This is the reason why I consider Halo to be the best FPS in terms of gameplay, you just move and shoot. But for every other game you have to bring up your fucking gun and slow down to nearly a standstill just to shoot, you can't fire from the hip and run at the same time.
You know except for

Wolfenstein
Doom
Doom 2
Duke Nukem 3D
Heretic
Hexxen
Trials of the Abyss
Rise of the Triad
Quake 1
Quake 2
Quake 3
Quake 4
Unreal
Unreal tournament
Unreal 2
Unreal Tournament 2003
Unreal Tournament 2004
Unreal Tournament 3
Half-Life
Half-Life 2
Team Fortress
Team Fortress 2
Counterstrike

to name but a few, I'd agree with you.

I knew someone was gonna bring those up, yeah I knew about those as well, you got my point though, I don't understand why so many FPSs are going the shitty movement path.

Resident Evil 5 was just mediocre to begin with. The previous game in the series was MUCH better.
The one where you had to drag around a useless sac of meat with awhiney ass voice? No thank you.....[sub]Seriously, she could've at least stepped away from the chainsaws....[/sub]
But at least you didn't have an annoying gun-toting sidekick that was completely unnecessary. And also, you could fire while moving. 'Nuff said.
Sure, you could move slowly but seriously, at least my partner pprotected my back when I was standing still. I give her the BFG, I take the sniper, and we're set. But in RE4 little miss "can't run away from zombies without being force fed common sense every five seconds" almost made me stop playing. You know what? I think escort missions are the ultimate form of limiting user control.

Oh, come on. Those were baiscally all rip-offs of Halo. Even the ones made before it were designed with the idea in mind of Halo and the awesomeness of being able to move and shoot at the same time.

Well it makes sense in terms of more tactical FPS games (say, battlefield?). Since in real life it's pretty hard to aim when you're sprinting from cover to cover as guns tend to bounce up and down while you run. I know it's sort of foolish to talk about realism in a game, but the idea they're going for is that when you're running it's harder to aim. Did they really nail the mechanic? Probably not, but it's not BAD at representing that IMO.

Not having the ability to run and shoot goes all the way back to Resident Evil 1 in 1997 and I think resulted from a combination of technical limitations and the need to make taking on slow moving, shuffling zombies more difficult. I'm a huge Resi fan and I used to enjoy this game mechanic as i found it added a nice challenge and it made me think more tactically about engaging enemies and bosses. I thought it worked fantastically well in Resi 4 as it really contributed a lot to the overall frantic nature of the combat.

However Resi 5 is just a total mess. They managed to take everything that made 4 awesome totally bland and sucky. It was the first time in the series that the stationary shooting thing pissed me off and I think it's just because the game I so, how can i put it... bleh. Everything about the game is just really really bleh and everything about it pissed me off. Especially the total lack of atmosphere. And don't even get me started on that god awful game ruining lame ass walking disaster of a sidekick. Worst. Idea. Ever.

Too Human.

The SHOCKING CONTROLS were... well... shocking. The right stick was used to control combat, this left the problem of no real camera control.

Then that utterly stupid, idiotic, cretinous, moronic, retarded, dumb, asinnine, death scene which couldn't be skipped. You would be hammering down on the A button to try to get it to hurry up but it WOULDN'T MOVE.

The whole game was an excersise in developer hubris and how to wreck a decent concept with stupid decisions.

Point: You can't fire while moving. Seriously. You can't. You wouldn't hit a rhinocerous with a PPSH-4-41 from five yards firing while moving.

Well, you certainly wouldn't kill it. Which is more than I can say for the rhinocerous.

RE5 was meant to be a different type of game, not where you're able to just run and gun mowing down hordes of people. It's supposed to give you a handicap of sorts to add some tension, and make you rely on your partner more.

I guess its part of the realism factor. Have you ever tried running and shooting?

RE5 continues an ignoble tradition of some of the worst game controls in the entire history of gaming. They count on the "ooh, spooky" factor to keep shoveling out crap and because it sells, they've no reason to try harder.

I'd say using RE as a greater example of gaming should only be done in the "just because Capcom gets away with that crap doesn't mean anyone else should attempt it."

I like RSV2 because it has a good balance between moving and shooting and using cover. You can rush with smgs and shotguns, but with lmgs, assault rifles and snipers you need to slow down.
