CD's are dead, as well as the fact that not many people buy their music anymore. They just download it.
In that case music is also dead and all the music being released is actually 10 years old. It's not dead, but when piracy rates hit a certain level (a while from now) and the labels stop making money, music will die as a consequence.
People will ALWAYS make music. No matter what it costs or makes.

Now, I wouldn't say the CD format is dead, but due to exponential growth of digital distribution, it certainly isn't alive and kicking. But, I'd rather have a physical copy than some lines of code and whatever on my computer.

They're going to go eventually.

I was into the whole "physical copy" thing a couple of years back too, and now a physical copy is a pain in the arse to store, discs get scratched (I've had some that won't even install games out of the box because they're fucked even when they're new), occasionally lost, etc.

I like CDs. After all, who the hell wants to listen to the radio on a drive?
You can buy FM transmitters that you plug into your ipod which then plays music over the car's radio.

OT: I only think the music CD is dead. The CD is still doing quite well in other areas. Especially in the videogame industry. I personally rather go out and but a hard copy of a game rather than wait eight hours for my game to download and use up my bandwidth (my internet connection isn't the greatest).

So the CD isn't dead, yet.

It's dying, not dead. I like CDs and to have a physical copy. I do think downloads are the future, and welcome it. But I will always have a soft spot for CDs.

I definetly prefer the CD that I can rip myself over digital media, theres always a chance that some itunes account or whatever gets hacked or revoked over some stupid reason, but then you'd still have the CD's.

I like having a physical copy of my games and music, the only time I tend to download stuff is if I can't get a hold of the hard copy.

It's a dead format that has been made widely obsolete due to better technology being available like DVD's or Bluray's. Bluray's will EVENTUALLY overtake DVD's due their superiority and, if broadbands allow, digital distribution will overtake all forms of physical media.

I honestly don't understand why publishers even bother publishing music in physical form. Most of the times I DON'T want an entire album since I don't like all the songs. But this isn't even the gist of it. You have to actually go to a store, browse through loads of section until you actually find the album as opposed to simply doing a search online and finding it in less than a second. Then you have to maintain the CD and we all know how annoying it is when discs don't work. All in all, digital distribution is the way to go. Going physical just inquires more costs.

Incidentally, shouldn't everything be cheaper once you go digital? You know, no production costs and all that...
Some of us prefer a physical copy and don't want DD.
Personally I don't see it disappearing ever, I'm not saying DD wont stay around, I just think they will both be there for those that want either. DD may become more mainstream, but CD's or any form of disc will stay around.

I like the look of a nice big pile of CD's stacked in the corner, so not for me. If they end up less popular like vinyl, I'd find special shops to buy them from and get them for collectors edition.
I'm actually buying my parents and myself some vinyl CD's for Crimbo. I don't have one of the players, but it'll look nice on the wall.

I don't always buy music, but when I do, I want the full physical media experience. Mostly so it doesn't all go radio bye bye when some arse turns off a server somewhere I've purchased [sub](read; leased)[/sub] it from.

Its nice to be able to download music off the Internet, but I have plenty of CDs and I still buy some every now and then. Having a hard copy is always nice because I can don't have to worry about the file being lost like I do with downloaded music. Although I do imagine that eventually the music industry will switch entirely to digital copies. I just don't know how long it will take as having a physical copy of a CD can be very convenient. Plus its really annoying that with iTunes you only buy one copy of a song rather than the song itself. You can't download that song onto another computer despite having bought it through the same profile. But thats an arguement for a different day.

I dont know. I'd say the popular opinoin is that they are, but if you were given a CD as a gift instead of buying it yourself, I'm sure digital downloaders would mind.

Personalyl i like CDs. They can be shared and borrowed, and its much less personal invasion to see what music a person likes then to go through tehir MP3s or Phones.

That, and radio still exists, and CD players are always better (IMO) then hooking your mp3 to a CD player for stereo sound.

I like CDs, but it does seem like digital distribution is taking over music, it seems like barely anyone listens to music in albums anymore, only in singles on shuffle.
I've been really happy since I discovered the "Shuffle Albums" on iTunes.

Oh yeah, it's dead alright. Eventually we'll all be listening to music on floating holographic cubes of intelligent argon gas and nanobots while dangling from the ceiling with our gravity boots and pocket jetpacks.

It's not dead, it's merely existing in a diminished capacity.

I'm betting in a year or two, Zombie will go back on his comments.

Yes, it is. If you don't think it is you are in denial. There will always be hard copies of games but downloads will be the primary way of getting games soon.
