It has christ in the name - Uk is trying to be PC and call it winter festival. It can be celebrated commercially and it is. I just simply want people opinion as to the why's and their fun replies!

2 ways of looking at X-mas:
1. Santa Claus - Brings presents. No Jesus enters the picture.
2. Jesus - Celebrate his death, go home, Santa Claus brings gifts.

Don't need to be religious to celebrate gift giving and kindness :)
Just as a quick note, they're celebrating Jesus' birth. But I don't care. I just want the presents.

Blasphemous! Yeah I ticked the "doesn't have any religious meaning" box too, but they could have put a time like that in the summer! Call it superfamilygamingtimemass
I'd vote for that.

Or we could all move to Australia, they really do have christmas in summertime.

You and 2 other people were quick to call me out on that :D
I edited it accordingly, it should be there in a few minutes.

He was a saint born after the Bible was written. Fun fact: during a Biblical council, St. Nick punched a blasphemer named Arian in the face. Oh the things you learn in Catholic school.

It's not even Christian.

Jesus was definitely not born during the Winter, since the bible records shepherds tending their sheep in the fields on that night. This is quite unlikely to have happened during a cold Judean winter. Christmas was held on the 25th of December to coincide with the Pagan festival of the Son of Isis (Goddess of Nature). Traditions included raucous partying, gluttonous eating and drinking, and gift-giving.

Yet another self-contradiction, courtesy of Christianity.

I don't give a shit, it could be called 'The holy gathering for the celebration of the our O so divine lord' and I could still celebrate it secularly: You just buy people presents and have a party without saying prayers or performing a ritual.

Do you notice that most people who are non-religious still celebrate christmas, not just gamers?

Hmm.

Sure, we're hypocrites by that analogy.

Yeah its hypocritical, but, as a religious person myself, who cares? The people who are religious will treat it as such and the non-religious people, well they can do whatever the hell they want, whether they just want their materialist fix or getting together with family. I'm hoping us religious folks are tolerant enough to accept that and leave well alone. I know a lot of people won't but they can go shove a candy-cane up their arses.

Dude whats with the defense - you ripped apart my paragraphs to make it look like I was attacking you! It started out as a religious festival - the UK (where im from) tried to call it the winter festival, and I agreed that it is celebrated commercially more than religiously.

You have to realise, to most people christmas is no longer about christ the redeemer and all that religious stuff, it's about family bonding and a time of rest. think about it, christmas is during the harshest month of the year. hundreds of years ago, people would be so distressed by the terrible cold and lack of crops that without a festival like christmas, many people would lose hope. it's all to raise moral in the trying winter months.

Isn't christmass a mash-up of old traditions (winter festivals for insatnce) from several cultures, which just got "christened" a long time ago in a galaxy far away
Indeed it is.

OT:
My entire family gets together at my grad mother, we eat good food and give each other presents.
Santa get's cookies and milk.
Religious? Never was for me.

Not to mention the epic darkness. on the 21st of December the sun finally turns again, and that is good thing to celebrate.

Christmas is a holiday dedicated to Capitalism.

Before that, it was devoted to Christianity.

Before that, it was some pagan...thing.

50 or 60 years ago however, yeah we'd all be hypocrites.

So christmas has evolved beyond religion - thats a pretty cool idea, because now we are in such a consumer society, christmas is neccessary now.

There is no irony. I'm not Christian, and I celebrate Christmas. Gamers aren't the only atheists.

Calm down, dude. No offence was intended, I merely choose not to include the parts of your comment which I was not going to address.

It's nice that you made this topic in order to provide everyone some good discussion though.

It also has "mass" in the name. Does that mean only Catholics and Anglicans are allowed to celebrate it?
