Hello everyone, this is my 1000th post, so I decided to do something a bit special. Over the (almost) year I've been here, I've honestly seen the community get worse with every day. Now we have even more kids who were brought here through ZP, more people who don't care about the quality of the forums and make about ten threads a day, each with one sentence in the OP, and generally just more hate. So I thought I would do my part to help people improve the forums here. And while I know that 95% of the people who see this will go "Psh, yeah right, nobody's gonna improve themselves because of you" and move on, influencing that little 5% is still progress. So I'll give a few easy things you can do to keep the forums friendly and intelligent, unlike most of the rest of the internet.

TL;DR at the bottom.

So let's get started-
1. Check your grammar and spelling.

This is such an easy thing to do. If you have time to post a reply to a thread, you have time to quickly look through it once and make sure there are no mistakes. Also, there's a handy Shift key on BOTH sides of a standard keyboard, so I'm sure you can sacrifice the .02 seconds and almost non-existent amount of effort it takes to capitalize proper nouns and the first words of sentences. Also, if you want to get more complicated-

-Watch your homophones. This [http://learnyourdamnhomophones.com/] is a great place to study up on them. Such as, "its" is possessive, as in "Its head is green", and "it's" is a contraction of "it is".
-Watch your "could have"s and "would have"s, many people say "could of" or "would of" because that's how it's pronounced.
-Use commas in long sentences, and please end sentences with periods. I would like to show you one of the least coherent sentences I've ever seen, actually from a recent thread on this site. Some of you may know which thread and possibly the poster-
as for my personality i am as funny as a baby falling off a cliff making my name resemble that was because i found this randomly through a wrong video diary doing that as only to fit in thinking everyone did that seeing the error of my ways wish i hadn't
Don't be like that guy. You don't want people to think of you like that guy.

2. Don't be a douche.

I know this goes against human nature, especially with the anonymity over the internet, but just try to be nice to people. Over the last couple of months I've seen way too many hate threads, and a whole lot of people getting suspended or put on probation for acting like a dick. I'd like to take the old saying "If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything" and edit it to fit these forums.

If you don't have something nice to say, move on or say it without being an ass.

Ass, dick, douche, prick, whatever it is, you should avoid being one. And it helps you avoid being modded, too.

3. Develop your thread ideas.

I have another actual example for this. There's one user on these forums who has made at least fifteen different threads since Thursday, and each one has had no more than two sentences in th OP, usually just asking a question for discussion. Every now and then there'll be a personal example, but it's never more than filler. If you are going to create a thread, I suggest that your post be no shorter than four sentences, and actually have a point to it. You don't necessarily need an obvious "THIS IS FOR DISCUSSION" sentence like many members will tell newer ones, but only if there's already discussion value in the topic. For example, the thread that I'm making doesn't have any implied discussion value, so I am going to put one of those sentences at the end. If you make a thread about the scariest moment you've had in a game, you don't need to directly ask everyone what their scariest moment is. It's like if you were having a conversation with someone. Let's say you say "I went for a walk in the park yesterday." The person you're talking to will probably reply with a personal experience involving a park, without you having to ask them "What are your experiences like with the park?" But I digress. Before you hit that little Post button to share your thread, make sure your ideas are clear and developed.

4. Read the rules.

They can be found right here. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/codeofconduct] In fact, most of what I've said here is covered in the rules, but I'm sure almost none of you have actually read them. So if you had the time to read through my thread to this point, go look at them real quick. They're extremely short.

5. Take a chillaxative.

Nothing good comes from flaming someone. You may have seen the somewhat popular internet saying, "Arguing over the internet is like running in the Special Olympics. Even if you win, you're still retarded!" (IMPORTANT NOTICE: This is a direct quote, I have nothing against the mentally impaired) If someone has an opinion that conflicts with yours, remember that that's exactly what it is: an opinion. Everyone has them. They're more popular than cars or masturbation. There's a very high chance that someone else's is different than yours, so deal with it and move along with you life. This goes WAY back to some of the first reasons for war. A lot of them were and still are started because people think "my god is better than yours." The someone else says "no, mine is better" and they promptly have a dick waving competition where countless innocent people are slaughtered. If you flame someone who believes something different than you, you are no better than those people (except for the innocent people dying, at least most of the time).

