How come the "Dune" universe created by the brilliant Frank Herbert isn't on this poll?
Bene Gesserit, Freemen, Mentats, Shai Hulud, the Tleilaxu, gholas, the Honored Matres... Now *there's* a complex and extremely rich world.
There are only 8 slots man give me a break.
No worries, I know it's though to pick only 8 options out of the myriad available. It just seems like a bit of an oversight: the Dune universe has been around for over 40 years, whereas Firefly and Mass Effect are still in their infancy. Don't get me wrong, I love the Mass Effect universe to bits, and I've nothing against the Firefly universe. They just seem less significant than the Dune universe in the sense that it has been incredibly resilient (some scifi doesn't withstand the advancing years), and it's a great deal more complex: it tackles politics, religion, ecology, technology and human emotion all at once, and perehaps there's even a bit of philosophy in there too. What other sci-fi universe does that? The Foundation series by Isaac Asimov, perhaps (and those are missing from the list as well ;) ). Don't get me wrong, this isn't too start to "vs" argument, I'm just defending one of my all-time favorite authors. =)

And it's not "man", that's "Lady", to you!
What would win in a fight a star destroyer or the USS Enterprise?

MUAHAHAHAHAHA

Mass Effect. Provided I'm on Earth or a nice part of the Citadel, and not on a vulnerable colony in the Traverse nor on the cesspool that is Omega.

I find it interesting that most of the choices offered seemed like they would total shit to live in, what with the constant war going on. Sure, they would be great if your were cast as hero, but pretty much any life would at that point, unless Hideaki Anno is writing your life. It seems a case of either laziness or lack of imagination with regards to sources of dramatic tension. With that being said, I choose the world of Cory Doctorow's 'Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom". A post-scarcity society where death is an inconvenience, and people are judged based on their total contribution to society.

I fail to see how that's related to my post, but sure, I'll play!
The Trekkie in me says USS Enterprise, but the realist in me says that size and firepower *does* matter, so the Star destroyer would win (it's 4 times as long as the USS Enterprise, although I'm not sure exactly what the weapons specs of either ships are).

I would say Firefly because I fucking love that show, but... Reavers... just Reavers. Ah, hell with it, I'd live in Firefly's universe anyway, as long as I got to fly with Mal, or a similar crew.

I'm thinking Mass Effect...But there are still those damn Reapers.
Every universe has it's big bad.
True, but some big bads are so much worse than others. I can't think of anything worse than Firefly's Reavers.

"If they take the ship, they'll rape us to death, eat our flesh, and sew our skins into their clothing. And, if we're very, very lucky, they'll do it in that order."

Not to mention they're brutally insane, have no fear, and feel no pain (or are so insane they don't care, I was never quite sure).

I said Firefly. However, the two other choices that I would make is Lensman or Doctor Who. Heck, since I went old-school with Lensman. I should probably add Dune or Foundation -- preferably Foundation over Dune.
