Of the 3 sun types, red sun makes Kryptonians essentially human, yellow gives us Superman, blue gives us Super-duper-man. Blue suns increase his physical abilities even further and give him "Superman vision" that lets him temporarily bestow his powers onto another.
Also there's what happened in All-Star Superman, flying into the sun itself will increase the kryptonian abilities to about blue sun level and remove the weakness to green kryptonite at the cost that you will probably die of some form of cancer pretty quickly (I didn't finish All-Star, I got to Bizarro world).
Further, I've always wondered about the shouting. I figured that was like the Ki-YA in Karate (Which as a student I say is crap but whatever) in that it helps to focus the power. Sure they could power up just as well without it but the shout helps their ki to be released at a more focused and higher rate.
I would personally go for Saiyan. While you would need incredible dedication to your cause, you can make yourself into an aryan God on a whim, and output enough power to shake the Universe.
And from what I understand about Superman's powers is that he takes his powers from an external sources, but Saiyans powers come solely from their internal force, which I think is cooler.

I would rather be a Saiyan
1. Super Saiyan (don't care about the higher forms the basic form is more than enough for me).
2. I would much rather have to train to gain my power than to receive it simply because I lived on a planet with a yellow sun. As for the lack of teachers thing I'm just going to assume that since Saiyan INFANTS were sent of to conquer entire planets that a Saiyan will instinctively learn how to use their powers eventually.
3. A cool space pod that leaves a crater when it lands.
4. Zenkai's aka getting stronger after injury all living things have this to a certain extent its the reason why our muscles develop with exercise Saiyans simply have a much more highly evolved version of this effect (which results in a power level increase as well).
5. Tail.
6. Super enhanced hearing that kryptonian's have would probable drive me insane.
btw being a Saiyan is not a guaranteed cure for balding caughNappacaugh (unless he was naturally bald at birth)

And the original Dragon Ball is the best Dragon Ball.
I like the Kryptonian morality better as I understand it. The Saiyans were like these cruel Vikings who had to be violent all the time. Basically Berserkers and the perfect Berserker fantasy. With a huge bloodlust and umlimited potential if they keep fighting and living through it. Whereas the Kryptonians seem to get weaker and weaker. And also seemed to have a more civil and intellectual society. I'd trust my life more easily to the average Kryptonian than the average Saiyan. And I'd also be a lot more comfortable having a conversation with one. Kryptonians, just seem, well, a lot more moral. Goku is obviously an exception, but we're talking about Saiyans in general.
Unlimited potential is definitely the ultimate power fantasy, though. It's like, the innate desire to be a Mary Sue. Also, Saiyans have more special effects and they don't seem inborn. I think the whole "Qi" philosophy makes more sense than just randomly being born with laser eyes. With Qi, there appears to be some method to the madness. And the effects are often fascinating. They change hair colours and all sorts of things when they reach new levels of power. That's kind of cooler than what Superman does, because you can't much seem to gauge his power at all. Also Saiyans have flashier moves. Lots of colourful bullets on the screen. Kind of like Touhou! If you're going to have super-powered battles, might as well make it flashy and have lots of transformations and things. Also, as a fan of RPGs, I think a lot in terms of levels. With Dragon Ball Z I was always thinking like "level 2 Goku, level 99 Goku" and ect. But with Superman it seems impossible to gauge, he seems to have a different power level every day of the week.
"He learned how to teleport though an ancient martial arts technique" and "he has a very fixed and measurable amount of strength currently due to a very specific course of training and fighting paths" sits with me better than "lol he was born with X-Ray vision" and "Superman is just strong, I dunno how strong lol".
Did I mention they're also just cooler to me? They have like, better hair and changing hair and eye colours. Loads of crazy and awesome looking bullets and martial arts moves.
Both have their ups and downs, Saiyans are cooler at the price of being more macho. And I think if I were to choose which one I'd love more to see a female protagonist about, it'd be a Saiyan. Fasha is awesome. It's too bad how shortlived she was. She's also the only female Saiyan who has made an appearance, who is more canon than Pan. I love playing her in the games.
It's weird because he can write strong female characters. Maybe less so in DBZ because it's just about the Saiyans but in Dragon Ball Bulma and Chi-Chi are strong female characters (maybe not physically, although Chi-Chi is a pretty strong fighter but you get the idea). hmmm... I dislike the character superman, but most of the other kryptonians are pretty cool. Saiyans are cool, but like goku (and the others eventually)is one of the few few, that ever reached super saiyan level. And he had to die once (Radditz) and basically die again (Vegeta) to even get close to the threshold and then Freiza had to piss him off to the point that he was ready to die just so he could take out that asshole.
Based on the universes i'd choose saiyan because there are actually dragons and they grant wishes. Dragons. that grant wishes. And even if i was human i'd have the ability to be awesome (IE yamcha and krillin). What does the DC universe have on that level of awesome (okay well batman... but i don't get to be batman). I dunno maybe i'd do DC if i got to sleep with either batgirl, wondergirl, supergirl/powergirl.

Well I assume that both species are spirals so it's sort of inconsequential... I think I'd go with Kryptonian simply because Kryptonite doesn't exist and there would be far less collateral damage.
I'd have to go with Saiyan, they may be slightly less versatile than Kryptonians, and require more training to achieve godlike powers, but they are just far more epic. And they have a tail. Oh, and the hair, can't forget the badass hair.

Saiyan for the tails and the pun, will no one think of the pun. I hate it when people use the argument as a Saiyan it would take me 4 episodes do to anything hurp durp, no half the time when something like this happens its because the animators have taken an instant attack or power-up and stretched and padded it beyond all belief

However, they lack the passion for battle and strength that pure saiyans have, so they lack motivation to achieve this level of strength.
