I have heard a lot of debate over this topic, and I want to know what the general consencus is. If you consider Minecraft a game, then what justifies it, and if not then what is it instead?

Yes. The only difference is that the player is set to create their own goals. Basically an extreme version of your run of the mill open-ended RPG.

that depends on whether you think playing with blocks is a game (i think so anyway). and that what it is playing with blocks with skeletons and other such baddies attacking at night.
i believe if there is play, there is a game.

Yes. It can be an adventure game, it can be a spelunking/exploration game, a hack and slash game, an fps, and, or course, a huge sandbox game. The lack of a specific goal doesn't make it any less of a game.

A case of Yahtzee worship here, he says it isn't a game, suddenly now we care about this notion.

When I'm challenged (e.g. playing on any difficulty besides "peaceful"), I consider it a game.

Otherwise, it's more like infini-LEGO with farm-animals.

yeah its a game, and it further enforces the argument that games are art, allowing players to create virtually anything they can dream of. its like legos for big nerds...even though I still play with my legos....

Er, WTF? I didn't know there was even any question... How could it not be a game?

It really depends on what you mean when you say "game". Most people will give it that based solely on its properties of being an interactive enjoyable experience, with many properties similar to conventional games. However, the open-endedness usually gets people talking about whether or not it's a game. There's no goal, so in many ways, it can't be.
However, I say it is, if only because of the potential of dying (at least, on any mode other than peaceful). Because you can fail, your goal becomes not to fail. So for me, it's a game.
Of course, when you turn on peaceful mode, it becomes a building simulator, which definitely blurs the line a bit.

it's a game just like a basic atari 2600 game is one.It may be simplistic compared to say God of War 3 or Civ 5 but it's a game and many love it.I happen to have no interest in it myself but got nothing against it at all

Don't forget a tower defence game.

OT: Yes just becouse you have to find a goal yourself doesn't make it any less of a game

I'd say more of a defend your castle game, since a tower defense game usually involves enemies trying to get from point A to point B, while your towers take them out.

Garrysmod is a game so is minecraft. Garrysmod you build contraptions like rocket ships. Minecraft you build huge towers.

It is not a game. However, it gives the subscriber the power to build a game. It is what developers call an engine. The only big differences between it and say the Warcraft 3 engine are that you need to know scripting in WC3's editor if you want to make anything better than a straightforward versus match, and Minecraft has explodey shrubs.

It's a sandbox. Some people consider those games, it's a matter of opinion.

It's a survival wide-open-sandbox game. Having mobs to fight helps it to be a game.

I wouldn't say that since the majority of people here disagree with Yahtzee saying it isn't a game.
