Water and Earth are the most practical of the elements. As for which one I'd choose, I think Water suits my nature better.

Air. What was shown in the tv series is not the full extend of it's powers. How can you breath with no air? no air? no air? (is it stuck in you head yet?)
You need water, earth/metal to bend it. You are more likely to be surrounded by Air than those and fire is too bad-ass.

Tough call between water and earth. I live in a port town, so I have direct access to the sea, and there's a huge artificial pond near my apartment, so that would make for some fun times as a water bender; however, I find the fighting style earth bending is based on much more appealing, and judging from the way earth benders typically behave in the series it appears this element suits me best. I do appreciate the benefits of blood bending, but I find it endlessly creepy...

I'd take fire. If you REALLY think through the options, it might not be the best(air could certainly whoop fire's ass in a 1v1 match), but it's flashy and fun, while still having awesome capabilities.

everybody who has said "earth bending would be bad because you would destroy the area around you and leave trenches in the ground or holes in the road." while i agree buildings would sustain damage, any holes you make could be closed again quite easily and if someone brings up the argument, oh .50 cal rifle could pierce your earth wall (i know nothing of guns), well just make a hole under your feet and drop down so the bullet misses (duh)
Well, if Earthbenders can bend metal to their will as well as earth, then I see no reason for them to not bend other metals like silver, and gold, which would be very profitable and interesting.
So I'll probably be an Earthbender. If not, I'll be a Waterbender.

Air - Control over wind. I suppose it would be fun to fly around, but I imagine it would get cold.
Fire - Definately the coolest, but since we don't live in the 4th century and don't have ready access to campfires etc. there wouldn't be much of a source to manipulate.
Water - Makes up a large portion of the planets surface, but there isn't a huge amount that can be done with water...
Earth - Makes up a HUGE portion of the planet. Hence the name... Earth... Summoning spires of rock to combat the other elements? Hell yeah.

Air, mainly cause I always wanted to fly since I was young. Also apparently, it matches my personality type. You can be your own PC, if you make cold air, you can turn water to ice, and its relaxing. Also it's everywhere, so in a battle, why grab a weapon when you can just use wind?

or if your are really thirsty, just get water from the air!
and you NEVER need scissors or knives again!
