Polls that have jokes in them make the poll useless. How are you going to get a serious answer from some one when you leave them the option to be a smartass? :p

I believe that the polls are a substitute for short responses to a thread.

Instead of simply saying "I like X" in a thread, you take the poll option then leave.

It doesn't always work mind you, but it has worked on me.

Depends.

Are you trying to get blunt answers? Then yes.
Are you trying to get reasons behind the Answers? Then no.

Polls attract views, but lessen Posts.
They also get used for quick Lulz and easy Posts by Voting for the "Irrelevant Option".

So it pretty much depends on what you're trying to do with the Thread.
Also, I will be voting for Mayonnaise, seeing as "Depends" is not a choice.

Polls are useless if you put stupid options such as "Hold the maonaise." You are trying to see if polls are useful, please explain how that option helps you understand.

There is nothing that irks me more on this site than polls with stupid options.

Polls tend to bring more people in the the thread, no idea why, someone did a 1000th or 10000th post on the posting and replying habits of the escapist a few months ago.

As for gathering info, only if an extra silly selection isn't avalible.

I find that polls make people type alot less fleshy posts, Or none at all, They will just press "xxx" anwser and either move on or type a little post, However without polls you get alot more opinion and intressing posts.

They are usually useless, and are often used in cases of "Oh look, a checkbox! I'm going to tick it because I can". Sometimes, however, there is a trend that the OP wants to investigate, or if it's a VS. thread, it provides a quick preview of the response.

With stupid & pointless options like "Hold the maonaise" most people are going to click that option which in the long run will make a poll as useful as trying to light a fire using two pieces of paper.

As a general rule, most statistics and surveys are unreliable since it is absolutely impossible to account for every single person's viewpoint, no matter how large and diverse your sample group is you'll always have to generalise in the end.

Polls on here are subject to the same thing (as well as the fact that some questions are likely to only get answers from people who feel very strongly about it meaning it doesn't nessercarily give a accurate or valid answer).

I don't mind polls, as they tend to give people the response that they want. They aren't good for discussion though.

I also don't like silly poll options like "Waffles".

I mean does anyone ever use the info involved for anything?

Hopefully this one will be.
Polls like this are worthless, because most of the options are jokes.

Polls are only useful if they reach people of all walks of life, not just one neighborhood that happens to be overwhelmingly one sided on the topic that the poll happens to be about.

I like them, because I can feel like I'm contributing without having to type anything.

They can be useful as a measure of opinion, or particularly if you want to gauge which game is best, but often they're pointless and/or broken. I think the popularity of the mayonnaise option speaks for itself, which is interesting in that the least relevant poll option here actually is the most meaningful.

It helps me understand how the majority of the Escapist users think so I can be an arsehole and disagree with them.

I only see them as useful if they are well implemented and worded. They also should be used in situations which require concise answers without as much gray area because in many cases too much elaboration would be required.
