Wow I cant believe so many people replied to my Thread, thanks everyone.

It looks like it DOES make a sound when a tree falls in the forest, even if noone is around to hear it fall.

Thanks for clearing that up. Unless someone disagrees?

No, vibrations in the air are not converted into sound until someone's ears convert it into sound.

The real question is: Why wouldn't it?
Fine, i'm not around to prove that there is sound, but, when a tree DOES fall,if I am around, I will most likely be able to hear it.
If it makes sound when i'm around, why wouldn't it when i'm not?.

Humans can hear between 20 to 20,000 hertz.
If there is something lower than 20 hertz, there might still be a vibration trough the air, even if you can't hear it.

The problem here is the subjective definition of sound.

There are many diffrent subjective opinions of sound:
"Transmitted frequencies which have been detected.".
"A vibration between 20 to 20,000 hertz."
"Transmitted vibrations of any frequency."

I'll go with the latter. It goes well with my theory.

Exactly my point. It is like saying that just beacause you cannot see the tree as well, it does not exist and the definition given states sound is "Transmitted vibrations of any frequency." showing that it makes a sound but no one hears it- duh. I have never really got this argument.

More appropriate question would be, "If a tree kills alone in the forest, does it make a sound?"
Think about it before you next time go to the forest.

I'd also like to mention that if the tree hits a mime, no-one cares.

See, the problem is people dont think before they post, everyone is saying "yes of course" but sound by definition is vibrations that someone hears.. look it up.

I did and:

Sound is a travelling wave which is an oscillation of pressure transmitted through a solid, liquid, or gas, composed of frequencies within the range of hearing and of a level sufficiently strong to be heard.

No mention that anyone has to be there, just that it has be strong enough to heard should anyone be present. If the tree falls it makes a sound, the fact that no-one was present to hear it is irrelevant, because if they had been there they would have heard the sound it made.

Vibrations in air does not equal sound. Sound is a perception of those vibrations. If there is no-one around to hear it fall, (no-one includes animals, IMO), there is no 'sound', only vibrations.
