What kind of stuff do you download? Movies, Tv Shows, Music

Do you think its wrong? Yeah it is, I used to buy all of my dvds and tv series but since i've moved out it's become ridiculously expensive if I want to keep up

What would have to happen to make you stop? If stuff cost less

Or make you pirate more? If prices went up

Quit frankly though I still refuse to Pirate games, not quite sure why, possibly because it's a pretty big hobby of mine or at least was, also having a wall of physical games is nice, although probably pretty unnecessary.

The only thing my friend pirates are games not released outside of japan. Even if he were to import them, he doesnt know how to patch games for english translations. However, some of my other friends pirate almost every game, which i look down upon. If we take oney from entertainment companies, tey will only make terrible products. One of my friends hasn't seen avatat because the only fims he has seen since starting university are on his laptop, and he spends his money on alcohol not cinema. I think piracy on such a massive scale is wrong.

What kind of stuff do you download?
Games and music

Do you think its wrong?
Music wise maybe, game wise no; european prices are just fucked up

What would have to happen to make you stop?
Games would have to cost just as much as they do in the US else I'll do it as long as I like

Or make you pirate more?
Further cost increase, more games that are just not worth buying

I pirate just about everything. For games, if they're good I'll buy them (i.e. I pirate for the sake of a demo, assuming one is unavailable) unless there's some horrible DRM like what Ubisoft and EA are getting into with the always-on internet requirement -- I will absolutely never pay for that. I don't buy movies because when I pay for one and try to watch it I have to sit through unskippable ads (previews are ads), wait for the menu to load, wait for the unecessary menu outro, sit through more unskippable shit, and then get to the movie; if I pirate the same movie and want to watch it, I navigate to the file and double-click it.

I download music. I simply can't afford to pay 15 euro for a CD I might not even like and most of the time the CDs I want can't be bought anywhere in the country. If I download an album or really like a band i will buy their CDs and official merch to support them.

I can honestly say if I had a better internet connection and more bandwidth i would be downloading games and dvds too. Piracy may be wrong but since my wallet is constantly bare I can choose to either no music to listen to and no movies to watch or pirate it.

EDIT:
What kind of stuff do you download?
Music

Do you think its wrong?
Music wise not really for the reasons stated above

What would have to happen to make you stop?
CDs costing a lot less

Or make you pirate more?
Increased prices on CDs and DVDs. Also DRM on games (looking at you ubisoft)

I started a thread last year that should help you a bit, http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.154091-You-are-killing-PC-gaming-Updated?page=1

Hope that helps! And yeah, I do pirate, but if I like the game/movie/CD you have to support them so I buy it.

What kind of stuff do you download?
Music, because I find new bands from the internet and check out their entire discography. If it becomes my favorite then I enjoy paying the money for their often aesthetic cds.
I also download PC Games mostly because there are rarely any demos for them anymore. I've always been a fan of "try it" before I "buy it".

Do you think its wrong?
Not at all. I consider it renting. It may cost companies immediate revenue, but I can't help but be a smart shopper.

What would have to happen to make you stop?
If there was somehow a "gamefly" service for PC games then I would definitely stop. But that idea is pretty illogical given how things work. I might settle for more demos of popular games. I'm getting into Steam a little bit and even bought a game I had downloaded a while back.

Or make you pirate more?
I'm not sure. If I like the music or game enough, I willingly play full price for a fresh hard copy. I guess if previews/demos became more scarce I would pirate more.

does downloading TV episodes count seeing as i refuse to w8 a yr to watch TV in australia especially as the way they screw with the schedules ill miss episodes anyways(tho generally i buy most of them once they eventually get released on DVD here
The legal method for you to watch your tv shows is to import from the states or pay for them online. If you aren't paying money you're probably doing it wrong.
how do i import something that isnt released in a hard copy because it just aired

And for clarification i have actually imported DvDs from america because they were out and australia hasnt released them

I bought season 2 and 3 of psych on dvd oh i dont know a year ago season 2 was only released on dvd on march 1st of this year 3 yrs after it was released on american Tv

Then theres shows like fringe i want to be part of the commmunity for shows like this but theres no ways to legally watch these in most cases in a relevant time frame

most legit services are blocked to USA only since the company wants to be able to sell them to the australian TV stations

besides as i said 90% of the tv ive downloaded i own on Dvd once it is eventually released

i have all 4 seasons of supernatural on dvd and id already watched them at least 2 times on the download copies

same goes for fringe , house , prisonbreak(channel 7 shuffled that around so much and basically made it impossible to watch which was one of the reasons i started watching TV this way

24 BSG and a fuck load of others

Well in the legitimate world, as things go people don't get everything they want and that is how companies want it. the "correct" thing for you to do is sit there and wait til it airs, or wait until you can purchase a real copy when the dvd comes out months after a season ends.