Whew. Done.

So there are five easy ways to improve the Escapist community, and even if only one person improves themself in one of these ways, I've still made a difference. I have a few more that I'll give you if you want to follow them-

-Use breaks in wall o' text posts. Just hit the Enter key between major ideas.
-On a related note, if you're writing a user review, format it a bit and add some pictures. This makes it a lot less daunting and more interesting for readers.
-New users, when you add a poll to your thread, it automatically puts "Poll:" in the title. You don't have to put it yourself, otherwise you end up with another "Poll: Poll:"
-Make sure your threads are in the right section. This mostly applies to the new users. And if you're not sure which section to put it in, just choose any of the most applicable and it can be moved if you chose wrong. (My strategy is to put it in the section that gets the most traffic)
-Actually, make sure your threads are relevant and should even be posted at all. The thread that the quote I posted earlier came from was completely pointless and added nothing to the community.
-Please, don't make an "Am I the only one" or "Why the hate" thread. PROTIP: You're not the only one, and your thread will only inspire flamewars.
-USE THE SEARCH BAR. This also mostly applies to new users. Before you make a thread, search the forums to see if it's been done already. If you have something ground-breaking that you just have to add to the discussion, put it in the older thread instead of making your own. Otherwise, just move on, the forum gods have not smiled upon you this day.

TL;DR Check your threads and posts, and don't act like a douche.

So how do you think people can improve the forums, or how do you do so yourself?

You have my full support, however, I am rather uncertain about my ability to improve my grammar. Regardless, I will try.

How about we cut down on the polls? I find it silly to believe thread makers want to sum up peoples opinons in 8 choices. Plus people voting and not replying is kind of pointless. And if I see one more stupid poll answer ("Yes" "No" "I like bananas") hdfdsfjhf

But yeah.

Good post =)

Nice idea.
I also would like to add that people should at least make an effort to search for threads.
If it is one obscure thread that you can't find, by all means, make the thread, but I just don't like seeing the same influx of threads every 4-5 days.

I find #2 increasingly annoying. I hate sugar-coating stuff for the sake of not getting reported. Granted, I always say my part and let most of that bullshit go by the way-side anyways unless initiated, but its still stupid.

The way I help out these forums? I'm doubtful I have any sort of impact, however, I do try my best to just respond to posts in which my opinion hasn't been voiced yet, or to actually engage in meaningful conversation. I also post to lighten the mood in some topics where sarcasm is incredibly high but nobody seems to be understanding it...

All good ideas.. though I'd be remiss in not saying that topics like this are done fairly frequently (particularly in regards to spelling and grammar). This doesn't exactly mix well with the pointed suggestion to "USE THE SEARCH BAR."

Though I'm not a long time Escapist, I will endeavour to better myself for the good of the community.

Also, congratulations on the 1000th post.

1. In advanced English, and not like the retards in the class that are just there because they want their report card to look shiny. I actually have a good grasp of the damn language.
2. Always silent, always watching.
3. I DO.
4. Done. Or rather, did, but kinda hard to really know what is and isn't good to do right now since there is no definite right or wrong, merely subjective. So yeah, it's either risk a tap from the banhammer or post damn near nothing.
5. See number 2.
And not like anyone will care about this little "obligation" set. The people that will agree to it already do it, or fucking well close to it. The others won't give half an ass about it and just click away since there's more than a paragraph in content. OH WAIT YES THEY WILL
Because the tl;dr shit lets them understand the gist of what you're saying. Which gives me an idea just to prove a point about how god damned lazy people here are getting. I'm going to say the single most outlandish thing ever at the end of my post and see how many bloody idiots respond with a serious reply to it just because they're so used to people summing up their own ideas into a single sentence. Yes, because that's EXACTLY what needs to be done here. Let the good thoughts get shoved and crammed into a brief statement, rendering all that effort for the bulk of the post moot.

tl;dr: I cut my wrists and jab pencils into the cuts. Just because I think it's sexy.

