I think as long as we retain our sense of self-awareness then the idea is completely plausible. Perhaps we might stop appearing to be human, but in the end we will still retain the qualities of the human mind. What makes you think we're not just the "robots" of presumably deceased creators right now? Maybe if we succeeded in simulating self-awareness in A.I., then it would most likely be that the "robots" would just be the next line of creators in an infinite stream of creators. Then what has happened before will happen again, in an endless cycle.
Programming a sense of self-awareness and free onto an android is like the Master saying to his Slave, "I order you to be free! I condemn you to give your own life value! Take responsibility for your own actions!"
And the Slave wonders, "Am I actually free if I was ordered to be free?"
