The ultimate way to look like you don't know your friends is to get 'em a gift card because there's about no way the store you pick is gonna be the right choice. This is why cash is better.

Naw. All it says is that they are hard to buy for, and depending on who the person is, that can be a compliment.
I'd throw in something you think they might like; just a little something nice to go along with the money. People like to be able to link an actual possession to a present, rather than the money they spent on something as their present.

Not really, but sometimes giving them a gift voucher shows you put a little more thought into your present, while it basically is cash.

If your not sure what they're after etc, then I think its better then buying something you have no use for at all (has happened many times). But if you just give them money despite knowing what they'd might like and within reason of price, then your just being a lazy git.

Christmas is all crap it is a time of giving but there are unspoken attachments.
1. the gift must not be money
2. the gift must be over 5 dollars
3. commonly accepted that to give a gift you must get one back (so much for the giving spirit)
4. you must give a gift of even amount to the person you trade with or else cause them disappointment
I really just don't like these rules because it makes giving a necessity and it is no longer giving.

I got cash this year and loved it because now I can treat myself. It's always nice to have spare money around for nice things.

I don't mind it, in fact I prefer it since I am very tech savvy but most of my immediate family is not. (My brother and sister are more tech savvy but since we are all very poor we don't exchange gifts. If I start talking about what game I want to get or what device I want, my parents think I am speaking Yiddish, so it is either cash or they need to have me go to the store and point at what I want.

it depends on the situation, really. for christmas, gifts all the way. for birthdays, gifts for direct family: parents, siblings, spouse, children....for everyone else, money will do just fine if you ask me.
we dont really have many other holidays for gift giving here, so ill leave it at that

If they're a good friend or family member, an actual gift would be better, but money is perfectly okay for anyone else.

I enjoy getting cash because half the time I don't know what I want, and it makes me feel rich for a couple of days post-Christmas.

Depends on the person. I am a geeky college student. Money is cool with me. Students are poor.

For your wife? Even a crappy little toy is better than money.

I'm fine with a gift or cash but obviously a gift is more personal and a tad more special. What does annoy me is gift cards, because I always get them for shops I don't use.
Agreed. Gift cards cost the amount that they're worth, yet can only be used in one place, so really, they're just giving you less valuable cash.

As for whether money is a rude gift: no. It's the best gift ever, and I find it stupid how it's rude because everyone would like to get it. After all, if somebody gave you a lightsaber that can't accidentally kill you, would you be mad? No, no one would, and that's certainly not a rude gift now is it?

It is a bit rude, but if you don't know the person too well it is acceptable.

The reason many consider it rude is because it make it seem that you don't care eg
"I've got to get a gift for Bob, ah fuck it I'll just give him a tenner."
If you know the person you are supposed to get them somthing they may like and by extension prove that you care about and understand them, if you get a bad gift they can think "at least they tried" but money is like saying "I cant be arsed thinking about what'd make you happy so here's some cash." the same applies to multi store gioft cards, if the card is for a game shop it's like "I know you like games but don't know which type you like/which ones you already have" as opposed to "here's some cash that you can only spend in these select stores" I'd prefer cash to be honest but a single store gift card makes it seem as though they are at least trying.

It depends on the person. I'm the kind of person who don't have many wishes for Christmas (rarely more than my parents and sisters can get), so the rest of them have to either come up with something I might like or give me cash or gift cards. Gift cards is safer. In many cases though, not giving a "real" present just shows that you either don't know the person very well or don't care to by anything.

Heeelloooo! Yes, of course it is. Ya know how they say, "It's the thought that count." Just doling out cash evinces no thought.
