Both are extremely important, as much as each other. However, if I have to choose, then I'd say music. Sorry, Drew Barrymore... :(
I genuinely hate this kinda stereotyping, so sorry about this, but....... O_O You are a guy, and you have heard of/seen that film?????

On topic, I'd say lyrics. Partly because I love singing, partly because I'm mildly awkward, and partly because I could never side with Hugh Grant.....
Yep, seen it, love it, have it on DVD. I have a weakness for romantic comedies, and I suppose I shouldn't admit that, being a guy and all...

Music, no question. Most of the music I listen to is instrumentals, and almost all of the rest is in a foreign language.

without music lyrics are nothing, but without lyrics music is still music.
Without music lyrics are poetry.
Without lyrics music is still music.

A failure in either department will ruin a song. If your talking about something like Jazz, then the lyrics are not the point (as somebody else mentioned earlyer), the music is what it is all about.

I am quite picky with my music. I like a song to have:
- good music
& Lyrics need:
- a message
- tell a story
- make me laugh

If it does not have at least two of these then I am not really interested. This is why I cant stand Pop/Rap/Hip Hop. For the most part they lack all of my desired ingrediants to a good song. There are always exceptions however so I tend to give things a go.

Additionaly, I hate remixing and sampling. It is, in my humble opinion, complete talantless crap.

Well, romantic comedies are awesome. Although I'm not sure we should derail yet another thread with a casual chat......

Oh, fine. Have it your way.

Okay then, back on topic, I have to say that further to my first post, it really does depend on the song, since some are better with music (like J-Pop, I have no idea what they're saying but I still love the music, and a lot of classical stuff. And so on...). Some are better with good lyrics though, for example, I yesterday bought Evanescence's album The Open Door, and although the music is great, the lyrics really clinched it for me. I found recently a set of songs on Youtube that I fell in love with listening to the lyrics, in fact I noticed they really fit the themes of Digs, mainly because of the style of lyrics. At the same time I'm a huge fan of songs that have absolutely no lyrics (such as Linkin Park's 'Wake'). As I say, it really depends on the song in question.

Personally, I think that music is definitely the most important part of a song - without it, there'd be no song. Lyrics can certainly add to the music, but I think of them as secondary to the music, not the other way around.
This. If your lyrics are good but your music is terrible, drop the band and become a poet. If your music is good but your lyrics are terrible, it's still possible to listen to and enjoy it- just sing unintelligably.

I'm not too bothered about the lyrics, as long as they aren't so bad they make me cringe.

Music. I can enjoy a song with stupid lyrics or lyrics that make no sense (see At The Drive-In) but I can't enjoy a song with no music.

Without music; lyrics are just poetry and we all know poetry is just for self-indulgent middle class high school drama club kids who wear all black (Facetious)

I listen to rap and jazz so i can see both sides of the arguement really. Good music gives a song longevity in that listening to it repeatedly doesn't get boring, and you can't really dance to lyrics which is a fundamental part of the purpose of music, but good lyrics are what change a song from good to great. Songs have the potential to tell stories that can amuse or depress and in this sense i believe they have more of an impact than music.

Its like RZA said, "I don't write rhymes, I write novels." Good lyrics can be a story, great ones can be an epic.

Lyrics are often the deciding point as to wether I like a song or not. I can name a few occaisons when I thought; "this band is great!" and then the singer started singing. Althoughthat could be because of the singer's voice as much as lyrics. So music is important to me as well, but I'm willing to forgive a bad tune if the lyrics are good, but vice versa; not so much.

I consider the human vocal chords as another instrument. Like the guitars, drums, or whatever, a singer's voice is as vital to most of what I consider music as any other instrument. Depending on how the song is written, the singer can set the tone for songs as much as instrumental intros can.

tl;dr - Lyrics are Music.

i see lyrics as another instryment, the words dont nesicarily need to mean anything, they can just act as anothe rintegral part, i need music in my songs or it becomes boring.

Actually, I personally do not object to derailing of threads. But I feel that I should warn you of 1, Max may kill us if we derail a thread without him (although he's been really quiet recently, he may not notice), and B, some of the other users may get annoyed by it, which may result in mod-wrath. Now you have been warned, it's up to you. To derail or not, that is the question....
