I prefer space, If It's In the RE4 style, I don't want my ten mushrooms talking up the same space as my pitfall trap or giant broadsword.

Definitely space, as some people have pointed out, whether it's the borderlands system (with expandable backpack) or RE4. To me, Deus Ex comes to mind. The ginormous weapons take up a lot of space so you can pretty much only have 2 of that kind, but smaller items stack and you can generally find most weapons in different places so if you leave something behind you can find another one later.. it just won't have the weapon mods.

Anyway, I digress. I found the weight system in Fallout 2 very annoying. Fallout 3 had a similar system too but it was an easier game so it didn't bother me as much. Inventory systems should make a game challenging, but not frustrating, and that's what I feel weight does. It may be more realistic, but that doesn't mean it's better for a game.

I love Fallout 3's weight based inventory system, because it forces you to make choices about what you want to keep and what to take based off of more than just how good the loot is.

I like when both are implemented. Not because it's better or anything, but because it makes the most sense. Unlimited storage only being hindered by weight is stupid (you'd look silly with 5000 pounds of junk hanging off of you). However, on the other hand, having limited storage, but being able to carry anything is just strange, like in WoW, when you kill a giant demon/boss, and bring his head back for a quest which is 10 times bigger than you. However, a mixture of the two makes the most sense, making it so you have to earn more storage space, but it doesn't matter because you can only lift so much.

I want a game that makes you progressively slower the more you pick up (Oblivion, and Morrowind have this in a sense, but you just stop moving once you pick up too much.

I prefer the space limit, mostly because I want to take a quick look at my inventory and see how much more I can carry. I don't want to have to have a calculator next to me when I'm playing video games!

Voted for both because 5kg of feathers is a little more awkward to carry than 5kg of gold bars.

weight for me i think. it makes more sense than space. you can always carry more bags... in real life you'd be limited by weight.

Both makes the most sense. Although space is the nicest for gameplay, as long as certain items stack.

It depends on the game. If it is RPG id like weight and and space limit but not to restricted.
But what i really miss is the limitless inventory from FPS games. Now you can mostly only have 2 guns and a pistol or only guns. I still love the Max Payne games where you could where enough guns and ammo for a small army.

I think Stalker did it best.

Every object occupies it's own space and has it's own individual weight dependant on condition.

You can carry a certain amount of weight without becoming over encumbered and your backpack only has so much space. Combining certain items reduces space taken but you don't lose any weight.

How much more realistic does it need to be?

Well maybe only being able to carry 3-4 weapons before having to hold them manually. XD
I thought the backpack had infinite space? Or was it finite in CoP, cause in SoC it sure isn't..

But I agree with you, I find this way of dealing with items+inventory the best. This, or the one used in Deus Ex.

My favorite is when you have to do it kinda like a puzzle. Each item takes up a certain amount of blocks and you have to organize them so they fit in. I cant for the life of me remember what game used this system though =/
I believe Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days used this, and i loved that system too.

I liked the weight limit in Fallout 3, despite being able to hold 1000's of bullets and 20 mini nukes without penalty.

Good thing F:New Vagas is going to have ammo weight limits too!

Eh...it doesn't really matter, so long as it can be increased and isn't too limiting. I do like to carry around a ton of stuff. Especially in a game like Borderlands or Fallout 3, where you're ALWAYS finding new stuff, it sucks to have to start picking and choosing which things to keep.

You people saying RE4 and Diablo and Deus Ex are missing a much older game that did that style of inventory first.

UFO: Enemy Unknown (although some people know it as XCom: Enemy Unknown or even XCom: UFO Defense - but they're all the same game) did it before any of those games did it. As did the first sequel (which most old fans recognise as the only *REAL* sequel) X-Com: Terror From The Deep. Good games, incidentally.

But back to the topic... It depends entirely on the game, mostly in the sense of what kind of feel you want the game to have.

People associate weight systems, or combination weight/space system, with realism. Space only, depending how it's done, can feel semi-realistic or like an extra minigame, depending how it's implemented. It can sometimes be a bit of both, like In the old X-Com games. This was mostly because the limits were very harsh on how much you could carry in comparison with most space-based systems. The fact that equipped items take up a separate equipped item slot rather than a space in your backpack is always a good plan (a lot of games do this, but there are some that don't, so it's worth mentioning)

I like how in Gothic series you have no limitation whatsoever so you end up carrying a continent's worth of loot in your backpack. But then comes a time when you need something specific and you spend 15 minutes trying to find it.

Anyway, if I had to choose from the two I would go with weight, besides being more "realistic" I really dislike those jigsaw puzzle like inventories (eg Diablo).

I prefer a space limit, because I tend to get pretty annoyed when I'm playing Fallout 3 and end up having to jettison useful items because I don't want to walk so damn slow

For me, one of the best inventory systems I've played with was Resident Evil 4. Everything is in proportion, and bigger items actually take up more room than the smaller ones. Also, if you start to fill your suitcase you get a fun little Tetris minigame :)
