"Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand."

-Albert Einstein

So, what do you think? Add a reason why, too!

I voted yes, I mean the Wright brothers were probably looked upon as dreamers back in their day with visions of flying machines.

Really it depends on what you're doing. If you are/want to be an artist of some kind, or a writer, you're going to need imagination. If you are/want to be a scientist, professor, or if you want to work with numbers or computers, you're going to need knowledge.
There are also times when the two overlap.

I think it depends on what you want to do. Imagination would probably be better for someone creative, but new discoveries comes from imagination, not what we already know.

Imagination is somthing specific toone person, one person may have a wonderful idea that changes the world, but it belongs to that person, knowledge belongs to everyone, if I don't know something someone out their does.

if you knew everything but could never imagine anything then you could never do anything.
now if you could imagine anything without any know-how you'd still end up doing a whole bunch of stuff with creativity and a little bit of luck.

Imagination is just as important as knowledge. You need imagination to come up with new ideas, but you need knowledge to base those ideas on.

What are you trying to accomplish?

Einstein has a point, in that imagination is absolutely vital for any field that benefits from visionaries, but for those without ambition, knowledge ensures success in the meantime.

I'm all for progress, so imagination.
As long as we can use it properly which requires knowledge. (and ethics)

-me

like in all things we need a balance of the two

-again me (but probably 500 other people aswell)

No, because imagination is dependent on knowledge, as knowledge provides a base from which our imagination grows; you can have knowledge without imagination, but you can't have imagination without knowledge.

Imagination without knowledge lacks direction and can lead those who possess it to harm themselves. There's a little saying about what killed the cat... and it stems from imagination.
However, knowledge without imagination has no method of growth.

I'm eating pancakes as I type this.

Such a quote infers nothing regarding daydreaming. It encourages curiosity and creativity, not idleness.

Knowledge for knowledge sake imagination is unnecessary, but to apply that knowledge imagination is everything.

The issue is more complicated than just black and white. A good mix of the two is probably best. If I had to choose one and not the other, Id probably choose knowledge, but that's just me. Religion stems from imagination (and ignorance)so I am inclined to go with knowledge.

Imagination can fuel knowledge. Knowledge can fuel imagination. They are both equal and powerful things that work with each other to provide genius.

Yes. This was my high school graduation quote. For example just take a look at all the crazy new military tech coming out. Laser beams? Rail guns? Mechs? Where did all this shit come from? You guessed it! From science fiction novels and video games. With out the imagination to come up with this shit, it would not have existed.

Dream it, imagine it. And someday it could be reality.

Equally important, the both of them. Without a strong imagination, then this species would never be able to get anywhere during the course of time. Look at all of the major inventors during their time (Einstein included), they were both very imaginitive (if not somewhat crazy). Yet they used both a combination of imagination and knowledge to create something great or benefit humanity incredibly. Look at electricity. Look at mario for pete's sake! All of them had some claim to fame in the fact that they were all original. Some great movies were spawned from the sheer imagination of the creators. Look at almost all Pixar films (i.e toy story, Wall e, UP) each one took a tremendous amount of imagination and talent to make a reality.

However, without knowledge, you could do nothing with your imagination. Sure you could be that guy that plays with a lightsaber in front of a camera that is shortly posted on youtube, but that's not necessarily doing anything useful. While this guy was tremendously hilarious, he was probably imagining fighting god knows what or being the hero of his own world. Or just doing it for the lols, no one knows. But if Einstein did not know how to go about proving his ideas, if the team of pixar didn't have the skill, talent, or knowledge to create their movies then the ideas would just stay in their heads forever.

see where I'm coming from on this? It's an equilibrium of the two that brings about change and leads us to the ever winding road of life.
