I think as long as we retain our sense of self-awareness then the idea is completely plausible. Perhaps we might stop appearing to be human, but in the end we will still retain the qualities of the human mind. What makes you think we're not just the "robots" of presumably deceased creators right now? Maybe if we succeeded in simulating self-awareness in A.I., then it would most likely be that the "robots" would just be the next line of creators in an infinite stream of creators. Then what has happened before will happen again, in an endless cycle.

Programming a sense of self-awareness and free onto an android is like the Master saying to his Slave, "I order you to be free! I condemn you to give your own life value! Take responsibility for your own actions!"

And the Slave wonders, "Am I actually free if I was ordered to be free?"

This is all hypothetical and I think I might have went off-topic there and had a small dose of solipsism, but that's what I was thinking.

I wouldn't call it a soul... more an individuality.
Like a spark that gives people a drive. Something that makes you want to. Like determination, or courage, or impulsiveness, or outright foolishness.
That spark is the will to survive, the extension in humans being curiosity, curiosity means the ability to learn and therefore understand one's environment better and subsequently increase its chances of survival. Things like martyrdom and self sacrifice are brought on through idealism, idealism is one of the things humans created to help foster civilization(mainly through religion which is a great way to bring people together), civilization has also increased our ability to survive(as a species rather than individuals). It is all a means to an end, that end being the survival and/or transmission of your own genes to continue your legacy. People that claim they don't want children look at reality through a learned lense that tells them raising children is a burden.
That's my take on it. I take naturalistic logic and apply it to sociology and history. I still can't understand why people can't see the inherint(sp?) similarities between apes and humans.

Newclassic, I really don't think I'm ever going to meet you(Doesn't look like I'm going to get a chance to go to one of the Cons). I want to picture you as a freakishly awesome android thing. Humour me.

Mechanical beings that are self-aware? Let's not take the GLaDOS route....
