And this is why people annoy me on this issue. It's nothing more than wanting to see boobs, and trying to wrap their lustful desires in some noble-sounding cause about how, "there shouldn't be censorship," or, "video games need nudity to develop as an art form!"

You know what, nudity is not needed for anything. At all. Rarely is it used well in storytelling, and even Mass Effect was not a good example. Sex and nudity is almost always used as a crutch, a way of getting stupid guys to play the game just because it promises boobies.

There is no noble cause here: just someone trying to justify lustful desires with seemingly noble causes.

Also, FYI, it's not censoring if the original creators decide to leave it out. Seriously.

We are talking here about the appearance (or lack) of the side of a virtual persons breast. It really shouldn't matter this much. It's not worth banning, but neither is it worth getting upset about.

And though I feel like such a bastard for saying this, if you want to see boobs, plays with your girlfriend instead of your games

[sup]Or watch porn. If it's boobs you want, I'm pretty sure Redtube>Mass Effect 2[/sup]

People talk about removing this stuff, but that's what the rating systems are for. They're too busy worrying about the amount of blood and such rather than the nudity. God of War featured full on breasts and a sex mini game. Half the people had nipples showing anywho. But it's an M rated game just like the others

Ratings are there because of the content, the problem is, not many people actually pay attention to them, and parents buy their 7 year old sons games like God of War, because they heard it was good, and never even watch to make sure it's kid friendly, and then when they hear something about the game bad, they blame the game for not advertising it and go complaining about the game, when THEY didn't learn what they were giving their kid

Dante's inferno did the same thing (in spirit of copy pasted God of War gameplay, refer to Yahtzee's most recent Extra Punctuation if you want to say anything about that), with going so far as to have babies come out of a giant woman's bare nipples! There were tongues in those nipples as well...and this game didn't have that much controversy. Ratings tell people that there is nudity in games, and its parent's faults if they don't regulate what kids do or play

Btw, anyone hear anything about the controversy in Dante's Inferno about things like naked souls or baby spawning tongueing nipples? I sure didn't, but if anyone did, please let me know

Agreed, sometimes they know where the line stands, see [link]http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/98726-Rejected-Fallout-2-Childkiller-Vault-Boy-Image-Surfaces[/link] for a company who took something out because of controversy

Redtube doesn't have a Scion burying it's demonic, synthetic face into Miranda's chest.

Or Tali making out with Legion-with-Mordin's-head.

I beleive in free speech but, I beleive its OK to ban it when the artist meant it to be excessively insulting or offensive (when its totally taking advantage of the concept of free speech)

Scatch that, I beleive you should never censor anything because it violates free speech.

Can't remember why I made that image in the first place. I'm sure it was relevant to a discussion at the time.

Want sideboob? Play more JRPGs.
But Sensei
Do you think he can handle it?
OT: what he said, i love JRPG's and ill defend them till i die but, i cant deny that many of them are infected with a decent amount of Fanservice.

This isn't so much censoring art as it is censoring boobs. And it isn't even so much censoring boobs as it is making yet another attack on indecent material handed, somehow, to children who can't handle sideboob. You may think that the criticism it's receiving is an overreaction, but through the trickle-down effect, all some mother is going to know is that Bioware = hardcore porn for little Timmy. No, nobody said that--but that's what they hear.

I did feel that it was a bit weird in Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age.

The moments were supposed to be tender and romantic, Mass Effect 2 cut away before you would see anything really, so it kind of gets a pass.
Miranda and Jack not so much, alot of dry humping made it a bit awkward

Dragon Age's was just plain awkward, it showed what would be considered porn if it weren't for the insanely silly censoring method. Not much artistic about it, just intense awkwardness.

We are in a sensitive age where new media is literally pouring out of anything that can contain it. People are sensitive and it takes a long time for people to become un-sensitive.

The whole point of art is to push the envelope. I've had art I have done fussed over (which wasn't my intention by the way) and I actually felt pretty proud of myself because the wave of 'frenzy' actually made it so I reached a larger audience then I had projected.

If people didn't fuss we wouldn't know about a lot of things.
This and basically we are in our own little media art reformation just like the church reformation in a way. Some wish to censore violent video games or overly explict and complicated sotry lines, ME 1's means of having a sex scene. It will be a long time coming.

certain things are reasonable to ban, but sideboob is not such a thing. what is your thoughts on this?
My thoughts on this is you're being a little bit of a hypocrite here. You say boobies are fine but other things are not. Well, I suppose you mean stuff like on-screen child rape or something. Well, there are people who think differently. There are people who think that a flash is pushing it too far already and there are people who can't get enough of that wonderful violence. It's all a matter of opinion. While you might say that on-screen child rape is showing how our society degrades other people already might say so when a naked female is depicted.
My thoughts more speciffic are that some things, nudity, violence and gore should be allowed on tv for a speciffic audience. that somthings should only be allowed for people over a certain age group. but as you say child-rape and such, things that not are and hopefully never be socially acseptable should be kept away from normal people. let it stay at /b/
Rape, murder, theft, arson and pretty much any other crime are not socially accepable as well, still, they are being used in stories - for hundreds, even thousands of years. It is all just a matter of opinion.

It is very hard to say "this is okay, but this has to go" because there will always be someone to disagree with you and I don't think any of us is in the right to completely ban anything as long as it does not harm people.
Granted, art forms the mind and therefore every piece of medium will somehow influence people's thoughts, thus changing society, possibly in a bad way. But if we were to go by that rule, we wouldn't be able to have any sort of storytelling at all. Even the Teletubbies can make people aggressive. ;)
Well in literature, even those books where such things as rape have a major part, you do not see the picture of the rape on the cover of the book. the reason we think certain things are accseptable in different kinds of art are the impression that they leave on us. Sideboob and violence are two things that don't affect people very much, but if we were to witness a rape in FF things would be different. Even though there are movies containing rape and mutilation, just screw banning stuff and keep age rating it.

Finding a decent picture of FFX Yuna (as opposed to FFX-2 Yuna) which isn't hentai is difficult, so I opted for a decent cosplay of it instead.

I'm pretty damn sure the character was showing off some sideboob in game though.

Yes, there was summoner sideboob in the FFX game.

I agree with you in principle, but in practice generally find sex a bit schoolboyish and lame in games. This may be down to the way its handled, but I suspect its more to do with the limitations of the genre- I don't think you can do eroticism in a game the way you can in film or literature (at the least least noone has yet). Then again, I don't understand games of things you can do in real life-like football games. I like my gaming to involve things I'll never do, like flying a sci-fi VTOL or blowing shit out of an alien species that are geting up to no good...

That pic should say "no boobs, made in Japan". Haha, sterotype.

But seriously, I don't care if a character was only in there birthday suit or robed up like a stingy nun.
I have the same feeling in video games as movies, don't put nudity in just to do it! It will KILL a game or movie for me if I see some hardcore killing and then it cuts to a naked chick's jugs bobbling up and down for NO reason.

Afro Samurai Resurrection had nudity in there that just didn't belong, it was weird and most of all, took away from the action happening.

If I see a sex scene in a game (that belongs) then sure, bring on the jugs, but if it's just randomly put in there as a selling point, then I'd rather not see anything.
