If its tasteful then yeah its good. Like Lara or Samus, simple, but maybe not Cloud or Tifa or Mario.

It all depends on the name. If you name him Nathan after Nathan Drake, or Lara after Lara Croft, then okay. Fine. Those are normal names. But naming the kid Dovakin, Number 47 or Conker is just fucking stupid. Come on, the poor little kid has to live with that for the rest of his life, man. Smarten up.

i have no problem with it in a tasteful way, one you are not naming a pet afterall...

somewhat off-topic, and not judging or anything, but to all the posters with responses to the effect of: "when i have a daughter/son i am going to name them _________" you do know your significant other will most likely want a say as well yes?

If you're of a Japanese background there's a lot of names you could get away with that any other person couldn't. A lot of the names from Skyrim would fit if you fooled someone into thinking you were of Nordic heritage. And some names you could pass off as merely being hippie or pagan XD

I voted that it is wrong.

But that is because I love my name. My entire name is loaded with history. My first name comes from a close family friend and publisher that my parents loved dearly, my second name is my fathers name, my third name is my grandmothers maiden name and my surname is my surname.

And I like that.

I would hate to grow up, ask my parents why I am called [Redacted] and find out I was named after a character in a video game. Because it would indicate, in my eyes, that my parents were too immature to come up with a real name. That my parents were such social recluses that the best thing they could come up with was "Protagonist from a game we both liked".

Although I understand that my view is strange. Because my sister wishes to name her kid "Aldous" if she has a boy, after Aldous Huxley, her favourite author and one of her partners favourite authors. I have nothing wrong with that, because that author shaped her childhood and her partners childhood. I guess that is possible for a game character.

Yet I find it highly bloody unlikely. Maybe I just have not played good enough games.

It's wrong to abuse brackets like the OP did, but I don't really care about what people name their kids. I mean, I might laugh at the parents for doing it, but that's about the extent of it.

Incidentally, I was almost named Mario. Like the hockey player, not the videogame character. Glad I dodged that bullet.

My mother works at a doctor's surgery which does a lot of childbikrthing stuff. I wish I could remember more of the names, but one in particular that sticks out is a couple naming their child Anakin. I don't think it's a particularly nice name, but to each their own.

I don't think it's wrong unless you pick a particularly outlandish name that WILL associate them with that game...like...Parthurnax or something.

On a side topic, I wouldn't mind naming my (hypothetical) daughter Rinoa. Apart from being a big game in my childhood I do actually think it's a pretty girl's name. That's if we ever decide to have kids >.>

Nah, I think it's ok. No more silly than naming a kid after anyone else fictional. I think if I have a daughter I might call her Samus...

Robin Williams' daughter was specifically named after the Princess [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zelda_Williams]. Who was in turn named after Zelda Fitzgerald [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_Zelda].

I voted undecided, because if it is wrong or not depends on the name used. Is it wrong in theory? No, I don't think so, you should be able to name your child whatever you want. However, this is as long as (as many people have already said) the name sounds good. And it's the same as naming your kid after a character from a book/movie/etc. There is definitely a line that should not be crossed. Kids are cruel, and if your child has a name that is just too far out there, they will be mercilessly mocked for it. My name is Chris, which I believe is still in the top 10 names for boys in North America, so it is not out there at all. Rhymes with piss, as many kids liked to point out/tease me with. Didn't bother me for long though, since it got old pretty quick. The stranger the name, though, the more likely kids will get creative in order to tease your child.

Basically, your kid is going to be teased for something at some point in their life. Whether it is something they are interested in, like a favorite singer/song/movie/actor, or a hobby, or whatever, why add more ammunition by giving them a weird name? Plus, as also stated, if you feel you couldn't go into a job interview and stating that your name is x, then you probably shouldn't name your child that.

If it's an actual name, no. It obviously doesn't make any kind of difference.
If you name your kid something weird like Solaire or Link or god danm Zelda, then yeah, you're screwing them over because they will be made fun of mercilessly. Unless you hate your kids, don't give them weird names.
Rain is a weird name, Joy is a weird name, Janaferro is a weird name. Zelda is not a weird name, archaric maybe but I know Zelda whom their parents didn't even know of the existence of the series before the kid found out about the games.

I will name my first daughter Stacey, so I will be dating Stacey's mom, and she will have it going on

My first son will be called Luke, so I can say "Luke, I am your father"

My next daughter will be called Narnia, so when I'm giving her anything I can shout "FOR NARNIA!!"

My second son will be called Sparta, so I can introduce him to others by yelling "THIS! IS! SPARTAA!"

---------------------------------

Borrowed from a meme I saw. The first two names are fine in my opinion since Stacey and Luke are already established names. The second two however (Narnia and Sparta), aren't really. It can be considered child abuse to give your child a ridiculous name. Parents have lost custody of their kids over it before;

It doesn't really matter where the name comes from in my opinion so long as it isn't ridiculous.

Provided that it's either an established name or something that at least sounds like an established name, then I don't think it matters, or at least the parents could reserve the more unconventional name as the middle name, as again I don't think that would really matter. I'm kind of surprised nobody's posted the David Mitchell video on this subject yet and whilst I agree with it to an extent, I also think something a little overly plain and ubiquitous like Tom or Jack (there were at least 20 of them at my school alone that I knew of) isn't great either. It wouldn't hurt to pick something just a little less monotonous than that methinks.

No...
Although that couple that named their kid Dovakin or whatever was fucking cruel. Seriously? SERIOUSLY? That child has to live with that name, at least until they're old enough to change it... (18? 21?)
But most names, I reckon are okay. But hey, it's their business I guess, some people hate their names, despite being named "normally", so what do I know?

on the other hand poor little "Cloud" or "Subject Delta" aren't going to get an easy ride through school. So really, it depends on the name itself more than anything else.
Couldn't help but be reminded of this:

But yeah, I guess it depends on the name really.

Personally, I like the idea of naming my future kid Vivi, but I doubt that's a really good idea in the long run for him/her.

There are children out there named Facebook. It's pretty tough to get worse than that (unless you name your child, "Fuckface McGee" or something).

No...in fact, using the names of characters I like, (whether from video games, books, movies, etc.), is pretty much the only I could think of naming a child...I've not really a particular liking towards any one name...(though there are names I don't like)...but rather those who held them. Though I'd only do stuff that actually sound like real names...
