Earth, purely because everything what man uses comes from the ground. I get Earth, rock, mud, sand, metal, etc.
Well, I can't find many practical uses for metal bending. I mean honestly, how are you supposed to use metal bending in your daily life? And I mean, if you were to use earth and metal bending for wanton destructive rampages, you'd eventually get killed. There is no way that one man could ever win against an entire nation, no matter how strong that man is. One bomb and you're dead. No matter how much protection you've got. Sure, you'd be able to kill millions of people before you die, but I don't quite see the point of that.

No, I haven't been "outside" lately. I live in Los Angeles. There isn't much ground and there isn't much water in that ground either. I guess you could tap into water pipes underneath the ground, but you'd have to know where all the pipes are and you'd have to pick your fights carefully.
Suppose it's a matter of Geography, living in scotland it rains for over 40% of the year, to get a week without rain is a bloody miracle.

But yeah, even in a city water pipe run under most streets and up most walls, plus surely you would be able to sense where the water was, making it easier to find.
I still don't get the point of your argument though. I wouldn't use my firebending for killing people, only for making my life easier and for self defense. Think of bending like it's magic. It's a utility, you don't have to use it to kill people, you can use it to make your life all the more pleasant.

Water. H20 is everywhere, it's in every living creature, it's spread thinly in the air around you. There are barely any places where the air humidity is 0%, and when it's higher then 0% you can extract water from the air. If not you can just extract it from living tissue. Flowers, insects, animals, you name it.
it's next to Earth the most flexible element to bend (water walls, ice shields, fast movement, ice projecticles, you name it). But I don't need it: I can just let people explode, drain all their blood out of them. Much more effective then trying to smash them with a rock or set them on fire. Plus it's way more gruesome, and they can't defend themselfs against if. It's just POOF SPLUT dead. Awesome...*grins*

O no, as I sad, your enemy is FULL of water. Makes the fight pretty easy for a water bender.
GOD FUCKING DAMMIT! WHAT IS IT WITH YOU PEOPLE AND WANTON DESTRUCTION AND SLAUGHTER?

Who said anything about rampage and destruction? I just get to do more stuff!

I chose Fire, but would have liked Iron as a choice.

Imagine being able to remove the iron from peoples blood...

Water.

With fire, most people would just light cigarettes and make Smokey the Bear really pissed.

With Earth, most people would just create some crazy architecture.

With Air, most people would just travel, and blow up skirts.

But with Water, I can bend PEOPLE.

Yup, the problem with earth bending is the fact that you have to be in contact with it. Sure bombs and rockets are also made out of metal, but when you can touch them it's already too late.

Well as I said, it's much easier to make your enemy just go POOF in a cloud of blood, rather then to try to set them on fire (wich is slow as well). Besides, I don't see a whole lot of uses for fire in my daily live, bending water means you can make instant icecream (woot!) of perfect texture, given that you're a master water bender, and getting a drink isn't much of a hastle anymore. If it rains you can just shield yourself from the rain, no need for an umbrella. Crossing water would be a piece of cake, you can go iceskating whenever you want to. You name it, fire doesn't even come close :p

*giggles* Above are a few examples. But ofcourse, with the ability to bend people, you can do a whoooooole lot of other exciting things wich don't involve slaughter...*grins*

Earth, definitley. It'd just be so great, shooting a diagnol slice of earth at people, launching them up high.
But with water bending, you can just lift THEM up and launch them. No need to add something, all makes it more difficult and easier to defend against. Afterall, what can your hapless victim do if YOU controll him.

PS: Almost forgot, water bending gives you the power to heal (next to all the practical jokes, gory deaths and practical uses).

Never said I wanted to go on a killing spree, just that it had applications for that, much like your fire dragon.

It wouldn't be a particularly useful power, but you could (theoretically) Pressureise it enough until it is essentially solid then ride/fly on it (after shaping it in the form of a unicorn or something) Or even just for watering the garden (less useful here, but you see what i mean) showering would be instentaionous and you'd never go thirsty again.

I chose Earth, because it is abundant where I live, and I wanted a way to build a bunker in my backyard.

Iron IS a choice... Earthbenders can bend metal as well.

You kidding me? With firebending, I'd be able to create a light source whenever I want, and heat up whatever I want. I'd save so much money on heating and I'd be able to heat my coffee, tea, and soup without having to use a microwave or a stove.

Fire. I would go on a rampage destroying the entire city until someone finally takes me out. (I would of course be keeping enough fire around me to melt any bullets that should come my way)

Air, possibly the best weapon, you could just compact a lot of air into a tiny point then release to create a huge explosion, also sending people you don't like to the stratosphere, how awesome would that be.

I would be unstoppable, I could create tornadoes and vacuums wherever I wanted.

Well I got the sun and a stove for that. I never really need more light anyway, nor do I have to heat a lot of stuff. I spend more time each day manipulating fluids then I spend heating things. And don't forget: water bending has healing powahhh!

Uranium 238! then I'd have some armor piercing-
Oh wait, these are the old fashioned definitions...
Hmmmm.
Uh,
Dark Matter. It'd be awesome to bring flaming death of weird gravitational physics and x-rays and radiation!

No, Katara has healing power. Not all waterbenders can heal wounds. And I don't spend too much time around water. I don't know what I'd do with waterbending anyway. I wouldn't need it to pour liquid into a glass. Wouldn't need it to drink that liquid. Wouldn't need it in the shower or the bath. I guess you could just spend hours practicing your waterbending technique and playing with water, but the same goes with fire as well. Although waterbending is considerably more relaxed than firebending.

Your body would turn to ash way before you can make it hot enough to stop a bullet.
