or so the study [http://www.pcworld.com/article/236944/internet_explorer_users_are_kinda_stupid_study_suggests.html] seems to suggest.

personaly, I believe there are other factors involved that weren't considered, and the results of the study are unacceptably biased.

Thoughts?

EDIT: in case it wasn't clear, i don't endorse these results. i've only reported them.
don't shoot the messenger. o.o;;
Someone who uses IE simply because they don't know any other or haven't been bothered to change it? No. Someone who uses IE religiously while not trying the benefits of other browsers? Yes.

Not at all. At worst they're ignorant about browser software, probably because they don't care enough to bother looking up alternatives. Besides, I hear the new IE is actually quite good, and Firefox is the one that's falling behind.

It doesn't indicate a low IQ, but it does indicate that they know bugger all about the internet.

I'm stupid for using and Internet Explorer? IT'S A FUCKING INTERNET PROGRAM. I thought they were all the same. And isn't Explorer a default browser installed in every windows computer?
They're not the same. IE is the worst of them. It's the slowest and most insecure browser. Get yourself Chrome. You'll FEEL the difference.
IE 9 isn't that bad tbh(same security as the rest, almost as fast as chrome) and it doesn't take the mininimlist approach that chrome uses(so a bit more user friendly)

most of the hatred stems from IE6 which was that bad- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Download.ject

IE 8 was bit worse then chrome,Firefox but there all basically on even footing now

Yes, when people hate on IE, they mostly think of IE6. Although IE9 has improved, it's still nowhere near the speed or security of Chrome or Firefox.

security wise there basically all the same as they all use least user access(the big security flaw in IE 6 was it put itself on the same level as the user)
its biggest flaw seems to be memory leaks(and that also happens in Firefox and is related to flash)
Every browser has its flaws and strengths
between the big 4 IE isn't the problem child it use to be
it just follows the rest of the MS programs in it Sacrifices preformice for User friendless.

THIS!
You're not stupid, you were just unaware of the flaws IE has. Right?
Quickly, get Chrome and discover the magic of tabs and incognito mode!
.... IE9 has tabs and inprivate browsing. your plate isn't offering anything new yet.
It still doesn't have responsive, low-memory browsing. That's the main advantage of Chrome to me. Even Firefox fails in that regard.

It's a pretty poor survey to say the least. I wouldn't give it more than 2 sigmas if they set me on fire. I mainly use Chrome but I also have IE9 and Firefox installed because there's always such a thing as the best one for the job. But putting together something accurate would actually involve doing a real study.

EDIT: Actually reading their paper, the study isn't quite as badly done as the article made out. However I would say their sampling system was pretty poor.

And thus, people started to argue over which internet browser is better, because everyone knows how super important that is...

Obviously not. My parents have no knowledge about technological stuff because it doesn't really interest them and for example the hardly ever use the internet, so they have no idea which browser is actually better. IE works fine so they use that, they don't care which browser is better. That doesn't have any kind of relation to the IQ.
Being intelligent and having a knowledge of something are two completely different things.

Looks like the responses from many IE users in this thread have pretty much confirmed the OP's hypothesis. ;)

But I suppose a flamey reaction should be expected to a perceived insult.

Internet Explorer isn't "installed" on every windows machine as much as it FORMS THE BASIS OF THE WHOLE FRACKING GUI WITH A DIFFERENT SKIN ON TOP!
Hell, when Microsoft got taken to court by the US Government shortly after the release of Windows 95 (yes, that friggen far back!) for default "installing" Internet Explorer in an attempt to push Netscape out of the market, Microsoft told them plain and simple that they could NOT remove the Internet Explorer code from the GUI and would have to rebuild Windows 95 from the ground up if they did when told they would have to remove it, as they used the IE kernel to drive the GUI and simply gave it a different coat of paint and name.
How very convenient for them.

It's not quite as fundamental a part of the OS as you suggest, but it is technically correct that some parts of the Windows "shell" (not kernel) depended on some modules which were claimed to be inexorably part of IE. There is no reason why this should be the case in a properly designed OS.

This once again came up when Microsoft got taken to court by the EU Government about Windows 7 coming with IE8 already woven in and Microsoft came up with the idea of the European-Only editions of Win7 having the Web Browser Installation Screen that would get (via File Transfer Protocol or FTP) an alternate browser (say, Firefox 4) and install it after the bulk of Win7 was already installed, JUST to please the EU courts so they could sell more copies of windows there.

So when you use a Windows machine (unless you're manually-building a system with a European-Only version of Win7), you get pretty much no say at all in the matter if IE is actually installed or not other than hiding the IE6/7/8/9 GUI as a choice of web browser.
Ever since it was released, Windows 7 has allowed you to easily and safely remove IE at any time without adversely impacting OS functionality, regardless of your jurisdiction.

