They both have their pro's and con's, but are so different that I can't really say which is better compared to eachother. I have both a desktop and a laptop, both of which I love for different reasons.

Surf-n-squat is the best thing since sliced bread in computer terms. And also laptops offer privacy, like being able to get up and move to a soundproof-windowless room

It depends of your preference, hey I would never scrap my laptop despite the hundred of times I could smash it with a baseball bat of compressed hatred and frustration because I've spent ages getting stuff for it software, hardware etc...But at for a high spec laptop you have to pay considerably more than you would for the same spec desktop. So I prefer desktop as I am a gamer and want to be able to get the best gaming equipment without emptying my bank account for it. But as an A-level student or at least soon to be having a Computer I can move around is very useful.
So as I said it depends what you want out of your hub of technological power, if you're a gamer who likes spend endless days at a screen glued to the keys like you have serious cramp then go for a desktop. But if you are a mobile businessman you might find a laptop more useful.

Well, desktops for gaming and price. To get a good laptop for gaming (which I have) it cost me $2300 AUD, and to build a desktop that did the same job it cost me $1200 all up including 22" widescreen monitor. A laptop has one thing that's better than a desktop, a small size and portability. So, all round, I prefer my desktop.

Desktop+netbook is serving me well. Nothing makes papers bearable like being able to sit outside for 5-hour stretches to type :D

I own an Alienware laptop... and it's fantastic (though massive).

But it's not as fun to use for gaming.

Gotta go Desktop when it comes to gaming.... especially since you can't cram the best hardware into a laptop anyway.
