I'm an American living abroad in a country where DVDs, CDs and other media cost at least twice as much as in the US. I'm trying my best to learn the local language, but I still need those things for my sanity. Piracy is pretty much essential in my situation to know what in the hell anyone back at home is talking about. But I still don't do it a lot. I'm mostly either playing video games or out and about actually exploring the country, and even when I'm watching stuff like movies and TV shows, I'm watching subbed versions of local programming, and that's what I mostly pirate. Usually I do delete stuff right after I watch it too, though.

As to whether or not I think it's wrong, to me it depends on the media. I can see where it can be wrong mostly with music. There are such things as the iTunes store, Last.fm and so on, where you can purchase the songs you want for a reasonable price, and in many cases, less than a hard copy. You can still make a hard copy from it as a backup. In my mind, there's not much of an excuse to pirate music, and I have only done so when I really could not find a way to listen to it legally when I wanted. I don't pirate books at all. Never have, never will. That's what things like libraries and Amazon are for. If you can't find a book you want at a reasonable cost, you're just not looking hard enough, or you're probably not going to find a way to pirate it either. Most often I pirate movies and TV shows, and especially with TV, I can see a bit more justification for it. I mean, what is taping a show to watch later, but a sanctioned version of piracy? You have the luxury of fast-forwarding through the advertisements so that you don't have to watch them, and you get to keep the copy forever to watch when you want. Just like a pirated TV show. So that copy you got off the internet didn't come straight from the original broadcast, you're still watching it as if you had taped it for later. I really have to hand it to the creators of many Comedy Central shows for understanding this and offering people the opportunity to view their shows on their websites after they air. It's a bold step that I think will eventually become the future. As for movies, I avoid pirating taped movies in the theater because I do believe that is 100 percent wrong. If you want to see a movie, go to the theater and support it. If it won't come to your theater until second run, oh well, you'll just have to wait. Life goes on if you can't see it in its first weekend. With DVDs, though, I have only pirated movies if I could not rent them, and that's only been while I am here abroad. I can't drive here, there's no rental shops within walking distance, and services such as Netflix and XBox movies aren't supported here. It's really the only way I can see those movies without having to buy the DVD at a ridiculously high price. I only pirate movies out of necessity, and delete them right away afterwards.

I will stop when I leave this country back to the US, where it will be easier to watch what I want to watch legally at a reasonable price.

Never.

Nothing.

Very much so.

Nothing. It's a matter of law and principle. Just because a company is unfair to their customers or releases media I wouldn't want to pay for doesn't make it right to steal from them.

How often do "they" pirate stuff
sometimes.

What kind of stuff do "they" download?
Mostly movies, TV shows. Some music.
Do "they" think its wrong?
No (see reasons below)
What would have to happen to make "them" stop?
Proper distribution channels for normal prices. "They" almost stopped downloading music because there is iTunes and Amazon, "they" only download what "they" can't get on there. ?7 - ?10 for an album is an okay price, but ?20 - ?40 (retail) is not.
For movies and TV shows, these need to be made available to own for normal prices. "They" simply cannot get most films and TV series here unless "they" import them for hard cash, and would very much prefer a digital copy anyway. Same price point as music albums applies: "They"'d gladly pay ~?15 for a movie or ?20 for a series, ?1 for individual episodes, but not more. It also needs to be DRM free so "they" can copy it to all "their" devices and watch wherever "they" want.
Or make you pirate more?
More DRM and restrictions, more price hikes. The less attractive the legal option, the more likely "they"'ll use what is available and compatible instead.

Fortunately downloading movies/TV/music is legal where "they" live (Netherlands). Only downloading software isn't, which "they" don't do anyway. There is no real excuse for that.

Sometimes.

Mostly movies that I want to own on dvd. I buy my games and stuff, that way if something goes wrong, I can get official help, sometimes even from people who know what their doing. Oh, and music, but that's because how the hell else am I supposed to listen to my obscure k-rock and J-jazz? import for hundreds of dollars? Hello! Economy in a slump here!

