Minecraft can be considered a Game or a Sandbox.

For the game part, you could try to get the best weapons and then stay outside at night to try and kill as many skeletons and exploding bushes as possible before you die. You could also try to dig the biggest possible whole you could imagine.

For the sandbox, you could try to build the biggest, best-est for that ever was or any other type of object you want. A lot of people have created massive scale models of the earth and of the Enterprise from star trek.

In the end, it depends if you are creative it is a sandbox, but if you want to kill things it is a game. But if you are after a game where something explodes or dies every .5 seconds than you may as well go play Black Ops or Halo.

I swear, the people who vote No probably did so because they either dislike the game or are loyal to the word of 'Y'

It's still in beta, so a lot can change by the time it's released. As it stands... I'd say it's a game in the sense that "The Sims" or "Animal Crossing" is a game. There's entertainment and interaction, but there's no ultimate goal. That is to say, you don't really "win", you just "play".

I've spent a good few hours playing it. Just because its goals are self-set doesn't make them any less goals, and it's definitely not a 3D modelling engine! It has combat, it is a sand box - it's one of the most open games in existence, but a game it still is.

A case of Yahtzee worship here, he says it isn't a game, suddenly now we care about this notion.
I wouldn't say that since the majority of people here disagree with Yahtzee saying it isn't a game.
Don't we all worship yatzee. I've seen all his videos. Personally i think it's a game. There is a lot of yatzee worship going on here. Even though most of the people think it's a game this argument didn't come up till his minecraft review. It happens all the time people dissagree with yatzee but we still continue to watch. Arguing with yatzee is still a form of worship because his words matter enough to you to protest. If it was just some mindless jerk then you wouldn't care and you would bother trying to argue but every one worships him ever if they dissagree.

It's a game in that it provides a player with a set of tools to interact with for the purpose of entertainment. The actual perceived goals of the game are up to the player, but it seems that the community has collectively and organically decided that the game should be about building the most impressive and creative structures imaginable. I've seen things ranging from a full-scale model of the USS Enterprise (with both exterior and interior fully modeled) to a working roller coaster.

As a few other people have said, Minecraft is like a set of building blocks; we're handed the tools and are allowed to do pretty much whatever our imaginations dictate.

It is not a game. However, it gives the subscriber the power to build a game. It is what developers call an engine. The only big differences between it and say the Warcraft 3 engine are that you need to know scripting in WC3's editor if you want to make anything better than a straightforward versus match, and Minecraft has explodey shrubs.
Gotta disagree. An engine gives you total control in the editor mode, whereas in Minecraft you're faced with the challenges of adversaries (whose behavior cannot be manipulated by you) on your self-set goal. So, definitely game.

So basically you've seen all his videos and continue to do so despite disagreeing with him and clearly put enough effort to take part in a discussion which is, as you term, 'Yahtzee-worshiping'. So, within context, aren't you a Yahtzee worshiper as well?

Technically it has all the necessary requirements of a game. You control a character, and do stuff with said character.

Conflict: You versus the denizens of hell each night.

Gameplay: Protect yourself against denizens of hell each night, build anything you want to.

Interface: WASD, mouse, click menus, click combat.

Developer claims: "It's a game."

Fun: Yes!

Fits my criteria for a game.

Taking it a bit farther: I guarantee that NO ONE would deny that Dwarf Fortress is a game, but it has the same sort of gameplay as Minecraft, same goals (survive), build stuff, etc. The only difference is that Dwarf Fortress is prohibitively complex, and Dwarf Fortress is a God game, while Minecraft is a first-person miner.

Of course it's a game, how could it not be? Just because it has no story apart from the one you write yourself or final goal doesn't mean it is not. You look out over that landscape and there is literally infinite potential for adventure and discovery, a billion things to see. There are monsters to fight, dungeons to raid, people to work together with to do whatever you want, and so much to do and explore. I really don't see how it isn't a game. Yahtzee is wrong on that point.
