Although I know a great MMORPG. It is called KoL, or Kingdom of Loathing. It is turn based so you don't get too addicted to it, but there is VERY little grinding in that game whatsoever. Even the classes you get to be are different, such as: Pastamancer, Disco Bandit, Turtle tamer. They sound weird, but the game is really good.
KoL is a lot better than most MMORPGs, but even that one ended up boring me. It took a few months to do so, though, so it might be worth a look for those of you who can stomach the genre.

Wow all the way! Runescape blows monkey nuts! I don't have a beef with ever-quest, it's pretty much the beginning and probably inspired the creaters of Wow to make one of the greatest and most successful videogames in the world. Honestly i think the only reason people play runescape is cause they are too cheap/poor to pay the 15 bucks a month for Wow.

The only MMORPG I've ever really played (as in, spent more than one part of a day) was Runescape. As much as I hate that game now, I used to really like it. I'm not sure why, maybe I just wanted that sense of accomplishment that I thought would come by reaching level 60 in mining, and all those other skills. Eventually I realized I was sitting at a computer all day clicking the same coloured group of rocks over and over again, and I immediately ran to my Xbox, popped in Halo, and started killing things.

In all seriousness, I've never gotten into MMORPGs because for one thing, they require an obscene amount of time and effort, mostly for grinding, and I find that to be really boring. Grinding is also the reason I dislike most RPGs. There's also the fact that they have a monthly payment, and I don't want to shell out that much money for something I'm probably going to drop in a week or so, when I can buy a single console game for much cheaper and enjoy it for a longer period of time. I've also realized most free MMORPGs are either crap, or they require monthly payments to actually get any of the good stuff (ie: Runescape) so I also lose interest in those rather quickly. There's also the people that you run into during those games, but I feel that if I start getting into that, I'll rant even longer than I already have.

I never got around to grinding in runescape and although the little jokes were funny, they were too few and far between. I played dungeon runners, but there was a lack of new monsters in that game, and now I play pirates of the caribbean online. WAIT! dont spam me. the game is actually fun and interesting so long as you ignore the disney license. I personally enjoy having a double barreled pistol (soon to be triple barreled) and being able to use throwing knives make everything cooler. I went into it expecting dreck, but the ship battles are satisfying, and although the PvP ships are won by having the biggest members ships, the land PvP is surprisingly balanced. Seriously, its a GOOD game. even for 15-year olds.

I spent mass hours on both Runescape and WoW in the past. Runescape was a fun time passer when I was younger, until about combat level 101-102, its lost my interest and became very boring...WoW had pretty much the same story actually, but I only made it to the mid 60's in the Outland before I quit. I tend to stay away from MMORPGS now, due to the insane amount of time you can spend on them without realizing it.

I would prefer to play WAR.
Runescape isn't bad compared with most other MMORPG's, it's a playable mmo, generic in all respects, saved by its good midi music and the fact it's browser based.

Oh, that's without factoring in the playerbase, if you chuck that one in there it's bloody unplayable.

I started out with AC then runescape... what a downgrade for me. Later on I played WoW from beta too right before bc came out. After that I played a few other mmo's free and P2P including EvE. Now I'm just anticipating WAR and have been since 2005.

(Sorry, haven't read the thread, but gotta write this down before I forget it.)

Why no EVE-o?

Also, an MMO is really just a shiny glorified chat client. There's no reason for playing an MMO at all if everyone there is intolerable. (I think that's the right word). Runescape has got the single worst crowd I've ever come across, and I've played Halo online. Alot. If it weren't for the crowd, RS would be a) a single player bore-grind-fest, and b) better.

I hate all MMORPG's with a passion. They ruined a friend, sucked away a year of my life, and in general, suck.
If I may ask, how was your friend 'ruined' ?

I used to play Runescpe a bit. The main thing I liked were the interesting quests but it was a really grind-tastic game so it got frustrating.
