Water. It's offensive, defensive, can heal, and is just plain elegant. Plus, I love swimming and the ocean and all that stuff... water has always been my element.

(I always chose Squirtle :p)
No, Water can't heal. Only a few waterbenders can actually heal.

Air without it you just die
Fire eats up oxygen. You can trap someone in a vortex of flames and suffocate them. You can make the vortex hot enough and large enough to melt bullets as well. Or you can just incinerate them instantly with bursts of fire or lightning.

i dont really understand fire, earth is all around us as is water and air but fire isnt there unless you light a flame , if there was a forrest fire i suppose you could make the flames go down?
heat bending would be useful
Firebenders make fire, not just bend it. A firebender is never without something to bend. He can shoot fire from his hands, feet, mouth, he can create and indefinitely sustain a flame in the palm of his hand, he can even create a fire dragon and make it soar through the air.

Earth. Build things, shape jewelry, compact hydrocrabons into oil. the words "Stinkin' rich" spring to mind, plus all the charity work from erecting natural shelters and shizz in developing nations. Transport would be a tad less subtle that air, but subtely went to hell when I started manifesting thrones everytime I wanted to sit down.

Which means water can heal. That's pretty much all they taught the women to do in the Northern Water tribe (before Katara).

As a side note, I'm amused by how close the poll options are.

Why has fire got the most? It's completely useless! You could burn somebody's face off with a lighter but that's about it. Fire is rarer than any other element and sucks! Anyway, I expected this to be PERIODIC TABLE stuff. Ah well... Oh yeah I chose water. It would be fun to control peoples drinks!

water. Water is everywhere, you can make a small ammount of it by simply sweating or spitting. That and you could turn someone into an ice-cube.

also: earth bending is pretty cool, with the shielding and metal-bending and stuf

Fire, because i'm a pyromaniac. Either that or earth, seeing the look on the face of the Russian tank commander as his tank gets impaled by the earth would be priceless.

This is the first sensible post I've seen.

I'd go with earth, just because then I could build my own awesome house out of rock. Like a freaking castle. I could fix the pot-holes on my street, since they are freaking terrible. I'd also re-pave my driveway with some cool design...like me giving a thumbs up, or a picture of a squished stick-man. I could start my own house/castle construction company, making butt loads of money by undercutting everyone else. Then, I could even be a saint by heading to places where people have no, or very small, homes and say: Ok! Basic hut for everyone! No more living in a sheet-metal shack! Hooray!

Then I'd win over the hearts of the populace and they'd elect me president.
I just got my own country! Without killing people!
Awesome.

Earth or water. I'd want to be able to help the earth grow. Aiding secondary succession would be excellent. You have no idea how many hummers I would destroy through overgrowing them to the point that they're undriveable. Of course I'd want to do bigger things with my newfound power than that, but I would certainly take solace in those little things as well.
I guess I could also use my powers to protect people from all the assholes who chose their power based on destructive merits.

You can't master all the elements. Only the Avatar can do that. Remember, this is from the show. Not from mythology per se.

As I've explained more times than I care to count, Firebenders can create and bend fire, not just bend it. A firebender can shoot fire from hands, feet, and mouth. He can create massive fire dragons and make them soar through the air, he can make flame vortexes, and he can even fly by firing concentrated jets of flames from his hands and feet. Kinda like iron man. And the freezing air would never be a problem. Firebenders can't freeze, ever, at least not if they're well trained enough. And I just love the idea of being able to heat my tea by just holding it in my hands. And I'm a bit of a pyromaniac so I'd love to just play with fire (in a safe area, of course).

fire isn't an element, it's a chemical reaction, but i'd choose carbon, i'd be able to manipulate pretty much everything

No, Fire IS an element. According to the Hindu system, which is what "Avatar: The Last Airbender" uses. Click on the links for each element in my original post, they'll show you exactly what each type of bending is.

Awesome.
Yea, I thought about making craploads of money by creating houses, tunnels, roads, fortresses, and mining rare minerals. I also thought about being able to "fly" through the water faster than any submarine in existence. Being able to go down to the deepest darkest depths of the ocean without the pressure ever affecting me. I thought about being able to jump really high and move really fast too, but then I thought about being able to heat a cup of tea or a bowl of ramen by just holding it. I thought about how much money I'd be able to save on heating, thought about being able to cook without a stove, to be able to fly in an even cooler way than with airbending (shooting jets of flame from my fists and feet), and then I thought about how awesome it would be in combat. I dunno what it is about fire, but for some reason, all the other elements just pale in comparison, no matter how awesome they really are.

Fire because the laws of thermodynamics say that if I can make fire then I can make ice.....

therefore I'd be unstopable, how can you bend air if i can condense it? how can you bend water if I can evaporate it? How can you bend earth if I can melt it?

fire = win

I think people need to first relaise there are rules to this. The topic is based off of Avatar: The Last Air Bender serise which does have a finite amount you can do with each element. Some of the things stated in this thread have been grossley taken out of preportion. So here's a crash course:

1. You need spiritual energy, or chi, to bend elements. This is non-negotiable. You also need to consider that most people have trouble tapping into their chi, which does require a good deal of training to achieve. Think monestary of shao-lin monks. So that would be a good deal of your life dedicated to learning how to bend.

2. Less than 1% of the characters in Avatar know how to achieve complciated bending techniques like metal bending, blood bending, lightning bending, blue flames, etc etc. Think of it in terms of animes such as Naruto or Bleach. You have two factors that determine your capability to bend: the amount of chi you have and your dexterity (for lack of a better term) in manipulating it. Large amounts of chi are used to bend things like metal (because of the large disassosiation with earth) where as bloodbending requires someone to manipulate every molecule in a person's body at the same time on a microscopic level. To say that anyone in this thread would achieve such feats (especially since this is about everyday practical use) is very unlikely.

3. Every bending technique is tied into a style of martial arts: Earth-Hung Gar, Fire-Northern Shaolin, Water-Tai Chi, Air-Ba Gua. Obviously this means that each has a philosophy behind them. As best demonstrated in Ang's (the main character/Avatar/last air bender) training with Toph (Earth bender), Ang had a lot of difficulty bending earth simply because his mind couldn't buy into the philosophies of earth bending (standing your ground versus freedom of movement). Then there are the kata (movements) associated with each element of bending, which are used to make chi flow to the proper points. To say that you could simply create fire in the palm of your hand just doesn't work as you need to focus your chi through these kata. This, of course, does not include very minute bending techniques (such as boiling a cup of water). Essentially, you must believe the philosophies of each bending technique and know the proper kata to perform any major sort of bending, such as shooting fireballs, creating tidal waves, moving large amounts of earth and flying.

Taking these points into consideration, as well as the general topic of conversation, I would choose water. My choice begins with my love for the philosophies behind the bending: flexibilty and fluidity. The tendancy to redirect confrontation rather than create it is something I enjoy more than, say, air Bending which is to simply avoid it. I also live near oceans so the resource is plentiful where I live. I'm also prone to carrying around a water bottle and it has been shown that wtaer is easiest to gather when you already have some being bent. The practical uses are almost endless. I could water my flowers, I always have a CLEAN source of water to drink (as will anyone else with me), I can create a cool environment in the summer (I enjoy the cold), I can make sure any minor injury I sustain is clean of infections or poisons, I'll never need a jacket in the rain, I can put out fires, I can walk over large bodies of water, I could always have a food supply if near a river/stream/lake with fish in it to catch: the list is almost endless.
