I don't think it's rude to give cash, but something about receiving it does make me a bit uncomfortable. I'm not even completely certain why, it just feels...wrong, somehow.

It's definitely a surefire way to avoid the white elephant. Nothing says thank you like a gift you'll never even bother to look at.

A gift is a gift is a gift. I honestly enjoy getting cash... especially from multiple people because it's sort of like everyone is teaming up to get a big gift. The only thing about cash is that it's less personal. Even a gift card to somewhere shows you know them enough to at least know where they shop.

Not really. I actually prefer money most of the time since a lot of my family members don't know me all that well, and I usually consider whatever it is that I buy with the money to be their ACTUAL gift. For example; I got $50 from my aunt this year. I'm going to use that money to buy Dead Space 2 when it comes out next month. So, in essence, my aunt bought me Dead Space 2, which just about one of the most awesome gifts I can think of.

No it isn't rude, but it's a lazy and boring thing to do for a Christmas gift. Though if you can't think of anything they want, might as well get them something they like or can spend on something they like.

Depends, but for me it's okay. I'm pretty hard to choose for so people always give me either money or book/DVD coupons to buy my own presents.
On Chinese New Year giving out cash in red packets as gifts is a custom.

Cash is something you give to people who ask for it. For example, I asked for cash this year, and got 100 in cash, and $75 in checks. But I am a college student without a job. I would like money. These gifts of cash were given by my parents, uncles, etc. Giving someone around your age a gift of cash is lame, unless you and they both know it is for a specific purpose.

Not really rude because they know better what they want than you do but i'd say it shows a lack of thought.

I don't think so.

Sometimes your not gonna know what someone wants.
So Giving cash is ok.
It lets the person get what they want while saying "hay, i want you to get something nice!".
Or at least to me, though sometimes it can be lazy.
Especially if you just give them "pocket change" imo.

It's normal in China. They even give it in red envelopes traditionally.

I got £100 today as a gift.

I prefer cash. At least I can buy something I want, or save it for later. ^_^

Giving cash is WIN!

Would I rather a tasteless woolly hat from a friend I never see nor care about, or £10?

It's not rude, it's just down to earth.

This is something about where I live. No matter how well you know a person, you are always supposed to get them something that you picked out for them. While this is a nice gesture in showing how well you know some one, it has gotten to the point where giving cash, or even multi-store gift cards, is considered rude and somewhat trashy. I was wondering if this is something that occurs everywhere, or unique to my area.

Personally, I find nothing wrong with it. I figure if I don't know what somebody wants, they'd prefer card with a twenty inside of it to a dancing stuffed bear or whatever I picked out.
I got my brother and his wife 20 bucks this year. I could never find anything for him as a kid, so this works out perfectly:p. I see nothing wrong with it, and if I were to get twenty dollars, there's alot I could do with it. Although I have to admit that I like it when I get an actual surprise gift.

It can be a somewhat lazy gift and it isn't that interesting to receive, but I don't see it as a rude or bad gift. Maybe they just weren't able to find anything for you so rather than buying something you wouldn't like, instead they gave you enough money to pick something out for yourself. That way you can get exactly what you wanted. A gift card shows a bit more effort, but money is more versatile.