Edit: If you took the time to open this thread please take the time to vote so I can get a strong sampling

I am doing a 8 minute presentation for an exam and I want to throw in some research.

It will look at both sides of piracy and some stuff on DRM, I am looking for input to give my presentation more impact.

re re edit ( outside of the anonymity of the poll I will rejigger the question in hopes of more honest answers )

How often do your "friends" pirate stuff, Never, sometimes, allot or everything.

What kind of stuff do "they" download?
Do "they" think its wrong?
What would have to happen to make "them" stop?
Or make "them" pirate more?
If it's not available legally (watching a video online) or if I want to see if it's any good I'll pirate. I'll buy it if I like it.

I download videogames that are no longer produced so I can have the joy that those before me had. I pay for anything modern or that I'm capable of getting.

I do not think it's wrong and if I like it I'll be more inclined to buy future products from the company.

To make me stop they'd have to continue producing the product which is absurd for things from say 10 years ago

I would do it more if I got to experience less things

What kind of stuff do you download?
- Older Movies or Shows. Stuff that has fallen out of the limelight or aren't available.
- Games released prior to 5 to 7 years ago.
- Music; I'm not huge on music culture.

Do you think its wrong?
- Stealing is wrong in any light, if someone makes something they should get all the money they deserve. However if someone tries to re-sell something made eons ago where the original artist or creator aren't around anymore, then it's just a dick move to re-sell it solely for monetary gain.

What would have to happen to make you stop?
- Faster Internet and more free services like Hulu (except maybe for old games as well).

Or make you pirate more?
- Availability of things to pirate. Since I only pirate old things they are often very hard to find.

If I would pirate, (which I don't, but hypothetically) I would only pirate things with extremely bizarre distribution rights that are impossible to get in Region 1. (Namely the Doctor Who 1996 TV Movie.) However I am not very good with computers and largely assume I would get caught.

The companies dont care when i watch there program its the stingy australian companies that refuse to pay the money for new shows

Companies provide a service a service we as the consumer use this service

the general rule of thumb when you have consumers are that the customer is always right

And while if i lived in america id have no problem watching stuff as it comes out over there

the fact that i want to watch shows that may never ever make it to australia to begin with and the distributor is unwilling to give me a way to access the content even for a small fee is hardly my fault

if there was a worthwhile service for access in australia i would be there on day 1

I even used one for a business plan competition for university but the initial start up costs are beyond things i can organise

What: Programs I want to test or use for one thing, but don't feel like paying for. Don't have $500 for Visio only to use it once. Elsewise it's TV shows since the DVD's are overpriced and obscure music I can't find to buy online.
Legal: I doubt it is, but at the same time I'm not made of money.
Cheaper DVD and software prices to get me to stop, and not much can get me to pirate more.

What kind of stuff do "they" download? Tv Shows mainly, some music or movies

Do "they" think its wrong? No, In the Uk we do not get the tv shows for 5-6 days after the US on sky/cable and 5-6 weeks on terrestrial tv. If you are a member of a community of a tv show there is no way for you to see it before your american counterparts in the community.

What would have to happen to make "them" stop? They must be more accurate with release dates, release content downloadable legitimately with sponsored adverts or a reasonable price for digital download.

Or make "them" pirate more?being tight fisted profit hungry corprate types who are not reasonable - i was absolutely horrified to pay £10 to see clash of the titans 3d and it was not 3d I enjoyed percy jackson more which my friend pirated, we then went to see it in the cinema because it was a quality product.

What kind of stuff do "they" download? Anything that I can't get hold of normally. For example, I use a PSX emulator but use my own games. Sometimes music as well.
Do "they" think its wrong? I think it's wrong, but I find the current methods used to stop 'them' stupid and contradictory to their goal. While I do buy games with SecuROM, I tend to crack it afterwards so it's not a rental.
What would have to happen to make "them" stop? I see it as a matter of rather than punishing the potential buyers, rewarding the fanbase and giving a reason to willingly support it. For example, Steam is a brilliant service run by a developer known for its great, consistent and free DLC, and that isn't taking into account the quaility of their games. People are more likely to buy a Valve product than, say, Spore (SecuROM, costly DLC and mediocre gameplay). EA's heading in the right direction now (with day one DLC) but its far from there yet. Ubisoft, on the other hand, is going in the oppisite direction and warding away the customers with their internet connection schtick.
Or make "them" pirate more? People pirate. It's always the way, and while I'm not going to stop them, I'm not going to encourage it either. I suggest devs and publishers encourage people to buy their products rather than draw the consumers away.