Yes, generally I think it's wrong. Under certain circumstances, no, but.... I feel bad when I pillage someone else's booty.....wow that pirate wording sounded wrong.

Being caught and sued so much that I go broke and have to live in a cardboard box.

....not being able to afford to buy the stuff normally?

I've downloaded some old game ROMs occasionally, but not very often. Oh, and I have started downloading a lot of comics. Most of my pirating is of stuff I already own and I am just relocating onto a hard drive. Rereading old comics that I didn't bring to college with me or replaying a game from the SNES. I think some pirating is ok, but some is not. It is a situational thing.
What would get me to stop? Well, as far as comics go, it would take the actual comic industry to care for me to stop. They for the most part are fine with comic scans because they know they release more comics in one week than any sane person can buy, let alone will. I for the most part spend a fare share on comics on a monthly basis that the two titans of the comic industry would not come after me.
As far as the games I download, it would take the companies rereleasing the games to some fantastic new degree that I would just have to buy the remake for me to stop downloading them. Some how, I doubt Capcom is losing money off of that copy of Megaman X I just downloaded (especially since I bought Megaman X Collection).

Things I already own or things that I can not find for an even halfway decent price (though this is rare, and I mean like $100+ USD for a dvd or something, at which point I usually decide it isn't worth the risk).
Yes, I don't like to steal things.
Getting caught and either warned or punished.
Ever-stupider DRM or higher costs for CD's. Even then I don't think I would.

I prefer to have physical copies of the things I buy, even if I get them cheap on an auction site or something. I like actually having something in hand that I feel like I earned and can always enjoy. The exception to that is digital copies of games and things I used to own but have since lost for whatever reason.
Example: I once owned several albums by a single artist and they were stolen from my car, I feel like I should be able to re-download something I've already bought. Though I guess the tricky part comes in proving that, doesn't it?
Hope your exam goes well, mate.

What kind of stuff do you download? Mostly music. Occasionally PC games if I want to make sure they run well before buying.
Do you think its wrong? Somewhat. Doesn't stop me though. I fund artists by going to gigs and buying merch. I also try and make an effort to pay for albums with which smaller artists can actually make a decent percentage, or all of the money.
What would have to happen to make you stop? Better profits for artists, fairer retail prices, possibly draconian internet cutoffs.
Or make you pirate more? Increasing DRM on PC games. Fortunately it's not much of a problem for me. Most PC games I purchase tend to use only Steamworks, which I have no problem with.

What kind of stuff do you download? All kinds of stuff.
Do you think it's wrong? Yes, unless my only other option is stalking eBay for weeks.
What would have to happen to make you stop? I had a nightmarish experience with a game crack.
Or make you pirate more? The increasingly frustrating DRM that comes with PC games.

I used to download hundreds of megabytes of data, most of which was legal or I used to make decisions on purchases. When I first started downloading music I did it so I could have it in an MP3 format, because at the time I didn't know how to rip CDs. Sometimes I still download soundtrack rips from games. I also used to download episodes of various shows I watched, but none of which had been released to DVD or VHS format. The vast majority of games I downloaded were so old that they weren't sold anymore.

But there was one game that I could've gone out and purchased used, but I didn't. But the game's no CD crack left a bad taste in my mouth. It didn't harm my computer, it was simply something the programmer hadn't though of that drove me insane.

I might make a thread about it sometime if I'm not brutally beaten for pirating the game in the first place.

What kind of stuff do you download? - Video, music and games. Mostly stuff I can't get through legitimate means, such as videos that you can't find in stores (such as episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000 that aren't included in the DVD bundles). Sometimes I "pirate" copies of DVDs I already own because I'm a video editor and I want to use something from said DVD, but don't have a program to convert the DVD to a video file.

