I would definitely learn Japanese. In fact I will be starting to take course on it this coming spring. Not only do I like the language, but I want to do academic work on the Imperial Japanese Navy, which obviously means that I have to be able to read their documents and the like.
I would also like to learn Chinese out of interest and for academic work as well (First and Second Sino-Japanese Wars anyone?).

Japanese, to be sure. It'd be way helpful in gaming. There are a lot of nice games that don't get released outside their borders.
I'm already on my way to learning German. Which could also be useful if I ever go to Gamescom or something. But I just like the language.

Japanese, I'd like to visit some of the older cities in Japan for a culture trip but I have a crippling fear of language barriers...
I'm so very tired of walking past a group of people, them saying something in Spanish, and laughing. I know it's extremely unlikely that they've even noticed me, much less decided to say things about me. But paranoia doesn't allow me to forget that they might be doing just that.

I'm going with Japanese, because a lot of cool stuff comes from Japan, and learning the language could help me appreciate it more.

I can kinda speak english and i have given up on writing it (to many words sound the same and are spelt different there their fair fare hare hair for example)

Quoted for truth. I had a discussion about this with a few people from my anime club; nearly all of them would want to speak Japanese. Despite its influence in technology, Japan is fairly small, so unless you had a job working with Japanese companies or corporations, it's really impractical and difficult to learn. Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world, and being one of the Romantic languages based in the English alphabet would make it easier to learn similar languages like French and Italian.Fappy said:

I'm torn, really. Realistically, the only non-English language I've found to be useful is Spanish, which I can speak and understand to some degree. I'm not fluent by any definition, but I know enough that I could get by with a few stumbles along the way. That said, it's hardly my favorite language of the ones I've encountered. Phonetically, I'm rather fond of Italian and Japanese, so both are naturally among my top choices. Then there's another part of me that wants to learn ASL for no other reason than I feel it would be interesting to know. That said, considering I don't know anybody who's deaf, I'd imagine I'd never actually have cause to use it, which tempers my desire to learn it a little. All the same, I find it hard to choose between those three languages.
Either Mandarin, or Spanish, due to the sheer number of speakers. Mandarin probably edging it out for the Learn for Free card, as my rudimentary knowledge of French and Latin would make Spanish easier.
English simply hasn't had a major spelling overhaul for the last 700 years or so. It's always an interesting contrast to my native language, Dutch, which has a habit of having official spelling overhauls with alarming regularity - right up to the point where major newspapers got tired of it, and made their own guidelines.JaceArveduin said:

I wouldn't make the mistake of learning a language nobody around me speaks, it really limits your ability to practice and gain better fluency. I'd like to learn Cantonese at some point, since I already studied Mandarin Chinese so it wouldn't be that far of a jump. Plus, from the few phrases I know, it's really fun to speak.
I also wish I spoke German and Spanish better, I'm really rusty at them (especially Spanish) because I haven't actually had to use them in years.
