For me James Tiberius Kirk is the best captain between the two. Both are very good but Kirk did things that were illegal to the Federation. He knew it was, but he still went with it. He also went back in time in Star Trek IV The Voyage Home.
Now Jean Luc Picard was also great, he made decisions that could become fatal. He fought along side Kirk in Star Trek Generations. He also went into the Nexis and made it back safely.

I've always preferred Picard's personality and style of leadership. He always struck me as the kind of man who will be steady as a rock in a crisis, and will be able to ensure others remain able to do their job. Besides, Tizzy is correct, its freaking Patrick Stewart.

Kirk is extremely capable as well, but is too much of a wild card. It seems like half the scrapes he fights his way out of were at least in part his own damn fault to begin with for being so reckless.

I'll have to go with Picard, because Patrick Stewart!
I would have to agree. Hell, Patrick Stewart's voice alone instantly overshadows all of Kirk's positive aspects.

Plus, William Shatner is an egotistical douchenozzle.

I have to go with the Shat. Kirk all the way. Picard was just too late to the party for me. Besides:
Nimoy>Spiner
Takei>Frakes
Koenig>Wheaton
Nichols>Sirtis
Doohan>Burton
and Kelley>anyone you can think of.

Oh and there has never been an trek character with more sex appeal than Janice Rand...

Patrick Stewart automatically negates competition by being Patrick Stewart, so Picard.

Kirk is the typical 90's space action hero that somehow manages to reproduce with everything on every planet regardless of presumed biological leaps. Picard is the captain that could've solved the Reaper threat in Mass Effect by simply giving Harbinger/Starbrat a Picard monologue in the conference room for about 10 minutes.

Screw them both, I vote for The Sisko, first name "Don't Fuck With".
I second that. Picard gets his life ruined by the borg, he sits and drinks tea while contemplating this. The borg ruin siskos life and he goes away and designs one of the most powerful Federation ships and calls it Defiant (because they wouldn't let him call it captains siskos motherfucking pimp hand presumably)

What, you're gonna quote it without embedding it?

For shame!

Well... which Captain Kirk?

Meh... probably still Picard.

I do like Chris Pine's Kirk though...

Hands down, Captain Picard. He's a complete renaissance man who's so level-headed it's crazy.

Plus, Patrick Stewart could make the most banal scene seem like a bloody Shakespearean masterpiece.

We all know the only true captain is Janeway <3
The bipolar lunatic who got promoted to Admiral because she managed to lay waste to pretty much the entire Delta Quadrant's military forces on her "peaceful" mission to find a way home?

Not saying she isn't awesome for being a psychopath, but a model starfleet captain, she is not.

It's no surprise they got Kate Mulgrew to play Flemeth the mad witch.

Sisko
I always felt like he best mixes Picards reasoning and kirks kickassery
If he is not an option, send in the defiant.
Or pick Picard
