Well my first Final Fantasy was VII. And while that game was great in it's own right, I can't say it's my favorite.

No, that honor goes to the second Final Fantasy game I've played. Final Fantasy IX. One of the best games I have ever played. I'm thinking of starting a new playthrough sometime this summer.
I think I'm going to agree with this. I love VII very much and it's probably my second favorite one (it was the first one I played), but I think IX beats it out in terms of overall quality. Although I prefer the soundtrack in VII.

But then, most people would think my opinion is invalid because I liked XII as well.

Nope, it was good it not my favorite. The first I played was VIII and it was really fun probably in my top 3 FF games but my favorite is easily IX, it was truly unique and one of my all time favorite games.

I started with Final Fantasy 1 and although I do love the game, it is not my favourite. That would be Final Fantasy Tactics or Final Fantasy XII that are in my favourite category.

I don't remember what my first was (maybe X), but I've been playing XIII-2 lately and think it isn't receiving the attention it deserves. Other than a few things that could be improved on, it's pretty great. I especially love the Historia Crux mechanic, and plot in general. It's got side-quests, puzzles, mini-games, collecting monsters, multiple dialogue options, about 8 paradox endings (and you can do them all since the story is based on time travel), etc, etc.

The biggest problem for most people will be the auto-battle, but if you think about it, a lot of turn based games have you spamming one button anyway. And the tactics are with the paradigm system.

Technically no but yes is what I voted. I played FF7 to FF9 when I was to young to appreciate them and as such my first serious Final Fantasy was FF10 which is evidently my favourite of the series.

An interesting note is that this pattern isn't the same with Zelda as OoT is my first but Majora's Mask is my favourite.

I think your opinion is perfectly valid.

Well, probably about as valid as mine as I also liked XIII. :p

My first was Final Fantasy VII, and whilst I still believe that to be the best, my favorite, and my favorite game period, is Final Fantasy VIII.

No, my first Final Fantasy game was Final Fantasy 2 (IV) on SNES, but Final Fantasy 3 (VI) is still my favorite.

So, I have a bit of a theory concerning the Final Fantasy franchise. It seems that, for most people, whatever Final Fantasy was their first is their favorite. I'd like to test this theory.

I know that for myself, this is the case. FFX was my first, and is my favorite.

So, what was your first Final Fantasy, and is it your favorite?
First off: ALL HAIL GDW!

Negative. I watched someone play Final Fantasy I and I poked the game a bit myself, however I didn't actually hop into the JRPG genre at all until Final Fantasy VII, which was good. It was later that I played Final Fantasy VI (FF3 US) and that is my favorite iteration of the Final Fantasy series to date, with Final Fantasy III a very close second which I played many years and games later.[footnote] Although they both get demolished by Chrono Trigger[/footnote]

Final Fantasy 14 is my favourite... because it's the only one I've played. :D I do have lots of memories of watching my brother and cousin play FF7 though, and my brother play the one with underwater football and the sky pirate one. Yeah, that's how much I know about FF.
Underwater football is probably X, but was there one based on sky pirates? I saw that and immediately thought Skies of Arcadia.

My first was actually 3, but other than the class system, which I'm quite fond of (though FF5 did it better) I didn't really like it much. Then, FF7. It's good, but it hasn't aged that well. My favourite is actually either FF4 (including Interlude and The After Years) or FF6. Both are great.

You and I both:] loved FFX and cannot wait for the HD version on PS3.
Umm... the FFX remake is coming out on the PS Vita, not the PS3. Hope I haven't burst your bubble.
Except that it's being released on both the PS3 AND the PS Vita.

But nope, my entry into the series was FFX, but my favorite is easily FFIX.

Correct. They're referring to Blitzball. As for the sky pirate one, that would be Final Fantasy XII which has Vaan(who wants to be a sky pirate) and Balthier(who IS a sky pirate).

FF6 was the third one I played (the first two being 1 and 4) and it's my favorite, with Tactics (my fifth?) being a close second.

The first one I played was Final Fantasy VII and I don't really like that game. I think it is extremely overrated and thinking back they started the trend with emo main characters in JRPGs. Not only did they make their own game boring because of the line "I'm not strong enough" they made several other games fall into the same trap because of it. Final Fantasy VI is my favourite and Final Fantasy is not my favourite RPG series.

No, but only on two technicalities. My first was Mystic Quest and my favourite is Tactics. If we discount spinoffs though 7 was my first and favourite. X came close to dislodging it but messed it up with that atrocious ending.

My first one was FFXII and I was just a young teen at the time. I was almost convinced from that point on that the Final Fantasy series was complete and utter shite after that until my girlfriend practically forced me to go back to a few of the older ones. After VII, I still wasn't convinced, but then she made me play VI and IX and those two have since stayed at the top of my favorite gaming experiences.

No- I played Final Fantasy VII first, and I can't really bring myself to play it again. VIII is my personal favourite, followed by XII and X-2. I guess I just have a thing for card games, rib cages and vapid divas.

I played FF7 first. I liked it. Was not blown away like the rest of the world. I liked 8 more. Those were my first two, I got them on the same christmas.

I liked them both as a kid, I poured over 150 hours into FF7, not as much into 8 because I didn't know of a lot to do in 8.

But yeah, those are...actually not even close to my favorites. I didn't like 1 or 2, until they were remade on the GBA. Those are respectively, 3rd and 4th place.

I played 6, and loved it. The story is my favorite story so far. I really enjoyed FF6, I have much better memories with 6 than I do with 7 or 8, I enjoyed the characters much more.

But no, my favorite final fantasy was the 4th one I played. Final Fantasy 5. Hands down. My favorite FF game of all time. I loved the characters, the story was ..to some stupid, but I like to call it quirky. Either way it was endearing to me. The job system made the game a blast to play, over and over again.

So, no my first is definitely not my favorite. 7 is actually pretty low on my list. (it's a list of 8. I felt final fantasy has just gotten worse since.)
