Just as important. Without knowledge, imagination cannot be recognised. Without imagination, knowledge cannot evolve.

I am an engineer. I have to vote knowledge, it would almost be against my nature to choose otherwise.

I voted yes, I mean the Wright brothers were probably looked upon as dreamers back in their day with visions of flying machines.
Without knowledge they would have ended up splattered on the sidewalk like so many before them.

Imagination is important, sure, but without knowledge you get hordes of untrained idiots trying to patent ideas for perpetual motion machines and believe in random and detrimental ideas with no evidence (which happens in real life... a lot)

just a bit of humour.

OT: Yes. I mean, i wouldnt say you should have and not the other, but Imagination is what pushes us to do something, to make what we think real. HWere knowledge is just know what is already real.

Then again, its good to have knowledge so that people who imagine they can fly dont try it wihtuot mechanical assistance.

I agree with most people here that imagination and knowledge are equally important.

Knowledge is resources, the raw materials of the mind, and imagination is the ability to plan and construct things using these resources. You can't have one without the other. Even science fiction writers must have had some mental idea of how everything worked in their worlds before scientists and engineers came along and actually developed lasers, computers, robots, etc...

nobody asks you for your imagination in a job interview. A teacher once said to me:
''your the best person at being jack'' (PATRONISING)
I didn't to be polite, but i felt i should have said this:
''nobody will ever ask me if i'm good at being myself in a job interview''

Einstein just wanted to make people not smart enough to really get anywhere in life feel better.

Your imagination isn't separate and isolated from the knowledge base it draws from after all.

Without your imagination you're simply left with an accumulation of knowledge; whereas without knowledge your imagination has no basis to push off from. At the basest level, since knowledge comes before imagination, I argue that it's less important than knowledge; but just as necessary.

They are equally important.

Without knowledge we can not resume working on the imagination of other great minds.

imagination is good...but then what are you supposed to do with it? I reckon knowledge is more important because if you have knowledge you can use imagination to use that knowledge in other situations

I think imagination and knowledge both work best when they are used together. Imagination is great, but knowledge gives it substance. Stories like the Lord of the Rings, Narnia, and Arthurian lore are all steeped in old legends, myths, and history. Knowledge is required to refine details, such as what horses can and can't do, how to take care of them, what one needs for a long journey, and what have you.

Both the style and art that go into the set and costume design in both fantastical film and video games is frequently based on styles of the past. A good portion of large-scale architecture nowadays is based on styles and flourishes of older styles. The Greek style, the Roman style, the Egyptian style...and no, it's not considered "ripping" off. Each of those styles have their own personalities and atmospheres they put off. To do research and find out which style (or styles) gives the appearance you want, and then to have the ability to take those elements and creatively use them in the right places is the key to creating any sort of "unique" style.

Of course, a lot of good can come from either one separately. But on projects that require both using too much imagination can result in a disconnect with your audience, and too much knowledge can make something feel stilted and unoriginal. So use only equal portions of knowledge and imagination for the best effect. Then stir thoroughly, and don't forget to add the cinnamon!

In the sense that imagination is what entails you to make leaps of understanding beyond what you have learned, and to connect things on your own, then yes, imagination is more important. Just knowing things isn't really worth a lot if you don't have the creativity to apply it in new and interesting ways, and it is through imagination that we have uncovered a lot of great ideas and knowledge that we never would have come across otherwise.

Great scientific minds like Galileo, Pythagoras and Archimedes, etc, were often also really creative people. They often didn't start from assumed knowledge - they had to go out and uncover totally new ideas, and make leaps of understanding that defied accepted knowledge.

Oh hell yes doesn't seem quite strong enough.
Knowledge obviously important for success, but it's easy to get, if you put you're mind to it anyone can be an expert in anything. However imagination is something you've either got or you don't. I'm not saying it can't be taught, but it is very difficult compared to knowledge which is piss easy.

you are just being jack now an putting yourself down.

Einstein would have never come up with the theory of relativity if he hadn't used his imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge but useless without it. My group wouldn't have got the prize for most innovative design if we hadn't used or imagination but we needed to use or knowledge to get the ball rolling.

Imagination is an application of knowledge and ignorance certainly limits imagination.
They are both important but in the cycle of things knowledge comes first.

I'd say they're about equally important. Dreamers can innovate, but only hard technical knowledge can bring those innovations to life.

Yes. For the most part, someone with imagination had to discover the knowledge, if that makes sense.