I personally think if someone is being a moron, I have the right to treat them like there being a moron. Being totally brutal to people who just don't get something is the perfect way to make a forum better. Maybe not your definition of better but there is a difference between someone who has a different opinion then you, and someone who needs to be told that they are wrong.

I try so hard to check my grammar in my posts, especially becuse I RP here. I mean in that last sentance I had two mistakes, lol. I also agree with most of the points you put out there. I endevour every day to those things you listed. Good luck with this, even though many of the users here wont read it.

Want to make it better? Get rid of the mods that are power hungry, get rid of that "Captha" crap, get rid of the grammar nazis.

More to come later on.

To be honest, my one and only rule to improve this place would be 'don't pull debate's teeth'.

If you look in any thread where people talk about minority interests or opinions (see that recent furry thread) the sheer amount of sugary platitude on every post is absolutely fucking sickening! For God's sake, someone threw their viewpoint out there for questioning, go nuts! If they were that precious about it they'd have never done that.

It reminds me of that episode of South Park where Michael Jackson's ghost possesses Ike and just calls everyone and everything ignorant. I hate that people are so scared of looking prejudiced that they'll preach their insincere respect and admiration for that group and end up killing debate flat.
Yeah, I haven't ventured into those threads since I really don't care for that populace, nor do I understand the whole "furry" scene...nor do I want to. It's nothing against them though, just don't care for that stuff.

I suppose a certain tact has to be used though, however, there is an EXTREME that I've seen on this site for the past year due to the fear of "moderation". A lot of people clam up/don't say anything at all in their posts due to this. A lot of them just run around in circles in their posts because they don't want to offend anyone and its a real shame.

I haven't had a good debate on here since Cheeze_Pavillion...and I hated that guy. Biggest troll in disguise ever, but at least it was amusing to speak with him.

I don't have to deal with the Captcha or whatever it is stuff since I'm a paying member of the community, so I can't really comment on that. However, the other two...I haven't seen any "power hungry mods" (which I assume you mean "hard-asses"). They're simply just providing the services to this community they've been told to do. I do disagree with probations or warnings for low content posts (most of the time), but whatever, thats their business and this is their site.

As for the grammar nazis...I rather have them than a bunch of people who can't type coherent sentences because everyone is too dim-witted to actually sit there and say "Hey, go re-write that, because it looks like a piece of shit."

Edit: Double post, sorry.

Lol, oh noes, teh community is getting worse and worse everyday!

Actually, no it isn't. The only thing that's happened here is you've finally noticed that the community is nowhere near as great as you once thought it was. There hasn't been a marked decrease in the quality of the community, it's always been around this level. For every intelligent person on the site there are at least 5 muppets who contribute to the stupidity.

-Actually, make sure your threads are relevant and should even be posted at all. The thread that the quote I posted earlier came from was completely pointless and added nothing to the community.
We have an off-topic forum and an advice forum. Their very existence invalidates any arguments about a thread adding nothing to a gaming site.

-USE THE SEARCH BAR. This also mostly applies to new users. Before you make a thread, search the forums to see if it's been done already. If you have something ground-breaking that you just have to add to the discussion, put it in the older thread instead of making your own. Pro tip - if the thread is more than a few months old, START A NEW GODDAMNED THREAD. Necromancy is far more annoying than all the repeat threads in the world. Do you have any idea how irritating it is to be quoted over something you said 6 or more months ago?

This is just a failure of the community to recognize a hyperbole. If you've never said or thought that you feel like you're the only one who (insert the rest here) then you're the exception. You most likely don't really think that you're literally the only one, but it feels like it. People just turn into a mindless venom-spitting hate baboons when people say "Am I the only one?" and that's their fault, not the person asking the question.

I disagree immensely with this.

If everyone was always playing the nice game on here, this place would be boring as hell. Its good to see some down-to-earth common sense/someone actually speaking their mind on here every once in a while.

I agree with you Dusty. Very true. I've seen a lot of those threads get blown the fuck up because people don't have any sense.