Do you think its wrong? - To a degree; I'd like to purchase the things I pirate if they were available for purchase or set at a reasonable price. Example: I want a single song from an album in iTunes, but it's a locked "album only" track. It's not fair to make someone pay $10 if they only want the one song. Also, MST3K: The volumes put the episodes out of order, and paying $50 for 4 episodes from a 12-season show will break my bank account. :-(

What would have to happen to make you stop? - As I said, it needs to be made available for purchase, at a reasonable price. I don't like the idea of denying someone their fair pay, but if there's not a system in place that allows me to pay I have no choice but to resort to dwonloads and torrents.

Or make you pirate more? - Increasingly restrictive DRM. If I'm going to be treated like a criminal, I see no reason to give them my money. I love Steam, but stuff like the Assassin's Creed 2 debacle pisses me off to no end. (Though I try not to pirate anymore, only when I need something that can't be obtained by normal means).

What kind of stuff do you download? TV Shows / Movies (Ones that are in English but get dubbed over in my country), Games for extended trials.

Do you think its wrong? Not really, I pretty much have no legit way to watch American TV where I am, various sites/ hulu block foreign connections, why should I have to wait a year for the season to come out on DVD. Movies, I have a mild grasp of the local language why would I sit in a theater for a movie I cannot understand. If I like the game I go out and buy it, if not I uninstall and delete the files.

What would have to happen to make you stop? Access for foreign IPs to watch American TV like you could in the states. I don't think there really is a solution to the movie bit. Better/longer trials for games or trials in games that have none.

Or make you pirate more? Don't think anything would make me pirate more besides a much better internet connection (56k hurts).

I generally just download episodes of things that either aren't on T.V. or that I've missed for whatever reason. For example I was busy last Friday and missed the episode of Lost so I downloaded it to watch on Ssaturday.

I make every attempt to pay for the things I use, but sometimes there is no legitimate way to obtain things. In those cases, I don't feel very bad about pirating the thing I wanted. If anyone ever called me on it, I would happily pay.

I used to own a software company, and as such most of the money I have came by being paid for intellectual property rights (IPR). I was always opposed to copy protection schemes for most of the usual reasons. Mostly, I didn't want to inconvenience every one of my legit customers out of fear of cheats. I could not count the number of times I could not make legit use of something due to copy protection.

I was also pretty sure our first product wouldn't have been nearly as big a hit if there hadn't been some informal shareware going on -- one guy makes a copy from his friend when he needs it, later buys when the product is upgraded. He has confidence the product is worth it.

So, I believe in IPR, but some people won't buy because they are too cheap, some because they really can't. Neither seems worth going after. The real cheats? Well, I was in no rush to chase them, I was too busy raking in money. I retired at age 46.

I am doing a 8 minute presentation for an exam and I want to throw in some research.
mmmm I hope you show both sides of the argument and not the 1 copy 1 lost sale myth....

How often do you pirate stuff, Never, sometimes, alot or everthing.
I download what I can and buy what I like when I can.I notice you did not ask people if they bother to buy media.... I also buy used 90% of the time so me downloading is not really effecting anything other than keeping me out of the pits a creative mind tends to fall into.

What kind of stuff do you download?
Anime, games,TV shows random moives I think I can stand to watch, rarely will do music.

Do you think its wrong?
Not really its part how information is distributed across the globe, the licensed process either owns up to it and competes with it or ignores it and tries to bully it out of existence by buying laws and taking freedoms and rights away from the public.

What would have to happen to make you stop?
Make non attempting profit distribution legal, its that simple if its not trying to compete with the licensed process on the profit side of things then it can never harm them. And torrents, links and such should be treated the same as hosting the file to ensure only the licensed process is protected from REAL crime.....

Or make you pirate more?
Taking more freedoms and rights away(DMCA/ACTA) making it annoying to use products you buy(DRM) over priced low content and qaulity crap(every other game made these days).
