What on Earth is a "Secret Muslim"? I tried googling it, but, somewhat predictably, all the results are about politicians being called 'secret muslims' by people who don't like them; without any explanation of the term or arguments to support... well, fucking anything really.

Is it somebody who is secretly a practicing Muslim, but pretends not to be? Is it one of those nutbaggy terms that has lost all meaning and thus actually has nothing to do with secrecy or Islam? Or is it one of those nonsensical political 'insults' bandied around by people with no legitimate point to make and were you simply making a funny?

I think the real question here is: who cares?
Yeah, I was looking for a "who gives a shit" option.

Though technically, it's not "who cares," it's "why do you care?" Because a lot of people do seem to give a crap about politics or religion over quality. If Yahtzee makes me laugh, I don't give a damn.

OK, I love the Simpsons reference there.

Well, from the things I have heard from him I doubt he's a communist although I don't know. It's possible and I've never seen him either deny nor confirm it. If he is, well, why should I care?

That's kinda the point.

To answer the question, they're someone whose religious faith is questioned. Obama, for example, is apparently secretly a Muslim, not a Christian. He's some sort of super secret conspiracy to take over America.

Or "insert country here," if you wish.

Just makin' a funny. Specifically in reference to the relatively recent resurgance in baseless "red scare" accusations that person X might be a socialist/communist. The other popular one is "Secret Muslim" which is a concept I find bafflingly silly.

Wait, isn't that the same as the American sense of liberal? Because I am European and I think that what you said is textbook American liberal thinking.

Oh, okay. So "tin-foil-hat crazy talk", basically. I'll assume Diddy Mao was making a joke, then. One of the Google results did mention the Miss America pageant being part of the "secret Muslim" plot to overthrow America, which was the exact point I stopped researching.

EDIT: Diddy Mao did clarify as I was typing this.

It's not actually tin-foil conspiracies, we are talking about actual political moves to discredit Obama. Remember when there were rumors about Obama not being really American? Clearly they are spread by the opposition, just for the sake of damaging his popularity.

From what I've found from discussion about politics in America, the term 'liberal' tends to have negative connotations. For example, being for universal healthcare is rather normal and understood in Europe, whereas in America, it's often seen as the liberal wanting the government to control people's bodies. Gun control in Europe is mostly seen as a way to keep tools designed for killing out of the hands of those who abuse them, with concessions for hunters/farmers and such, while being for gun control in America is against the constitution, and is therefore considered not good.

No.

There's a marked difference, however, between what is marked as the ideological political centre in the US and UK, with the US being much more rightist.

The UK also doesn't have a history of demonising "Communism/Socialism" in the same way that the US does, or conflating "Communism/Socialism", a philosophico-political movement, with "Stalinism" the dictatorial system of government which developed from the mid-1920s onwards until Stalin's death in 1953, usurping the language of Marxism-Leninism to create a fundamentally rightist system, socially, with centralisation of power in the hands of a political elite class who were nevertheless subject to the Terror of the (OGPU/NKVD/)KGB through purges at Stalin's whim.

The UK is also much more at home with regulation of market forces for the benefit of the public at large without the introduction of a "THIS IS SOCIALISM!" narrative.

No, it is seen (from the American standpoint) as the government asking for more taxes to keep an ineffective healthcare system that will be abused and create even more debt.

Yes, there is also the part where they fear that the government gets to the point of controlling their lives.

No, it is seen as a way to keep guns away from people, period. It is of my understanding that most people here see gun ownership as pointless and that guns make people go insane just by touching them.

I'm not talking about "informed people" here. I am talking about the general populace, who is oblivious to guns in general. I have seen British people in The Escapist that were convinced that firearms were 100% illegal in their country, despite the fact that almost everyone in the countryside can get any amount of shotguns they can safely store.

A lot of people in America think that you need a license to own guns, and I think that's a good parallel. Here people think they are inherently evil objects and nobody should be allowed to touch them.

This sounds like the equivalent of a random guy watching a random video and calling the creator something random without further elaboration.

Then asking about how everyone feels about it.

Completely fucking pointless.

You ever see one of those threads where you just have to make a comment? It might not be related, it might not be funny or interesting, but the thread demands of you a response. Something to make your mark on the insanity that has evolved?

Yahtzee has only ever made one direct political statement of which I am aware. He doesn't like the ex-Attorney General for South Australia Michael Atkinson. Beyond that I have no idea. He makes jokes about how tough Thatcher's Britain was so I might assume he doesn't like or is ambivalent to Margaret Thatcher, but as any Brit can tell you that doesn't even mean a general dislike of the Conservative party and British right wing politics, so...

Long story short, I don't care, but this thread is awesome just for existing.
