Come to Louisiana and tell me how cute our cockroaches are. Especially after they faced the wrath of my tennis shoe.

There's this Belgian artist, Jan Fabre, who sometimes makes art with bugs.
He even got to decorate one of the rooms in the Belgian royal palace with dung-beetles.
The result is quite beautiful, although you're looking at a ceiling with dead beetles glued to it. There's a picture of it on his wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_fabre

Edit: More of his work: a statue in from of the universities library in Leuven, Belgium (where I live) A giant beetle pinned on a giant needle: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ladeuzeplein.jpg

Tarantula's are awesome really, feel like 8 legged hamsters. They're not cuddly or something, but very soft. It's the small one's, the spicky one's, like that AWFULL clockspider who scare the living daylights outa me.

I used to keep a pet funnel weaver (Hololena hola, I think) then a pet black widow. (L. hesperus)

I now have a terrarium with an ant colony (Camponotus festinatus) and am working on starting a leafcutter colony in the summer (Acromyrmex versicolor.) 'Nuff said.

I think my fear of spiders stemed from my brothers pet Tarantula. Well it at least made it worse. It escaped from its cage, but we could never find it. Made me paranoid for weeks.

The following is a bug. No, it isn't a shock image or crap like that, but it is simple a pic of a scarab beetle, looking into the camera. It is behind a spoiler tag because I am aware some of the folks here have a serious aversion to insects. I found the thing just adorable.

It kinda looks like it's smiling. Does anyone else find that just lovely?

Big spider here, Colbalt blue tarantula...

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a208/Gorzakk/Animals/cobaltbluetarantula.jpg[img]
...I can't fail to be impressed by that animal. It looks so different and otherworldly somehow.

General question - does anyone find some of our littler cousins of the animal kingdom (who happen to have 6 or 10 legs) beautiful, or cute?
So beautiful! Insects can be amazingly pretty, some can be downright terrifying. I love beetles. I wouldn't call most bugs "cute" however there are exceptions like that beetle you posted and caterpillars. (My boyfriend, however, hates caterpillars.)

I'm very strange about bugs, either I love them and yell at people who try to hurt them (if you even so much as look at a spider funny I will scream at you) and others freak me out and I make someone move them (never kill them, I'm a big fan of the cup and cardboard technique) Like house centipedes, I hate those things so much!!! AAAH!!!! Just look at them:

[IMG]http://img260.imageshack.us/img260/7326/housecentipede.jpg [http://img260.imageshack.us/my.php?image=housecentipede.jpg]

I get the creeps just from looking at their picture! *shivers*

Also ever since I was little I've been deathly afraid of cicadas and cicada killers (those enormous wasps that eat cicadas) When I was little I stepped on one and it wasn't dead so it grabbed onto my foot and made a noise before it crunched. Ever since then I dread late August when they all drop off the trees and die. When they're in their shell state I can handle them much better than when the are winged. And no, I don't like cicada killers even though we are on the same side, mostly because they are ENORMOUS FUCKING WASPS WITH RED EYES!!!!

But, bugs I like, like I said I love beetles and butterflies and moths. I really like owl eye moths even though I know they freak a lot of people out ("death's head moth" and all that; one of the few things the manga character Battle Angel Alita is scared of.) Swallowtail butterflies are my favorite.

Swallowtail (we had one that hung out on our butterfly bush that only had one tail, I always wondered whether it was a freak or if it had it bitten off) Personally I like the black ones best.

I also like spiders (yes, I know they aren't "bugs") and praying mantises and lady bugs.

On the subject of "cute"

There are quite a few pretty insects. Doesn't mean I want them near me. Anything with more than 8 legs should die in fire though.

Holy crap, that tarantula is psychadelic. I thought it was an inverted image but apparently it's real. Awesome. The spoiler didn't work, though, I had to copy and paste the link.
I think some bugs are cute. Like grasshoppers. But I don't find crickets and cockroaches to be cute. They gross me out. I don't step on them, though, I always catch them and let them out of the house. I don't like dead cockroaches.
Some bugs look awesome, like praying mantids and scorpions, although praying mantids are fun and scorpions are dangerous.

I just don't like bugs plaguing my house because they leave corpses all over the place and I don't want them getting into stuff.

Some beetles can be cute. You get these very round beetles with really big feet and shiny blue shells that walk across footpaths in summer where I live. I call them feetle beetles and I always pick them up and put them on the other side of the path so they don't get squashed.

I think this is it.
