Really, you'd cancel your pre-order over this? That's rather petty.
To be fair, I haven't played CoD much, but one of the primary reasons I've heard people complain about it's multiplayer (outside the usual complaints of balance and such) was the lack of dedicated servers. To include them, only to disable leveling on them seems rather silly and pointless. Actually, I can't see much reasoning in it outside giving the people who wanted dedicated servers the middle finger.

But hey, I'm a Battlefield fan and won't be buying or coming near MW3's multiplayer in the first place, so just my 2 cents.

Though this begs the question: Are you playing the game because it's fun or because you like getting experience points?
I play the game because it's fun. With friends. The matchmaking system does not work well with this. If we all want to play together with the settings we like we can't rank up, if we can't rank up we're stuck with the base weapons unless we delve into the horrible mess that is IWNet.

Consider it like this.

You have a group of friends and you all want to go out drinking.

You can all join up before hand, buy some booze and chill at home, it's good but not quite the same.

Or you can all jump on the train together, get off somewhere and drink with whoever you've found. But lo and behold, there are cunts everywhere and you can't do anythign to clear them out.

But now consider, you have a local boozer. You all go down there, you know everyone in there and they're all nice people. Dickheads come in, the landlord chucks them out. Everyone has a wonderful time.

This is how dedicated servers used to be.

But now, it's all the same, only the local boozer is only serving soft drinks. It defeats the point.

Today I discovered that the dedicated servers promised to PC gamers for MW3 have not been what everyone expected. Dedicated servers will be unranked only. This means that if you wish to level up and make any kind of progress you have to use IWNet, the matchmaking service introduced in MW2.

THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE.

The reason most of us wanted Dedicated servers is so that we can enjoy the game with a regular group of people, in a low ping environment, with the settings how we like them. While it's true that you can still do this, it's a moot point because you make NO PROGRESS while doing this. I don't want to have to play with a bunch of random people I don't know, across someone's inevitably terrible broadband connection, with no admins, just so I can level up.

So PC gamers, I ask you, Will you be getting MW3 in light of this news?

I for one, will be cancelling my pre-order if this doesn't change.
Good for you. I for one will buy it, mainly because I enjoyed the last few games.

Why did you make a post about this? Just to say that you aren't getting it? I am confused.
Don't be confused.

You see it has apparently become the norm on this site for every whiney person and their whiney dog to create a thread whenever they see or hear something they don't like regarding a game, usually ending with a declaration of them not buying said game.

They continue to do this even though nobody cares.

You'll get used it it.

Are you f*cking kidding us?

There is no way that Infinity Ward can allow dedicated servers run by players to be ranked.

Dedicated servers exist to provide fun and entertainment for people who want to play the game that way. Dedicated servers can allow special rules and mods to run, meaning that the rules of the game changes (similar to all of the popular mods that exists for Counter-Strike, like the Warcraft 3 TFT Hero mod), and it also means that things like dealing with cheaters is out of IW's hands. Did you seriously, and in all honesty, expect that to be ranked?

It's not unacceptable. In fact, not only is it perfectly acceptable, it's the only logical way to do this as long as they insist on having that particular ranking system in the game.

I posted this for two reasons.

A) to inform those who didn't know about the latest IW arse pull.
B) to vent my frustration.

I had a quick browse and didn't notice any threads about it so I thought I might as well post.

No, I am not kidding. It worked for CoD 4, it worked for WaW, why shouldn't it continue to work? PunkBuster worked fine at dealing with cheaters in those games, as did accurate wielding of the banhammer.

I'm just curious where did you hear there weren't going to be ranked dedicated servers? I managed to find a couple of articles that said it might not have dedicated ranked servers but nothing definitive.

At the very least you'd be able to (I assume and hope) party up with people on IWnet. I hated not being able to play with friends in servers in Blops. MW2 in that regard was a lot more fun, and the experience in terms of connection issues wasn't a massive issue although at times it was a pain.

Are you sure we're playing the same game?

