Air. How can you make a fire if there is no air? How are you going to breath if there is no air? You could use air pressure to do everything you could with the other bendingstuffs and create tornadoes.

Besides at a certain temperature EVERYTHING is gas.

No, Katara has healing power. Not all waterbenders can heal wounds. And I don't spend too much time around water. I don't know what I'd do with waterbending anyway. I wouldn't need it to pour liquid into a glass. Wouldn't need it to drink that liquid. Wouldn't need it in the shower or the bath. I guess you could just spend hours practicing your waterbending technique and playing with water, but the same goes with fire as well. Although waterbending is considerably more relaxed than firebending.
I thought all master water benders had healing powers (Katara being a master bender). O well.
Water is everywhere though, in the air (air humidity), in every living creature (not only great for slaughter, also great for practical jokes, think this Rowan Atkinson sketch [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWdEUYZAPdA&feature=related], without the blowing in the ear and ofcourse the invisible man in this case being a water bender). When it rains, you don't need an umbrella, you just let the rain flow around you. Instant icecream of a perfect texture (given that you're a master bender). You don't need a glass anymore for a drink, just floop in your mouth. Plus it's not so destructive as fire, you can play a lot more with water bending. Your right about the relaxing part btw, I think that's because water bending is based on tai chi, a martial arts based on using and directing the energy of your opponent rather then strenght from yourself. It's elegant, rather then aggressive.

This is a difficult one, actually. I'm torn between earth and fire.

Fire is, in essence, chemical change, so by extension, one who knows how to bend fire really knows how to change chemical compounds and recreate substances everywhere.

Earth-bending allows metal-bending, and given the high percentage of items/buildings made today that are either made of stone or metal, this pretty much would imply a god-status.

I'm going to go with... fire, for now. Intriguingly enough, it seems like the less ostentatious of the two options.

Water, use it to create something like one of those high powered water jets that can cut through metal.

Where's heart? /joke

But I voted Earth. Crushing people in combat is my style. And riding a wave of rock would be awesome.
By your powers combined I AM CAPTAIN PLANET!!

But in all seriousness, I'd be the Avatar, because I'd control all of them!

.....But if I had to control just one, it would have to be water or fire but more than likely water because I don't like the heat.

Icy.

For real life situations, Earth. I would create architecturally advanced buildings out of metals, stone, and dirt, and subterranean fortresses, and buy off other element-benders with extremely easy-for-me-to-mine diamonds and precious metals. The money wouldn't matter so much, though, as being able to create homes, irrigate water, and shape metals/cars/tools/etc. I'm an idealistically good guy myself, so that'd be the most existentially satisfying part of my life.

For fantasy/anime, Water, and I'd live near the ocean... Come and get me! MUAHAHAHAHA!

Carbon. Certainly the most plentiful element and would be nice to bend all things flora, fauna, many things constructed and mined to my power.

I'm guessing this joke has been done already.

I love how even the results are, btw.

EDIT:

Hey, my bro called me up and told me that Avatar was legit even though it's aired on Nick, which I hate completely. Where can I watch the episodes online? Aside from the obvious choice of massive torrent downloading...

Water. It's offensive, defensive, can heal, and is just plain elegant. Plus, I love swimming and the ocean and all that stuff... water has always been my element.

(I always chose Squirtle :p)

The end gave me a good laugh; I didn't expect it to happen.

I thought about that. I mean if you send out a good enough pulse, you could rupture someone's organs and major blood vessels from the inside out.

I can't believe no one has linked this yet. [http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0423.html]

It's what I'd choose too. xD
HA. Pure win.
At least the Chinese had five elements. And Buddhists have seven.

Air bending. If you're not planning on causing damage (ie. you're living in the real world) then I think it would be perfect. It's basically flight, and would give you great agility. Good for winning races, methinks.

Possibly over nine thousand, due to the sheer epicness of his endurance.
He was going to evolve, but God pressed the B button.

I would bend Hydrogen or Carbon. True elements.

But just so I'm not a jackass, I'd say the Earth element. I could do many things with the manipulation of metal.

Earth, purely because everything what man uses comes from the ground. I get Earth, rock, mud, sand, metal, etc.
Well, I can't find many practical uses for metal bending. I mean honestly, how are you supposed to use metal bending in your daily life? And I mean, if you were to use earth and metal bending for wanton destructive rampages, you'd eventually get killed. There is no way that one man could ever win against an entire nation, no matter how strong that man is. One bomb and you're dead. No matter how much protection you've got. Sure, you'd be able to kill millions of people before you die, but I don't quite see the point of that.
I'm pretty sure there are conditions where manipulating metal would be useful, busted pipe maybe?

I know I don't want air, fire isn't really that useful except in a fight but the other elements are more than sufficient, so either earth or water......

Earth, it seems to be more destructive and more defensive and there has to be someone who'd pay for destruction. If you learn to metal bend even better.

As for water, I love to swim, meaning I'm completely submerged in something I'd control.
