Don't people normally flush public toilets with the door to the stall closed?
Or are you thinking of urinals?
In which case I'm guessing they'd just avoid urinals altogether.
Aerosols won't give a shit about a flimsy stall door, and the aerosol produced can last for up to two hours, and bacteria and virus aren't completely eliminated by flushing.[footnote]http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16033465[/footnote] So scratch having a particulate mask on when someone flushes, just don't go inside at all.
Perhaps, but phobias aren't about being rational.
So long as they don't feel they come into direct contact with the 'spray' itself, I'd guess they'd be fine.

I don't know anyone with that kind of phobia though, so who knows?

Rule #1: If you need something adjusted, you adjust it.
Rule #2: Look where you're peeing, like a reasonable human male.
Rule #3: Look where you're placing your exposed backside, like a rational human woman.
Rule #4: Find the bigger fish. Fry it.

Me and boyfriend decided it by who is more fucked-over if the seat is accidentally in the wrong place.

He may pee on the seat, I may break my butt.

So he puts the seat down. He hardly ever remembers but he tries to.
So you lack the use of your eyes?
Yes, that's completely my point. I have toilet-seat blindness.
Or that some people make a big deal out of something that isn't.

I get from this thread that people don't look down before they pee/sit down, what's up with that?
Fucking baffling, isn't it? I've never understood this. I've never lived with a blind person; yet it's been an issue. I now have my own bathroom, so fuck everybody. Sometimes it's up, sometimes it's down and sometimes the lid is down as well. Whatever options takes my fancy at the moment.

I do make it a point to put the seat down when I'm at a female friends house. I know they expect it to be down, because they live alone, so why would it ever be up? That's fine. I'll work with that. But when somebody visits me and bitches that the seat is up, I really can't be fucked to care.

Why would you ever leave the toilet seat up?
That is just unkempt and unsanitary.
Do you imagine you will save one second so you will have time to do the business at an emergency?
Or have you simply not discovered that it is much easier and sanitary to open it with your foot?
Or do you perhaps not have a cover seat?

If it wasn't a "big deal" then why did it ever become a topic of discussion. Toilet blindness indeed.
So, if you mention something, it's a big deal?
Jesus, I'm glad my conversations aren't as intense as yours.

I always put the lid down because
A. I'm an evil bastard and it forces others to put in some effort themselves.
B. I like to know if someone else used the toilet since I did last.
C. They can't complain because technically the seat is down.
D. I have OCD and I'm constantly imagining little molecules of water/shit/urine floating all over the room and onto my toothbrush and bath towel.
E. Prevents me from accidentally dropping something or some object randomly falling into the toilet.

I'd encourage lid usage for everybody, but I honestly like the ability to "mark my territory" with it and I get annoyed when I see that someone else has done it, too.

My life is a wild ride.

You know what I mean though, it shouldn't have even come up. Is it that much bother to do it yourself?
Nope, of course not. But the bathroom looks much tidier with seat and lid down.
It wouldn't have been a big deal if boyfriend had said `I cant be bothered`, but he said `Sure`.

I put the lid down, because I don't want my cats to go swimming in there, but if it weren't for them, I'd leave it with the seat up or down, depending on what I used it for.
Really though, closing the lid altogether has to be the best thing to do in pretty much every situation, unless you are sick and have to run in there every now and then.

No. Men can sit down to piss, and have to sit down to take a shit.

So put the seat up yourself if you have to.

Also, I've never heard of anyone complaining about the alignment of a toilet seat in 24 years of real life, by the way.

I always put both the seat & lid down, because if I have to bend over to lift them so does everyone else... but I petty like that. :p
That is my solution. It also has the added befit of not being mistaken for the seat up or down and is aesthetically more pleasing.

Lol this just reminded me of that episode of south park where Clide(I think it was Clide) forgot to put the toilet seat down so his mom ended up dunking her doughnut and then eventually died due to the toilet sucking her intestines out.

OT:In my house everyone just leaves it the way they used it.

I voted no. Men shouldn't have to lower the seat if they don't want to, if the women in their lives know how to ask nicely, I think he should do it. All the grown up girls can act like adults and lower the seat. I usually do it out of courtesy, but if I'm sternly asked to put the toilet seat down I make it a point not to. Girls seem to think they can be bitchy about this subject and get away with it. I for one will not stand for it.

i really don't get leaving the seat up, unless we are talking public/school/workplace mens room. leaving the seat up is just incredibly lazy, you also put lids over your garbage cans.