I saw my share of cheaters in CoD 4. It's just like it has always been, cheaters are always one step ahead of the system (except on consoles until someone broke them). If a cheater stays on top and cheats the system (and they do), that leaves it to the individual server operators to spot and eliminate them. Not only is cheaters much harder to spot in games like CoD compared to Counter-Strike because of their increased complexity, but you put way too much trust in this so called 'accurate' wielding of the banhammer. You see, when running a dedicated server, noone enforces you to use the banhammer as a server administrator. You can, but you don't have to. Therefore, this so called 'accurate' wielding isn't always going to be so accurate, and even if it is, the cheaters can just find another dedicated server and the problem persists.

And then we move on to server-side mods like i mentioned, which can also easily be classified as cheating, although it's permitted. The ranking system simply can't be allowed to run on a dedicated server, because server administrators can run ANYTHING they desire on a dedicated server in any way they want. They can make it so you respawn faster in maps (quick death-match style game mode) = Faster experience. They can make it so it's a superpowers server which saves your superpowers = Once you've played enough on the server, you have an advantage in everything you do compared to most other people = easier experience.

In short: No, it's not going to work.

-

But you know what confuses me the most? That you find it unacceptable, even IF it was going to work.

You see, noone forces you to play on dedicated servers (or on servers that use the ranking system). You are free to choose. If you think the ranking system rocks, then just go play on a normal server. It's not really going to hurt your gameplay. If you would want to have fun on a dedicated server, then that's also entirely up to you. And the best part is that you can switch between the two whenever you like. It's not like selecting A prevents you from switching to B later or back.

You are essentially being given WAY more freedom in MW3 than in previous installments of the series, and you choose to complain about it. Some people just can't be satisfied i guess....

Eherm, I Think this is Great. Dedicated servers are bland and boring. It'l prevent millions of servers just on the same map for 247! Im Happy they have got rid of shitty dedicated servers!
(Assuming you're not being sarcastic...)

If you don't know what you're talking about, its probably best not to describe something as "great".

Remember when a bunch of people signed a petition to get IW to get dedicated PC servers for MW2? That did nothing either. I'm converting to Xbox. Not that it will make a difference finding dedicated servers but because I can avoid hackers a hell of a lot more than on the PC.
I may just do that, otherwise I won't be getting on PC.

You say that like it hasn't happened in previous games.
It was never a good idea to begin with, and time has not sweetened it.

We had dedicated servers for the 15 years before match making showed up, I think we can handle it.

I don't see a huge issue with this - if they allowed leveling on dedicated servers, then it would be a huge amount of extra effort on their part to make sure the dedicated server owners aren't able to abuse the leveling system for their players.

I'd say the fact that they're actually letting dedicated servers happen this time around is good news.

you do understand why they did this? It would be like if console gamers could gain experience through private matches. If you can alter the settings of a match then you have an unfair advantage and it makes boosting so easy. not to say you will boost, but i think after the crapton of "MW2 isn't balanced" claims, It seems like they are trying to appeal to every audience and every opinion. They are screwed no matter what they do because SOMEONE will not like the choice they make. This just seems like something very insignificant to boycott a game for. If you want to play with friends on a dedicated server, you can, but you have to use matchmaking to level up. That seems fair to me. If you enjoy the MW series enough to want to buy it then just buy it and enjoy it. You aren't going to like everything about the game and as soon as you accept that you will probably enjoy the game alot more by reducing your expectations from "this game needs to have everything i want" to "There are things i like and things i don't like, but i'll just focus on the positives of this game and enjoy it for what it is." I'm not trying to be insulting or condescending, it's just if you always expect a game to have everything you want, it can never live up to it and you will be disappointed with every game you play. That's just my opinion though so take it for what it is. Holy crap that went way longer than i wanted... sorry lol

This seems like a fine idea. Like someone said above you don't get XP through private matches on the 360 or PS3.

I know one of the biggest exploits/mods for CoD has been insta-leveling lobbies. It won't stop cheating completely, nothing will, but this seems like a good way to let people have the dedicated servers and all the benfits that come with them while reducing the possible exploitation that they can bring to a system like CoD's as well.

I won't be personally buying MW3, it's one of the games my dad plays so he'll get it.
I also play on Xbox so I 'put up' with this terrible crime against humanity every time I try to play CoD.
Oh, wait, that wasn't so bad. I've sunk a few hundred hours into CoD and hardly notice any problems. Huh, well. This is awkward.
