
Although I am eager to see a Vulcan planet, but I think it'd be some ball of mere molten rock. Hades and Hermes are the only ones that sounds good to me, but I think they'd name the system after some of the city-states or islands like they did in Mass Effect (like the Sparta System).

If we discover it soon enough, you could be its supreme overlord or something. Add that to your return address, and you've got an epic letter. Nobody would ignore John Johnston, Unquestioned Ruler of Thor.
