depends: only if the person working there is an asshole first, because in that case, they don't deserve better

the worker should never be an asshole, no matter what.

please stop whining about unfriendly customers.
yes, some people are assholes and believe the world only revolves around them (some of them even are not on the paying but the paid side of the business, can you imagine that??), and if stuff isn't going their way, they'll blame you for it - but not because it's YOU who has the one and only intention of effing around with 'em, no sir, but because THEY are being the asshole, and chose you as their victim.
so just be professional, and don't take it personal, because it ain't about you, but merely your position (wrong time, wrong place), and THEM being a-holes.

I worked in retail for about 6 years, if a customer had a problem and were nice about it I would go out of my way to help them, even if they were a little angry, that's just to be expected, trying to get help can be frustrating sometimes.
If however they acted like an asshole then I would pretend to be really really incompetent dithering around all smiles and apologies wasting as much of their time as I can without helping them one bit intll they are forced to give give up and storm away red in the face and boiling with impotent rage.
I had a few try to get violent with me but I'm a well trained fighter and I like a good scrap most of the people who have threatened me have backed of pretty quick after realising I'm not the least bit intimated by them.