The Browser Choice update to satisfy the EU antitrust regulators (not courts) simply made the user aware of the availability of other browsers, and offered links to their websites. No mention of FTP (as if a browser is the only kind of HTTP client that exists, sheesh).

You make out like Microsoft is the victim and the EU the bully, and that it was oh so difficult for Microsoft to decouple IE from Windows and they were really making a big concession to the EU by doing that, but the EU are a democratic institution voted for by me and my fellow Europeans; they are looking out for our rights (in between meals of lobster and caviar paid for by Steve Jobs, of course, they are politicians after all) and it was a trivial matter to add the browser choice window, Microsoft really did the bare minimum they could get away with.
Actually, I don't give a shit if Microsoft is victim to Governments (big business should be weary of those put in charge of the country By The People anyway). Gimme Mandrake-Linux, WINE and VirtualBox over Windoze Vista/7 any day.
Also, if I can completely remove IE8 from my 7-Ent test rig (the 90-day Trial is a god-send for testing and experimenting, as Enterprise is basically the same as Ultimate anyway), then why does it crash when I try do so?

Captcha: Gllz Subloons? Why are you attacking that poor Secondary Rider from AgitΩ?! You bastards! :)P)

I see no point in switching to an inferior program that does less then IE. This does not make me stupid it makes me practical.
It's the other way around sir, according to the study you'd be stupid to use IE.

OT: I use internet explorer, no problem. My IQ is also above average, so imagine how stupid the rest must be!

I'm so funny.
Go back and reread my post I know exactly what the study says and its a load of shit. When I was in college a lot of the programs and websites we had to use did not support anything other then IE. I used to laugh at how people using firefox and google chrome didnt understand it and would spend the first hour trying to figure that out. Even after the teacher told them.
Whoops, I see it now.

Haha, what a poor fucking advertising campaign. Of course, using the newest explorer there is makes you some sort of bloody genius. I don't use IE, because it's stupid, and slow, and frustrating to use, plus the probability of catching a virus is more likely than in any other explorer out there, and this is proven by the fact that I use Kaspersky AV 2012 and it has sort of like a special setting, especially made for IE, which certainly says something... Why that is, though, I think, is because most people that use IE are usually new to the internets, and therefore more vulnarable than your average PC user. But still, it kind of bugs me the way they've arranged the scores from oldest to newest(or at least to semi-newest), as if to say "if you don't keep up with every bloody explorer that comes out, you're a retard". And that's just stupid. I use Firefox, but since it was one of the first explorer's that officially came-out after IE, despite having released way newer features and updates since the first version, it's still being placed somewhere among the "retard spectrum" of this graph. It's rather offensive...
Also, this doesn't determine anything, what-so-ever. How can your explorer have any effect on your score? Or rather, how does your IQ determine the type of explorer you're using? It's non-sensical, I personally know people, who I may easily label "stupidest idiots in the world", and safely say that my IQ, however little it is (for, to be honest, I know not how little it actually is, since I've never done a legitimate IQ test, but whatever), is bigger then theirs, but they tend to download every new explorer, for reasons concerning vanity obviously, while I just stick with what's practical and familiar. And on a side-note: What the hell is Camino?! I've never even heard of this thing. I mean I know Opera and Safari, I've seen them, although I've never seen anyone actually use them, but anyway... This is just weird.

Internet Explorer is a FANTASTIC tool to download Firefox on.

I thought we all knew IQ tests to evaluate intelligence are stupid
This. I hate when people try to draw connections between the two. The IQ test was originally designed to predict a young child's future academic success (or lack there of) to help accommodate for their potential needs in the classroom. It had nothing to do with intelligence then, it has nothing to do with it now.

I use FireFox personally, but a few programs on certain websites can't be used on that browser. IE isn't great, but at least it works.

Hey. I didn't see my old browser on there, so I have no clue what to think. IE was spread throughout, so I wonder where IE 4 stands. Regardless, I don't think that browser has much impact at all. What I want to see is the variance; that might give a clue as to what is true.

Yes, my computer used to run IE 4. No, it was not my choice; that was the best that could run on it.

I'm glad I got Chrome x).
Actually it's most likely because on new computers, Internet explorer is the default browser, and only the smart people realise they should change to chrome, firefox or opera while the less able/ people who didn't realise there was a difference (like me in the past) stay on IE.
Do the test on safari, I dare you. Anyone wanting to guess the average IQ scores then ;)?

Intelligence and computer ability have nothing to do with each other. You can have a really smart person who is made nervous by computers and would obviously be to afraid to change any settings (let alone change what programs they use) without explicit direction from a computer expert.

My mom is a very smart person who has a doctorate in physics, but she still has allot to learn about computers. It wasn't until she got a brand new laptop with Windows 7 that I was able to convince her to switch to chrome, and now she loves it.

My dad knows computers allot better but he isn't allowed to install unauthorized software on his work laptop, which I believe is true of allot of businesses.
